Makeshift units made of farmers were using resmithed scythes, most notably Kościuszko's insurgents in Poland. But actual scythe is pretty much useless as weapon, but nobody ever used a scythe in their life and don't know how it works.

They were a climbing tool more than anything, if I remember right. Remember that pretty much every building in Japan was made of wood, and not particularly hard wood at that.

90% of weapons you see in video games, even the "realistic ones", had no place on a proper battlefield. That doesn't mean they weren't used as weapons a shit ton throughout history, often more then conventionally "good" weapons like spears or bows.
Farmers defending their property/community used scythes a lot. Peasant weaponry consisted of literally anything lying around that had a sharp part, and if your opponent isn't heavily armored it's plenty effective.

I used to be a scythe fan, but when I got midway through my teens that it's hideously impractical as a weapon, I dropped it.
Nowadays my attitude has changed again - instead of shunning it, I just wish it was easier to use.
Note I'm now very much a halberd man.
