I thought Crisis Core was the best thing to come out of the Compilation. It made Zack an actual character with a background, motives and an arc that intertwined with the Turks, Sephiroth and Aerith in a believable way without retconning much.

We still haven't seen how Square is going to handle Zack in the remake, and as far as I know they've never outright stated that events from CC override those from the original. It could go something similar to how Capcom treated the Umbrella Chronicles/Darkside Chronicles games, where new scenes/material added to events from the old games were considered canon, but reinterpretations of existing scenes didn't supersede the originals. I'm expecting we might see some Angeal, but I imagine if they put in the scene with Zack getting killed, it's going to be closer to the original or much much more grounded than it was in Crisis Core considering the kind of tone they're going for with the remake.

It'll probably be something like the two of them running from a detachment of troops tired out and Cloud hiding while Zack takes out a bunch of them before he gets blindsided by some of them and then Cloud gets to hear his last words as he's bleeding out like in CC.

CC puts Zack over when the point was that Cloud was always better than Zack. Showing his accolates was one thing, blowing his shit out of proportion ruined the entire perception of the character. Cloud was the Naruto archetype: unjustly labeled a loser, he isn't even a chunin and he fights at a Hokage level. That's why letting a slap-happy director handle the compilation was a mistake, he pulled an Anakin on Zack when that wasn't even remotely what was the original game going for.

Well, gameplay wise, the dude who directed combat for KH1, KH2 and Dissidia PSP has returned from his slumber and is in charge of the combat here. Furthermore, unless I read wrong, Square has pulled/contracted a lot of Cyberconnect devs to help with the grunt work. Say what you want about their design, but pumping out those Naruto and .hack games shows they know how to hold things together. This was pretty much confirmed ever since the first reveal trailer, it showed Midgar during/post AC with "South Edge", with kids playing with buster swords and the narrator implying that the events of ff7 have transpired and there is a Reunion at hand (the remake? a sequel?) CC lore is almost certainly in. Cloud would probably "recall" of "his" fight with Genesis. But would somehow forget or leave out how he got the buster sword saying someone important gave it to him before the headache stops him. DoC will probably be told when we meet lucrecia or when we're exploring Vincent's story. Some parts of CC would also be hinted at Yuffie's story. I honestly Genesis himself isn't that troublesome, it's just chasing and fighting "him" several times is just a fucking drag in CC. And when did Zack actually beats him? I kinda forget the sequence when Zack fought him in that cave. It is after he fought Sephiroth IIRC.
