I don't get what prevents you from archiving digitally downloaded games aside from online-only stuff. If it's the DRM, then it was present on discs as well.

This problem is solved with backups. You can get a 1:1 image on your HDD with clone software and copy it on however many drives you want. In case of protected games you can't sometimes burn the disc 1:1, for example if the protection relies on purposely made bad sectors.
