Essentially, what happened is the companies started to pull in large profits and then something would happen that would risk their ability to keep those massive profits. Because they are a rich company, they can take their money to rich government officials willing to agree with them (because it would make them BOTH more money) and thus the government enacts rules and regulations that benefit the big guys because those big guys helped put them where they are or otherwise just help line their pockets.

Government intervention is the reason monopolies exist but it's because it was intervention driven by a government that is in the pockets of those monopolies. Government intervention is only bad when the intervening government is corrupt and only acting out of self interest of those that run it.

Protection of intellectual properties is certainly a good thing but the issue is that monopolies have the money to strong arm everything to rule in their favor. Even if you DO manage to come up with your own competitive yet distinct IP, they have the money to get away with suing you for theft or stealing it themselves and beating you to production and you can't do shit because they have more resources and important people in their corner than you.
