I have Yokai Watch, never opened it though. should I play?

Guys I loved Pokémon but now hate it- I tried SMT and Digimon but couldn't really stand the mechanics of having your monsters die or devolve etc.
Which Digimon/SMT game is most similar to Pokémon in terms of just collecting a team of permanent party members to battle for you?
The only one I enjoyed so far was Digimon Dusk and Dawn so more like that would be good

Cyber Sleuth is basically a Pokémon game that got smashed together with SMT. Definitely one of my favorite monster collecting JRPGs out there.

Hearing how 4 is going to be on a Splatoon-style GaaS schedule gives me a little hope that there's not AS much to localize and thus we can get it faster... but I'm being stupidly optimistic.

World 3 if you want more turn-based but this time it's 1v1 with switch-outs and in-battle evolution only. Get the 2003 version if you can, it has post-game content. I think it's the European version? Also check out the DS games, maybe you'll like them, but don't go in expecting anything amazing.
Or if you want more like World 1 play Re:Digitize Decode and Next Order.

Yes and that new one was supposed to be out like a year and a half ago and still has no release date, it's based on Ares and the anime is already more than halfway through Orion, the sequel to Ares.

must suck being a pokemon-only autist and having nothing to look forward to in your own game, so you have to get hyped for another game to sell poorly.

Pokemon is a souless corporate product that just does the exact same thing every two years with minimal progress and change. Its why its successful, they don't piss off older fans, keep things simple and deliver the same thing that worked before.
It is a well managed assembly line product, but it never had that spark of somebody actually doing something really creative with it.

Digimon is a fucking mismanaged mess of a franchise that went through so many creative hands, no plan at all and they just let people do whatever they wanted.
This also meant that the whole franchise has a fuckton of misses, but also some accidental highs when it ended up in the hands of somebody who actually wanted to make something out of it.
Also means that the massive amount of varying quality and changing concepts gave people a lot off reasons and points to jump ship.
The anime especially managed to be great with Tamers as the absolute high point, the games often tried to reach at greatness and had potential at times.

No idea about Yokai watch, since I didn't watch it. But I don't see it standing a chance to Pokemon. Pokemon has 20 years of successful franchise-building behind it now.

They tried going way too hard into it and tried the two-games Pokemon thing, and didn't properly space out the games, which led to burnout. It doesn't help that Inaho essentially killed the anime for a time.

Jian's father betrays the kids, makes everything turn back to normal and reestablishing the barrier between the real and digital world, forcing the kids' partners out and separating for an unknown amount of time rather suddenly. They promise to meet again.

The audio drama takes place a year or so later, and it is pretty depressing, the kids send out the digital equivalent of 'message in a bottle' to their partners, saying how they feel. Its clear that the main kids haven't moved on and Ruki's especially is downright soul-crushing when she breaks down.

Konaka also made a second audio drama very recently to pitch Tamers 2 to Toei, but they said they're too busy.

Cyber Sleuth and Hackers Memory are already 100% better then any pokemon game gen 6 and onward. I'd even argue they're better then EVERY pokemon game. As much as I like digimon these have been around too long performing middling at best. Momentum and trajectory are a thing it will take something new, hot, and fast to do that.

The environments took a hit because they needed to reserve graphics for everything else (Namely, 251 pokemon textures, 502 in total if you count back sprites). They were also building off of the older titles, which for THEIR time looked good.
