Spanish baroque is completely different from "proper" italian baroque because the architectural and artistic trends arrived late and distorted to Spain compared to the rest of europe. This was due to spain having a difficult political situation with the reconsquista that absorbed also moorish influences which caused spain to have some sort of "delay" at absorbing european influences. It's clear to me that this game takes place in its own fictional reality. The 'church' is not necessarily parallel to our own, and the presence of a 'corrupted church' theme does not necessarily make the game a work of propaganda if the intent isn't there.

Not really. A big point of metroidvanias is backtracking to areas you have already visited to use the newly obtained powers to access some goodies or rooms that were previously blocked.
In Souls game you never have to revisit areas for this purpose, outside of some huge plot points like lordvessel.

If any game perfected the genre, it was SotN and not Hollow Knight. Hollow Knight was fucking boring by comparison. Yeah, SotN's RPG system made it a little bit too easy by the end if you take the time to power up your character too much, but at least it had an RPG system at all, and made you feel excited for finding new items and increasing your character's strength. By comparison, from the couple of hours I played Hollow Knight before quitting, it was nothing but walking around aimlessly to fill up my map while whacking the dull enemies over and over with the one melee attack. I had already finished Dark Souls and didn't have the stomach for another extremely vague (probably nonexistent) plot to piece together, either.
