From what I understood Cloud never had time to grief over Aerith so they wanted to use this plot to address that issue. The game tries to sell you that he cared about Aerith so much in the original game but he gets over it rather fast using Sephiroth as excuses

My point is that they're still limiting themselves by doing a remake instead of doing a sequel. They've put so much effort into making this a completely different beast, but ultimately, it's still going to have to hit all the major beats of the original. So why waste the time and effort to completely upend the original game, and retcon it to be compliant with the rest of the Compilation, instead of just making a sequel that can try to surpass the original?

That's the thing though, sans Gackt allusion Genesis would be just as one note as Angeal. I can't see them wasting time with his stuff if it won't pay off anymore than Sephiroth who already sells on his own merit.

It's more likely they'll just allude to events of CC happening in some form without showing us any particular people of significance.
That way they can retain the idea of Zack and Sephiroth's ordeal without dealing with the hassle.

I thought the whole point of the Tifa/Cloud romance was that it was tragic, unrequited love. Cloud loved Aerith and after her death, Tifa was there to pick up the pieces, but Cloud could never quite get over it and essentially friendzoned her. I mean year they fugged, but I always interpreted that as them relieving stress before the final battle.
