I've played Switch on a 4K TV and it is just ugly. I am happy with my 1080p TV. I just wish FONTS were bigger. I can hardly read shit when the font size is like point 9 and I'm a few metres away from my telly.

expecting consoles to jump to three or four times the effective performance by 2020 is completely unreasonable, at best we'd get a console that is capable of 4k@60hz but in reality not a single developer will be able to make it work because it would require optimising to hell and nobody does that

No Nintendo stopped caring about competing hardware wise after the GCN. They would need to go back to a standalone console because hitting even 4k/30FPS on a tablet with currently available Tegra hardware is impossible, the portable gimmick of the Switch has carved out a niche for Nintendo and it's working well for them so they have no reason to change it.

Ever since Game Boy, Nintendo learned that having your own niche of cheap devices for all ages is better than getting into an arms race with other companies for no good reason. All of their most successful consoles relied on availability and software instead of horsepower. As a result, Nintendo owns the portable gaming niche in its entirety because they managed to destroy the competition with inferior hardware every single time since the 90s. Also, they already own the Japanese market because Japan is obsessed with handhelds, and Nintendo is the only player there. They also have home gaming covered because Switch is a hybrid, and it works just fine.
It's a good time to be Nintendo, I must say.

fast forward to the switch release-- it's less powerful than the ps4 and xbone, but is on pace to possibly tie(or even surpass) the ps4 in sales.
next nintendo console will be 1080/60fps guaranteed and fans will praise them for it.

The fact the current gen could barely handle 1080p/30 in most games, needing a refresh console to do SOME shit in 1080p/60, should be telling that we will MAYBE get 1440p 60 for a good amount of games, but most will just revert to 30fps again. Console gamers just don't respect fps.
The "common consumer" also didn't care about 1080p for years because tv was 720p and DVD upscaling hit limits at 720p. The "common consumer" is just a made up bullshit excuse for poor people to keep everyone else behind.
