I don't think that is wholly accurate. Otherwise why would they bother fucking with other shards to begin with? My guess is they need two calamities at once. One on the source, and one on the shard they want to merge back into it.

It's not entirely explained, but my presumption is Ascians become more powerful the more dark aspected the reflections are, without turning them into an outright Void like the Thirteenth. But it is outright stated that calamities on the Source are followed by a rejoining.

Two calamities on a shard and the source weaken the borders between them. At this time the Ascians convert a shard to aether and merge it into the source's lifestream. This is known as the rejoining.

The process is incredibly damaging to Hydaelyn for some reason.

The reflection's aether is absorbed into the Source, the goal is supposedly to have all reflections rejoined and then rejoin Zodiark and Hydaelyn.

Rejoin one of the shards with the Source. The shards being a byproduct of Hydaelyn splitting herself off of Zodiark. With enough shards rejoined, Zodiark (currently the moon) will return to the Source.

Depends what you do along the way and how long you play each day, but level 35 shouldn't take even a week, really. Not sure if you have access to Palace of the Dead as a trial user, but you can level multiple jobs to keep it going and try things out.
You have at least 200 hours of story to reach the Shadowbringers expansion, as well as 8-man and 24-man raids and 8-man trials on the side, plus bonus dungeons.
There's a lot to do, but most of it won't keep you from progressing the plot.
