Sony pushed the PS3 as more than a game console, which mostly flopped except for the fact it was a bluray player. This combined with both the PS2 and Xbox Hueg shifting the demographic of their audience into teens/early 20s meant adults with jobs started to largely buy video games for themselves more regularly than a parent buying games for their kids. That and the original core audience was growing up.

Budgets were getting bigger, games were selling better, entire industries surrounding the games themselves (merchandise, conventions, media) sprung up because of this. And here we are.
