I think I like it better when they just kind of treat the peak like a flat surface, so he would be standing upright, and his feet would be flat on an invisible surface

Both of them are shit though. The only decent way to do it would be really involved, the foot automatically finds the tip of the shape and then rests it there, OR the character moves slightly back when they are at the edge.
Not sure how you'd implement it, and it probably wouldn't be worth / feel sluggish and floaty maybe?
