Don't forget anons, we're getting a new Dragon Quest Monsters game, starring a young Erik and Mia, and we'll even probably get it localized. Being a Dragon Quest fan feels fucking great right now.

When was this teased?

I wanna fuck Mia

Shame this probably won't make it to 3DS.

I will never not be salty about all the 3DS spin-offs we will never get.

Yeah, we got all the main games, but the Monster remakes, Slime 3, Joker 3, and Theatrythmn were fucking awesome.

Redpill me on DQM

Oh yeah I forgot.
Thanks for reminding me and making my day better.

Dragon Quest V feature that let you recruit monsters but expanded.

Yup...I agree. I grew up with Dragon Warrior Monsters too...but i'm looking at where the series is now, with Horii personally pushing for the series to come out in the West and Smash + excellent marketing for XI making it much more prominent, and just sighing with relief that we'll at least get this.

I really should go back and try replaying the original GB games, along with Joker. I strangely have a lot of nostalgia for the original two (three, if you could the DQM2 split) although I'm not sure if I'm being overly harsh at Joker for its tedious grinding. DQM had its grinding problems as well, along with a lack of meat, but I remember going into dungeons and trying to get meat to be an enjoyable experience.

I'm betting it will be more like Joker, though, complete with more on the grinding side. And the obscure-as-fuck breeding system.

>Redpill me on DQM
It's Pokemon with Dragon Quest enemies, functionally.

You run around. You get monsters. You use monsters to fight other monsters. You beat the others up and get them to join. How it worked depends a bit on which game you're playing. The older Game Boy titles had you throw meat to entice target enemies, and they'll just randomly join. The more recent DQM Joker games on the 3DS instead have the recruitment rate increase each time you fight the enemy, with them eventually joining.

Monsters level up and learn moves as they level. It's basically a Dragon Quest game in that regard. Later games have abilities for monsters to learn as well as moves.

And then, there is the combining/breeding. It's kind of similar to Pokemon, except that basically everything can mix with basically everything. It's very different, though, in that combined monsters disappear, and you just have the offspring left over. The offspring gets the moves of the parents, and can learn their own moves. The combining charts are also annoying as fuck to work through and figure out. There are some pretty basic combinations (slime type + beast type = Spot Slime, etc.) but there are tons of specific cases and if you are looking for a particular monster accessible through breeding, good luck without a full listing of how everything combines with everything.

Did Terry's Wonderland 3DS get a fan translation, or was that just Joker 3?

Attached: 1459236540146.jpg (500x606, 120K)

It's the only game I went full autist on keeping an actual journal of all the syntheses I performed to work my way up to having boss monsters on my team

It got one as well.

Omg yes, the Joker series was stale AF. What are even the chances we get this in the West tho? Higher I hope now.

Dragon Quest Pokemon made by people who arent lazy

Not the guy you replied to, but that sounds right up my alley. Which entry can I do this in?

>Go out at night
>Find a group of daytime monsters hudddled up sleeping
>Start encounter
>they are all sleep and will not wake up at all unless you attack them
Attention to detail like that is why I love it.

DQM2 is preddy comfy if you dont mind the gbc graphics otherwise just go for joker 1 or 2.
Feel like shit just want more official localizations of DQM

I feel like you can do this in most of them?
I got reallly into getting a bunch of Diamond Slimes in the 3DS remake of the original.

>750mb of dolphin porn
Thanks.

>have Joker 1
>have a team of Ace of Spades, Ruin, and another rank X monster I can't remember
>let youngest brother play
>hear arguing between little brothers 20 minutes later
>walk in to see what's up
>youngest deleted my save and started a new game

>bought dq11 on pc
>crashes on load save after 35 hours in
I'm fucking pissed, I still kind of want to get the switch version but it left a bad taste in my mouth

>Feel like shit just want more official localizations of DQM
I shouldn't have faith...but considering where we are now, I do. I think we'll get the new one, and if the 3DS entries ever get re-released we'll get them then too.

Is Toriyama able to draw different characters? I like the designs but I wonder if that's just my familiarity with it.

With humans? No.

With monsters/aliens? I think he knocks it out of the park.

focus your attention on all the monsters, they're good

Guess I'll be picking up Joker 1 and 2 in the future. Thanks.

I'd be happy if we got anything at this point. Really loved the series as a kid big shame it never really caught on outside Samurai land.

You'll enjoy creating mons if you do it blindly or go full autism with a spreadsheet/journal after looking up component mons. It's honestly fun stuff doing that especially when you get a team that absolutely mogs the enemy ai.

I want to check out DQ spinoffs. Which ones weren't released in America and which of those have fan translations?

Should I start with the ones for GBA or jump straight into Joker on the ds?

Builders is good, Heroes 2 is good, and Dragon Warrior Monsters 1 and 2 are good.

>forgetting based Rocket Slime

Attached: Akemi.png (960x720, 645K)

Shit, I need to play that one still

Shame we never got the sequel.

youtu.be/45XeoLj7g2A

Joker 2 and 3 are also good. I felt Joker 1 was a bit too grindy.

God I miss Dragon Quest Monsters. Played the absolute shit out of the first and second game. Even got Wildcard/JOKER and Leonyx in the second one. I am kind of sad that certain monsters are only obtainable once though, namely the Infantus and Captain Crow. The former just because he’s fucking cool, the latter because he’s eventually necessary in the fusion charts for both Dragonlord II, and Dr. Snapped, I believe the other one was.
Anyways I should probably play through DWM 2 since I have them, and just pray that we eventually get a DQM: J or DWM remake released globally.

i didn't like breeding in Joker so i didn't get very far in. i'm hyped for builders 2, not so much pokemon or it's competitors.

>one-time obtainable monsters are necessary for fusing to get specific monsters
>but there's no way to know which ones without looking at a chart
>no trading allowed
>game saves after fusing so experimenting is an easy way to get fucked
And it's not like you can just sit down in an afternoon and clear these games to just fuck around with fusing, either.

>Into Dragon Quest mainline games
>Enjoyed Rocket Slime
>Never touched Monsters/Joker
What is the best one to play?

the sequel is getting a fan translation.
the gba prequel has been supposedly getting translated for over a decade now.

Camus is my favorite character from DQ11 so that's nice, didn't know about it.

Terry's Wonderland and Joker 3 have fan translations at least.

Builders

Meant in the Monsters series. I already played some of Builders and while I liked it the chapter system really took my enjoyment away from me. So 2 being more open sounds perfect.

Anyone know how long Dragon Quest 2 is? Thinking about giving that one a whirl.

Yeah it’s pretty retarded, honestly. I’m not exactly sure why they made fusion so specific and unforgiving. Younger me actually sat down with a page of paper and sketched out a whole flowchart of just about every monster I’d need in order to fuse up Leonyx while referencing Dragon’s Den/Woodus. Walked around with my DS and that page everywhere afterwards trying to work on getting him lol. Beyond my reminiscing though, for anyone that ever did get a chance to play DQM: J3, since I believe it’s out by now in Japan, did things ever get better in terms of fusion?

I honestly expected Eleven or Greg to be the damage dealers, but Camus left them in his fucking dust. How did they manage to justify giving him more damage than multiple party members combined?

Yeah, but he really only shows his true potential in DQX. Watch this youtube.com/watch?v=SaJkao9ZLBM There is a bunch of really good and pretty unique character designs there. Shame we'll never get it.

Strategy guide or no?

With knowing where you need to go to accomplish stuff, it's probably 20 hours or less and that's including dealing with the bullshit in Rhone. If you don't know, then who knows how long it can take you. The biggest problem with DQ2 is that it really doesn't guide you or hint to you where to get the necessary-to-complete-game stuff, so you are left with wandering around endlessly and doing absolutely everything in an attempt to find what you need.

10 hours give or take, NES rpgs weren't known for huge content.

Wait WHAT? NO FUCKING WAY, THAT'S KICKASS

A new dqm would fill the void left by pokemon

Will it be using DQXI assets?

I completed it in 8 hours with a walkthrough. I don't recommend it tho, it's absolute shit. The only DQ game I genuinely find bad.

Only play it if you are planning on playing first 3 together. It's around 15-20 hours with a guide because of grinding. It's just not a fun game with how badly it's balanced but it is nice to see some of the small story bits it gives you show up later.

>tfw you face the final opponent in DQM
First time I was like "whoah". Then once I got used to the fight in later playthroughs my teams were already far beyond that so even vs a souped up team like that, nothing beats Gold Slime and boss monsters.

Probably.
Then again Joker 2 didn't use anything from 9 so who knows?

On the one hand, I can understand them wanting you to live with your choices. On the other hand, it completely fucks over a player who doesn't have the strategy guide and it's unreasonable to ask someone to just grind another 40+ hour game file because they screwed up one fusion somewhere. Hell, looking at the guides, I didn't even want to mess with any of the boss monsters because getting a Platinum King or the strongest dragon was far less prone to screwing yourself over.

I'm appreciating all the replies. I'm interested in playing it because I've beaten the other 2 Erdrick games, loved them a lot, and was feeling like if it was short enough it would be good to go ahead and knock it out. I don't mind a bit of exploration. Is the Gameboy version good?

>I don't mind a bit of exploration
Like 70% of the game is sailing around and backtracking. Gameboy version is fine, SNES version is probably better tho.

Nice. Sailing around was one of my favorite parts of 3, so I don't think i'll mind. Thank you.

>tfw want to play monsters joker 2 and 3, but don't want to play it, because it isn't the pro version, because I would rather not play a game than play it and knowing there is a straight up better version that is unavailable to me.

Attached: 1542333781434.gif (460x345, 473K)

The problem isn't really exploring but that the game world is big while only giving the most vaguest of directions. It's a game that tries to make you really work for the ending but in a way that feels like more wasting time than fun globe trotting like in 3.

DQ2 is this weird middle child where 1 is smaller so even small hints gives you enough information to have some idea what to do next. While 2 does that but in a world that's 5 times as big so most of the time you are just wondering around each area having 0 clue where to go next. DQ3 fixes that by not only giving you more clues but each orb has a small story attached to it which makes exploring more enjoyable.

You know, Mia looks like Kid from Chrono Cross in an alternate universe where Toriyama stuck around to do the character designs for that game.

Attached: 20180917202111_1.jpg (1920x1080, 409K)

Oh my god. I really want a new DQM game. But
>console
Aaaaaaaaaaaand I'm fucked. Hopefully they port it to PC too but who knows. I'm also still mad about not having DQMJ3 Proffesional translated. Even when I don't have a 3DS.

What does the Pro version have?

I see. Well I suppose If i'll get stuck I'll look it up. I appreciate the information greatly though and will absolutely keep it in mind.

im playing through it right now and just a warning if you ever hear an npc mention anything about a crest, write that shit down. tremendously important later, and i had forgotten a couple of the hints and had to go around and talk to many npcs to re-remember.

Thanks for the tip

>How did they manage to justify giving him more damage than multiple party members combined?
He has zero AoE spells or skills if you aren't using boomerangs. Erik fills the niche of being a boss killer, but for regular encounters you want characters like Rab or Veronica spamming spells.

I want to marry this old witch!

I hear you. For a fundamental aspect of the game, and for a game that’s generally as enjoyable as it is, it’s blasphemous to me how they flawed fusion in so many different ways. Especially when you consider that majority of the really cool, powerful, and even iconic monsters require very specific formulas to reach them. You don’t even get a hint about their ingredient monsters in regular gameplay, let alone the real endgame monsters you’re gunning for.

I don’t think anyone understands how badly the existence of DQM: J2 Pro haunts me to this day.

I haven’t even thought about playing DQ II yet and I’m happy for this tip. Speaking of, is the DQ I + II pack on GBC worth getting?

More monsters and story content

Also forgot to mention that joker 3 pro pulls a Red.

>tfw you will never play DQMJ 3 Pro in english

What is your story brother?

Attached: 1542909249530.jpg (512x432, 111K)

Is that an Alaskan Bull Worm?

Eh, nothing more than me be whiny. When I was younger, I got really into Dragon Quest when I just randomly picked DQ VI for the DS, and fell in love with the series instantly. Naturally when I eventually happened across “Pokemon, but Dragon Quest”, and I shat myself and got that, then shat myself a bit later, and a bit harder, when I found DQM: J2. So basically I enjoyed my collection of four DQ games for a long while, until I finally stumbled upon Dragon’s Den while online one night and found out just how massive a franchise these games were.
And eventually got really sad when I saw that there was basically a “Pokemon Emerald” to DQM: J2 that I would never be able to get my hands on, because it was Japan-exclusive, and realized there was a whole world of games I was, and continue to, miss out on.

Bump

DQMJ2 on the DS has more care and attention to detail on the monsters and how they interact with the player and the environment than Pokemon on the 3DS, it's embarrassing knowing which one is the leading franchise in the world.

bump

This is probably a stupid question but I have to ask because I never fucking know with JRPGs:
Is there any real benefit to allocating skill points to more than one type of weapon in DQ8?

Small benefit if you want to spec into spears just for thunder thrust and then put the rest into swords or courage, but generally picking one weapon and the trait is considered the best. Just look up which weapon is "the best" for each party member if don't want the pressure of thinking about it yourself, but just know that everything, but fisticuffs, boomerangs, and clubs are viable.

Fisticuffs on Yangus is alright

He's like the only one where it is viable, but axes and scythes are so much better.

I dunno, on my 3DS run I supplemented axes with fisticuffs and was surprised at how useful it could be.

CUNNING

Really? Fuck yeah man i was needing a monster collecting game now that pokemon is dead, time to move on.

>2019
>3DS
stop being a poorfag and buy a switch already ffs

>Terry's Wonderland 3DS
we all want user, we all want

I have one already. Rather lug around my 3DS.

Sometimes i hit fazes where i just become completely obsessed with a certain piece of fiction, it kinda hit me with DQ recently with smash and all, and i also been meaning to play all the games but i really just can't seem to put down the time to actually do it, i don't know why, but i have started a little of DQ3 and i've been enjoying it so far i like the music and the party system especially, being able to customize whether their male or female is cool and you can also change their personality which is also really neat for such a old game, i can see why the Japanese adore that game so much, but i think i'll arrive to a more accurate opinion once i finish it, I've also started DQM but i ask myself "Is this really a good idea? What if i get burned out on DQ and just don't wanna play the other games?" but i don't think something like that would happen to me, especially since i mentioned my obsessive faze. It honestly feels like i wanna play all the games at once, if am gonna be honest. But maybe i should just cram DQ3 and just work my way up.
It's for sure a me problem and am just gonna put my foot down and just play DQ3, i don't know why i don't do it right now and i already love the bit that i played. Maybe am just a lazy idiot even though my whole objective right now is just to play a damn game.

Attached: 1552168615986.png (759x953, 625K)

Phases of obsession like that is actually a sign of high functioning autism.

>everything but [...] boomerangs [...] are viable
Fuck you I'm using them anyway, hitting every enemy is worth it

This is why I never shared games and always took the memory card out of the ps2. All it took was that faggot deleting my wrath of cortex 100 percent file, and he never got to touch it again

I mean it can work since you have other party members, but boomerangs is definitely the hero's worst weapon for boss fights. I think even fisticuffs might do better.

user you're using the word a lot and I feel like I need to tell you it's spelled phase, not faze

What if he periodically goes through a sniper clan?

Well it's more like a sudden strike of hardcore interest.
Damn that's the word that i was looking for! I feel like an idiot....

Attached: 1560446033192.png (1302x973, 1.19M)

Yeah, that's what I mean. That's a sign of high functioning autism. I don't mean it insultingly, but yeah, that's a common sign.

Dammit why did it have to be me? Am supposed to be perfect!

I'm sorry.

Can you marry Mia in DQXI S? This is an important question

No

Didnt know that, but I'm really excited now. thanks OP
