To eschew these characters would be ridiculous, there would be riots. Especially Red XIII who had a significant story in the game.
You may not like certain characters, but I can't help but feel you didn't really enjoy this game much in the first place.

Red XIII brought all the Cosmo Canyon stuff and Bugenhagen. Cait Sith brought a little spotlight to the guy who was controlling him and is key to getting the black materia. Vincent brought his backstory which told us a bit more about the main villain. Yuffie is worthless, though.
