They're all like bad knock offs of Warcraft 3 models. The art style really is what makes them look shit, and the animations are pretty bad compared to the Warcraft 3 counter parts.
It really shows how much work Blizzard did for that game that probably wasn't necessary.
There are some decent looking heroes but they are the ones that didn't try to look like the old ones, but the most recent heroes don't really look great either.

Dota's heroes have names as well but warcraft 3 would display their unit type primarily, then generate a random (later fixed) name which people mostly ignored. You wouldnt call drow ranger Traxix, people would just say drow out of habit.

For some of the heroes people still use those old names, for example a lot of people call Lifestealer Naix, and Io is pretty much always called Wisp.

Yeah, they disabled model/texture replacements because some pro was using pumpkins for trees mod to make tree jukes easier. All mods in valve servers for every valve game got hosed because of that. Rip all my texture/model/anim improvements for tf2.

Blizzard didn't do anything to take away the character. Valve did it for "pressing ceremonial reasons", i,e they needed to appeal to chinks because them and the russians are the only ones who really play DOTA at all.

The lawsuit Blizzard had didn't stipulate changing any characters. Valve did so of their own accord.
