Its not unreasonable for somebody to think, "Hey, here's this adult that I put in charge of X, let me task him with doing a thing"

All the Principal needed were names, so they could then be dealt with. He expected Makoto to go along with it because she's Sae's younger sister. Once Madarame happened, the Principal knew shit was starting to hit the fan which was why he got progressively more flustered over everything. But by the time Madarame happened, Goro already knew who they all were and the Conspiracy started actively fucking with them with Goro's interviews and later Medjed. Shido just gave the Principal all the rope needed to hang himself, proving he was just a liability and needed to be dealt with.

The biggest problem with the principal, to me, is this: Why the fuck is someone like that even in Shido's circle? Shido's contacts are all based around how much use that person can be for him. A principal of a shitty, run-down public Tokyo high school is not a particularly valuable contact.

Shujin is a prep school for elite kids. Shido probably wanted a plant to cultivate the minds of the generation that would follow him.
