The high points are way better than the anime. Keiichi's internal narration is a huge part of the story and for example chapter 3 is butchered by not showing us his thoughts. The downside is that the pacing is terrible as every chapter opens with hours of pointless slice-of-life club activities. If you skip that then it has some genuinely brilliant literature.

Umineko does better in the horror department.
And all other departments actually.

I watched the anime back in high school. It tripped me the fuck out. 10/10

To give an example, one of the best and most memorable parts of chapter 3 (where Satoko gets abused) is a optional TIP which consists of nothing but child abuse crime statistics. If you played it then you immediately recognize the part. The anime completely removed it.

Does it do better in the anime adaptation department?

As someone who read the VN first and then tried to watch the anime I really don't get how people can like the anime. The animation itself is pretty shit and everything feels underwhelming. I barely feel any of the tension that made the VN question arcs so great and the overall atmosphere is just kind of boring. Maybe the answer arcs are better in the anime but I've watched rooftop scene from episode 6, which was an absolutely amazing scene in the VN, and it just felt boring and underwhelming.
People always say the Higurashi anime is supposed to be good unlike the Umineko one but I don't really see it, they seem just as bad to me

Episode 2 was fucking great with the Shion thing at the beginning, the anime in comparison rushes that whole thing so much I wonder why it's even there, you might as well have just cut that whole section because there's no impact when it's so rushed. Also the early parts of episode 3 do a great job at getting you to actually care about Satoko, which is really important for the rest of the episode.

If anyone ends up picking this up make sure to get the mod patcher to add voice acting, the option for the PS2 sprites, and original backgrounds and CG to replace the god awful Steam sprites.

Nigga the stream sprites are amazing. Umineko is the one with the terrible steam pachinko sprites, the ones for Higurashi are great.

Correct, the Higurashi anime is just as bad as the Umineko one. The difference is that at the time Higurashi was completely unknown and was hard to get into due to its slow pacing. The anime was faster by necessity and made the story more accessible, despite being kinda shit.

I remember watching this and really liking the whole timeloop stuff. Then it became some generic harem garbage where the little blue haired girl was sliding her ass on a window and everyone was messing about in bikinis and I pretended I never knew the series existed.
