you only need to apply the one of the patches (it's a pcsx2 cheat) to get past a crash that occurs in volk.
if you play the PAL version at 50hrtz you wont need to aply a cheat at all but on the otherhand you'll be playing at 50 fps. the USA 60fps version is better imo.
it says put audio 3 milliseconds if that sounds choppy you can try anywhere from 4-6 milliseconds.
Setting VU clamping to [Extra+Perserve Sign] is importat to have the shaders work properly.
For the best looking outlines set the PCSX2 Anti-aliasing to 8x in you graphics card settings. if you cant do that then you can just render the game at 5x resolution or something and downscaling will look almost as good.

The story is good, but there's nothing as shocking as Grandpa's death or the ending. The subtext of the entire story makes up for that, though.
