It's literally the Forzathon shop from Forza Horizon 4 and their seasonal challenges and content are literally just Forzathons. FH4 has no microtansactions aside from car pack DLCs, and they even removed the paid credits from FH3, which were completely uninvolved with the time locked content anyways. They're just copying Forza and padding the game with timed content to keep the online going.

Turns out some nice person on GBATemp made a cheat code that unlocks all of the Pit Stop items, but leaves all the normally unlockable items still locked, so you actually have a reason to play still! I don't really think they're aiming for the same market. Mario Kart is the game you play with your girlfriend or a room full of people with massive differences in skill. It's got recognizable characters, high variance, and a really low skill floor/ceiling that means casuals can have fun playing with their more competitive friends. This also makes for a pretty terrible experience playing the game online vs strangers.

CTR has a stellar campaign, a high skill ceiling, and is better if you care about perfecting your time on the tracks or competing online. It's only fun with friends if they are close to your skill level and is much worse as a party game.

More skill is required which is ultimately why online is based on skill level instead of the MK approach of having everyone play everyone. It wouldn't be fair for newcomers to face against veteran players because they'll always lose and vice versa.

Both are fun but for different reasons. With Mario Kart the fun comes from the unpredictable nature of the race. With CTR the fun comes from facing another player whose just as skilled as you are and having extremely close races against each other.
