He tells the interviewer, as a means of correcting the "suspicion" that Squall's human inspiration was based on himself, that, "no, it's based on this young Hollywood actor River Phoenix."
You seem upset I'm pointing this out? You can correlate aesthetic elements with a 45-year-old pop-star all you like. I'm just pointing out a provably documented case of the artist announcing an official source for design.
By the same token, Genesis is announced to be SO identical to his human inspiration, Gackt (and the fact he literally voices him), they have to pay Gackt money anytime that character appears profitable. So, a character "based on Gackt" is so relevant these days, that unless some other character is literally a clone of Genesis, it's not Gackt.
