3x Their defenses and 2x their attacks. It also puts a little cloud over their head and sometimes makes them deload from the game because its too much on screen as seen here:

Only happens once per fight and lasts 3 turns
Just respond back with your own or swap in someone with Protect. Also I think only gum leaders will do it against you so you don't have to worry about it 99% of the time
