It's literally just "we need to save the world" with an existential crisis for the MC and major party member death thrown in.
Probably because the materia system allows you to just make some really overpowered combos.

Why can't it be both? It's more like a bleak adventure with its pacing kept alive and intriguing with several campy moments and characters overcoming their emo arcs. It works because it's both, something I hope the remake will realize.
