When I was a kid I had a best friend who introduced me to to maplestory when we were in our first year of high school.
I was a dopey autistic little kid and also a really late bloomer, I'm well adjusted nowadays but I was barely sentient until like age 18 at least.

We would play maplestory together every night, and one night he came out to me about being Bisexual.
I had no idea what he was even saying so I just kinda brushed him off. At the time I thought he just didn't like me anymore when he stopped talking to me, but once I became an adult I realised that he was expecting something from me when he came out and I totally ignored him.
That moment is pretty vividly burned into my memory, he was my best friend in the whole world and my ignorance pushed him away. The resulting loneliness had really long lasting negative effects, though I probably wouldn't have pursued my artistic hobbies if I hadn't been such a loser through high school as a result of losing my only really good friend.

When I was maybe 15 back in 2006, I played endless online because it was an anime game, it was free, and my PC couldn't handle WoW. I spent probably actual months of time playing that game. But, after I spent maybe two weeks grinding death for a FUCKING crossbow, and drop hackers kept taking them if I was somehow able to get the final hit, I started hacking myself, and started selling them, and all the other drops from him, octopus, and the other bosses I had access to for real money (usually really low amounts, like, single digit dollar figures). Eventually an admin caught me doing it, red handed, and I told him I'd stop and he let me go.
I never stopped, and for another 6 months I sold so much shit, and despite the hundreds of hours I put in, I think I made maybe $500. A lot of cash to a 15 year old and it helped pay for a new computer. More importantly than the money I made, I made connections with so many other people who ran bot networks and it got me into programming bots for other games like runescape and maplestory, which I started using for RMT and moneymaking as well.

Endless online basically taught me the world sucks and to fuck everyone else to get ahead.

Nope, good ol' USA. Online interaction sets a pretty dangerous precedent though, or at least, it did. Things are so heavily moderated and chaperoned nowadays that people may not get to see reality but there's something about the 98-2006 era internet that really showed humanity in it's purest form. Those who could adapt to new technologies were everywhere, and ideologies from those people were the loudest. It shaped, I would argue, most of my generation and probably the generation of most people if they ended up on this shithole.
