The Japanese edition of D&D is generally very aesthetically pleasing. Too bad it took so long for tabletop roleplaying games to properly set foot in Japan. It would be interesting to see what kind of things Japanese game devs would do if they had the same source of inspiration as CRPGs.

Well, it is already the case, as DQ is a mix of Ultima and Wizardry. It's just a little bit sad that JRPGs didn't evolve as much as CRPGs did. It would be great to see something with design philosophy similar to Ultima Underworld, Arcanum, or Deus Ex coming from Japan, as they tend to do rather interesting interpretations of cultural phenomena that come from overseas.

I saw the old OVA and there's absolutely nothing interesting about the story characters or setting besides the visuals, it's as generic as it gets and I don't think they're even trying to not be generic. What's the actual appeal of Lodoss, is the manga or the tv show better or something? I really do love the art style and the character designs though.

Because the OVA isn't particularly good. The adventure isn't particularly interesting, the characters barely interact with each other and are about as one-dimensional as it gets, and the animation is a bunch of still pans and stock footage 95% of the time. It was like all of the boring parts of a DnD campaign, and the only reason why people like it so much is because of the character designs.

The TV series was so much better it was downright embarrassing. Spark seemed like he'd be an OC donut steel with his bright blue hair and ended up being a much more engaging protagonist with a much better party. Like, nobody in Parn's party ever talked to each other, or had banter, or any sort of character arc besides Deedlit wanting to fuck Parn while he was busy idolising kings. Even the Parn-focused parts are better than the original, and Ashram is a fantastic character. The animation quality varies wildly by episode but overall it has a lot more actual animation than the OVA.

I just don't know why people completely dismiss it. Are people really shallow enough that they only care about the higher quality of art of the OVA and not about anything else?

It's booming right now, actually. Sites like DriveThru RPG sell a lot of indie titles, modules, and supplements. They mainly deal with PDFs, but DriveThru allows print on demand in either hardcover or softcover, B&W or color. There are also not that many heartbreakers, thanks to OGL, perhaps the only thing that modern D&D did right.

TV series adaptions of OVAs aren't necessarily good regardless of the OVA's quality. I was pretty on the fence about touching it, but a good word on Yea Forums for a show is a good word in my books so I'll be sure to check it out sometime.

I thinking he's talking out his ass in regards to being better than the OVA but by itself it's a fine fantasy anime and it does offer a bit more in the ways of resolution.

The biggest problem though, and this might not be a big deal to some, but every episode wastes about 5 minutes on this little chibi segments which are not wholy unamusing but can really break the tone and honestly that time could be better spent on other parts of the story and they just sort of get old after a while.

Jinnai being the same was definitely the best part of Wanderers. But I don't know how you can say it was tighter focused when they stretched out a 7 episode OVA to 26 episodes and butchered Ifurita by turning her into a retarded ditz like Mihoshi in Tenchi.

I really liked Grimoire of Zero but to each his own. I really loved Grimgar, that was definitely my favourite show while it was airing. Mahoujin Guru Guru was a new adaptation of a 90s manga, so for 90s flavour it's about as pure as you could get. It was really refreshing in a world that's oversaturated in bad LN writers who have no experience with fantasy beyond Dragon Quest and other bad fantasy LNs.

Weird, but somewhat understandable. He had a lot of mannerisms and influence from the literature of that time, specifically Poe. Also, he lived in New England and a lot of his books took place there.

I'm a bit biased because I enjoyed the OVA way too much, but I liked Ifurita way too much to instead see her go full retard. Didn't help that The Magnificent World was a full, closed story that didn't really need further adaptions or sequels compared to say Tenchi, which was rough enough around the edges that it could only be enhanced by something like Tenchi Universe.

I think my favorite will always be Ruin Explorers. It's just a nice short goofy adventure that had moments of seriousness but never dwelled on them too long and just knew to be fun and not overstay it's welcome.

There's no fourth wall breaking humor and no eye rolling at genre conventions just some gags, some slap stick and running away from mice at road runner speeds with goofy sound effects.

Everything after the first two episodes derailed into ditching most of the goofy adventures to focus on the world's dullest DnD protagonist's story though. Ihrie is barely in the last episode, she's practically pushed out of her own show. it's a shame because I loved the first two episodes, when Lyle showed up I thought he was a parody of bland DnD protagonists and the episode was going to end with him being revealed to be a scumbag or something, then they played him utterly straight.

Anime always had a lot of stuff centered around being cute and appealing whether it was 80's, 90's, or 00's. It always sold well and always was on the forefront. It's just that we can look on past decades with retrospective and see the cream of the crop. The third episode was almost entirely the characters goofing around on a mother fucking boat. The only serious episode was the last one and three out of four episodes is still a pretty fair divide. And while Lyle was a touch bland someone needed to guide the actual plot and the other characters more than made up for him.

Yea Forums has a more or less decent discussion when thread manages to be niche enough so no children or horny teens would be interested, but popular enough so that it will not propel into the oblivion with only 5-10 replies. I occasionally catch nice thread for things like Legacy of Kain, EDF, or Mechwarrior, but those are rare in comparison to the main mass of garbage that circulates on this board.
