IIRC the only interaction between Sephiroth and Cloud (before Seph went crazy) that was explicitly shown (both in fake and true flashbacks) was Sephiroth asking Cloud how it feels to be back in his hometown. But it skipped through stuff, so it's unclear whether or not there was more.

Was that really JENOVA though? It feels like the game was never really clear if it was actually JENOVA who did this, or if it was just Cloud's psyche doing that by itself as a defense mechanism due to his traumic experiences, with JENOVA/Sephiroth simply taking advantage of that "weakpoint" later.

The whole point of that final fight was that he finally had the strength and self-confidence to kick Sephiroth out of his head for good. It needs to stay a solo, one-on-one insta-win or it loses all meaning.

Cloud thought he himself made it into SOLDIER like he promised Tifa. Early on he doesn't even remember Zack.

But Jenova is not a god or even a human and can't make things out of nothing. It just took everything Cloud knew about "being a SOLDIER" and smashed it together. Which was Zack's life story.
I can forgive it if you haven't played FFVII for 15+ years or only played when you were a kid or something but it is absolutely "really clear" that he was walloped over the head by an unwilling Jenova transformation.

No mention of being induced by JENOVA to do so. Since Cloud is not a full Jenova being, just someone carrying Jenova cells, he can't transform freely. There has to be an appropriate match, as seen when he tries to transform with the Shinra guardsman just before Tifa, but fails.

Are you being willfully oblivious? You can create a rhythm and timing, ideally to do other things, like a combo chain into a super move or something.
Do you complain when basic combos exist in God of War too or something? You could just mash one button but there's no guarantee of that being universally effective.

I only just noticed there's room for a lot more bars. There could be some real strategy if they do it right. Some enemies or large groups could need barrages of low cost abilities while other would need high cost specialized ones.

I already liked the look of the new combat but now I have slightly more hope.

This is true, I'm pretty sure a dev confirmed Cloud was a broken mess but the Jenova cells scanned Tifa's memories of him as a child and that's what made him remember he was Cloud, it then combined that with Zack's memories/stories and Cloud's own memories and broken psyche to create the new Persona. It's one of the main reasons Tifa knows Cloud is absolutely fucked in the head as soon as she meets him, because he went from a drooling retard into the new Persona after meeting her.

V was the last FF that actively introduced major new ability systems (Mix, Blue) before the series started to disappear up it's own ass with shitty references and callbacks (focusing almost exclusively on boring Black magic and Summons we've seen for almost thirty years now). It was very gameplay focused with a ton of content and options with no definitively best answers to combat (many things remaining useful throughout the game with a strong emphasis on utility abilities that were offensively oriented as well as for buffs). It and VI were the last games where the damage cap somewhat made sense (and even there the weakness of the concept reared its ugly head). Knowledge of game mechanics was encouraged over just brute forcing, but you could brute force to (albeit be punished). It actively catered to challenge runs (working swimmingly under low level conditions or single jobs) showing the robustness of the system. XII's rereleases got a lot of this right too, but lacked V's flavor and inventiveness (with XIII and LR suffering from the same problems in addition to fearing kicking players in the teeth).

VI was by no means bad, just not quite up to par with V. VII is where things started to really go downhill. Poorly thought out combat emphasizing direct damage (with an attack that completely shit on all others), ultimate weapons (abandoning the far more interesting situational usefulness of multiple weapon categories for a definitively best *brain dead* answer), fewer new ability sets, the difficulty dropping further from VI (where it stayed and has since been terrified of punishing dumb players), spectacle shit over interesting mechanics, dumb minigames, making story a bigger part (as another distraction from gameplay), etc.

No they don't, only Cloud changes between punisher and operator mode for his triangle action and its not any different than switching between two weapons mechanically, its not an actual stance like in nioh. each character has a different triangle action and Tifa's is called Bash, Barrets called Overcharge which is a charge shot

Tifa 7R combat is literally just Eight's combat from Type-0. And Eight has actual stances that you have in combat like Wildfire/raging fire Stance or Thunderclap stance or Gale stance etc, and he has the same uppercut spin, downward attack, spinning kick and normals that Tifa has and a bunch of others. Like how Tifa's Triangle attack is Omnipunch then Bash Eight has Diamond Knuckles to Rising Uppercut on whichever button you assign the Knuckles to.
