Dynamax, simplistic raids, stale gameplay, autistic grind mechanics (IVs, natures, abilities), lack of difficulty, restricting player exploration, mediocre dialogue (especially rivals), forcing shitty stories and cutscenes on the player, those PS2 tier graphics with their bland art style, removal of features (battle frontier, following Pokemon), poor battle animations...

Personally, I hope they don't add the national dex back just so we can see what the financial impact will be.

Gamefreak is incompetent as fuck. From what I understand, the big reason we're not getting all the pokemon is because of the dumbass dynamax gimmick, which has different models for each turn its active, meaning a pokemon like Rotom has over 40 models to itself for its shiny variant and all its alt modes. They didn't want to make it like mega evolving where only some can do it, and instead decided to only include a handful of pokemon from each region and most of gen1.

I'd rather have a complete smaller pokedex then have shitty animations and models on all of them.
National dex would also drain resources from other aspects of the game. Do people want another XY?

The average Pokemon model has around 5000 polygons, with the more complex ones going up to 1000 and the more simple ones at 2000-3000. That's a lot more work to make than some textures.

I'm torn about it, I don't like it that not all Pokemons will be in SS. But on the other hand I feel that a move like this was inevitable and game freak could only delay it for so long

I stopped caring about Pokemon once I grew up.

Compare Sword/Shield to lets say Monster Hunter World.
The roster in that game is a lot smaller and variety a lot lower compared to previous games.
But considering the huge technical jump the game made, with more animations and open areas with a lot more fidelity, the smaller roster makes a lot of sense.
Not to say that World is a better game, i still prefer the other games over it, but i'm just drawing a comparasion.
If the next game would be as much of a technical improvement as World and not look like an upscaled 3DS game, i would tolerate the lack of some Pokemon

Because they want to play VGC without wasting 200 hours every time they make a new team. Especially if I wanted, say, one of the Tapus with a specific hidden power and nature, I would have to buy Pokémon bank and delete my save, then replay the whole game, then save scum until I get the exact stats I need for the build.

Those would have been used for LGPE because it's only the original 151. Game Freak probably doesn't want to invest its resources into creating the animations for the other 650 pokemon because it's too expensive. A poor excuse, but probably the real reason.

Also, if they did animate every pokemon, I can't imagine it would be done with a lot of love. Think of the boring battle animations we saw in the demo and see in SM/ORAS. The models just jump or slap for an attack. There's no emotion or character in the animation. It really sucks because other games (Coliseum, Glad of Darknnss, XD) all had interesting animations for their pokemon rosters (Sableye comes to mind immediately).

Let's be real though - the next game is going to be LGKanto which will have all the animations fleshed out for that game. The trend will continue all the way to Pokemon Electron/Neutron in the year 2050

It's really dumb that of all the issues with gamefreak, the thing that normies give a shit about is the national dex.

Haven't played pokemon in years and wouldn't have interest in basically anything besides an official version of showdown.

The games have clearly been slapshod for years now, if this game looked better then missing half the dex would be more understandable, but either way I've got no interest in the game and I think the other usual problems are much worse than this.

Online trading made it trivially easy, if not particularly fun or rewarding.

I'm torn. I agree that there are too many Pokémon. Probably 1/3 of Pokémon are redundant and don't need to exist, yet every gen adds "New Pokémon to Discover!" that are just ratata, pidgey, caterpie, zubat, goldeen, oddish, etc. with a fresh coat of paint. If a Pokémon doesn't have at least two of a unique typing, moveset, ability, and stat spread, then it should probably never have been introduced.

However, that isn't really the fault of the Sword and Shield devs. All they can do is avoid adding to the problem and only add interesting Pokémon (they will fuck this up, almost certainly, like every gen does) while making good use of the ones that exist now.

The excuses for not including all Pokémon are bullshit. Doing retextures and slight model adjustments might be laborious but they have all the budget a game dev studio could ask for, if only they'd ask. Balancing the battles is a non-issue; just ban anything with no counters and few checks from VGC and let Smogon do Smogon things. Boom, the competitive scene is balanced, at least enough for Pokémon fans. Nobody cares about balance for the single player content unless there's large difficulty spikes or too much grind, neither of which have anything to do with how many Pokémon exist.

But really I'm more worried that the million other things that suck ass about Pokémon, so much that they keep the series restricted to 8/10 even if everything else was perfect, will remain unchanged for yet another generation. And from the treehouse demo it looks like it'll be more of the same.

In conclusion SwSh is gonna be 6-7/10, definitely, and national dex will probably be paid DLC

A feature present in most games is the ability to transfer pokemon from a game in the previous gen into it. This was usually locked to post game. SS now cut off certain pokemon species, making them incompatible with the game in all forms, be it transferring, trading or even battling against them because their data is not in the game.

So some have pretty much been moving their favorite pokemon from game to game since Ruby (a game that came out in 2005).

It's not that you can't catch every mon in this game, it is that you can't even get them in at all if they aren't part of the local dex.
You can still import old 'mons

Every previous game has had every single Pokemon. In the last game, the models they used were so high poly that they caused major framerate issues on the 3DS. This is because they had made these models with forward compatibility in mind.
In short, it will have less content than the $40 3DS entries in spite of the fact that the work is already done and that work being done has actually had a negative effect on previous games.

Even if the work hadn't already been done, they have more money than God and could still pay someone else to do the work in order to keep this game at least on par with previous entries.

I don't really care, I usually just play through the story and mess up on the battle tower equivalent ocassionally before moving on to a different game.
That said, I'll probably pirate SwSh rather than buying it.

Partly, a huge chunk of the "controversy" is also that things the been claiming to be reasons justifying it has been proven false AGES ago. and the import reason is for post-game, replays and multi-player.

Now add into that the the game is quickly proven to have lifted its models and animations of what is there is from Smash 4 when Sakurai said better graphics and expenses for models are the reason for the cuts, with confirmation that there will be no DLC at all. It's not about making new models ya ninnies. They already had Creatures Inc make high poly models by gen 6 along with their walking animations and other stuff. These were used already in LGPE with only partner pikachu and partner eevee getting different models. Only thing missing is tweaking shaders and texture work.
