As a participant it’s a little baffling to me too. I just maintain Cloud had romantic interest in Aerith, and Aerith is more the main heroine when averaging out the game’s discs due to her direct plot relevance.

While Tifa is sort of the twist love interest. A little neglected at first due to her canon issue expressing her feelings and being more the “betty” versus Aerith’s “veronica”. And the way in which they broach this with cloud’s memories is genuinely well written to be sure, dont want to sell her short.

Some aerithfags like to imply Cloud does not actually love Tifa, some tifafags like to imply Cloud never liked Aerith. It’s sort of an immature inability to reconcile that it was a true love triangle and a very well executed one.

There’s also the perception that due to dying relatively early Aerith got kind of a raw deal in the story.

I love the original for how well written Tifa and Cloud's relationship is. They were barely friends as kids, but she had the playful attitude of stringing along an attractive boy like Cloud when he wanted to make the big promise. In essence they think she is a stronger character overall, and that her death hits hardest when this is appreciated.

Fans of Tifa tend to be more focused on the fact that Tifa “wins the cloudbowl” (even shown in this thread) because a late game twist is centered around her past with Cloud. You see, the reason Aerith dies is she runs off to stop Meteor because Cloud gets mind controlled by Sephiroth to give him the Black Materia. The second act twist is the writers resolving that subplot and writing themselves out of the corner. However they deftly weaved in Tifa’s story and past with Cloud to do it. And it gives a lot of emotional resonance to the both of them. And it’s an example of Tifa helping Cloud, giving her points in dependability. Plus big titties.

But the game IS clearly following the original's narrative as a frame of reference (but not scope) so I don't think that kind of gimmicky DLC stuff will happen.

It is insulting on so many levels to think that Cloud could love Aeris, lose her in most traumatic way possible, and then get over it 5 days later and bang Tifa. The devs seemed to make you want to love Aeris and mourn her, but then disc 2 pretty much asks you to forget about her. The execution is very poor and it seems like they didn't know how to handle the player's emotions in a consistent way. People either didn't care she died or they never got over it, they can't have it both ways

There is really no contradiction. Neither Tifa or Aerith are completely jaded or independent despite some people trying to act like they are polar opposites in that regard.
The only real difference is Aerith is more open with her emotions and has no trouble saying "I just wanna spend time with you" while Tifa is more reserved.
