Before it launched the console was code named PlayStation X. The gaming media called it PSX, and even though the X was dropped the name stuck, especially online, where people would rather say PSX than spell out "PlayStation."

Because PS sounded lame. That's the actual explanation I got from someone in 1996, and he wasn't wrong.
A small footnote: The code PlayStation X came from the ongoing dispute between Sony and Nintendo at the time. Sony didn't have the right to use PlayStation, so for the time being they used PlayStation X. Later on it stuck.
Even just before the launch of PS2, people were calling it "PSX2"

I remember people online bitching about it back then since lots of people were still calling the original console the PSX despite Sony insisting it was to be called the PS1 from now on (and even named that tiny version of the console the PS One to drive home that fact).
