Former Rareware Employee here. I worked there from September 1993 until 2011. Now for some tidbits you may or may not interesting.
>The N64 almost received a sequel to the obscure game Snake Rattle&Roll. It was however canceled after the team decided to make Blast Corps instead.
>Banjo Kazooie almost had a split screen coop mode where one player would control banjo and the other kazooie. It turned out to be too much but we sort of bought the idea back for Tooie though without the multiplayer component.
>DK64 was almost a 2.5D platformer similar to Klonoa. Boss fights as well as minecart riding, etc would have taken place in a traditional 3D platformer perspective. DK and Diddy would have also been the only playable characters and depending on who you chose would determine then level layout.

Rare was a good company my dude. Not sure what they are up to now.
Did Grant ever dip his balls in your tea?
If Nintendo bought the company outright before 2002, what games would you guys have developed for the GameCube?
Proof or gtfo, nigger
this image makes me want to vomit
Reading this sure makes me feel some emotions.
19 months of work for naught
I usually don't believe anons even when they provide ""proof"" but the scenario OP created is so realistic to typical office politics and executive meddling that I wouldn't remotely be surprised if something extremely similar to this did in fact happen.
How does it feel to be overrated by fanboys when you know you weren't even top 5 dev at the time?
Is the Zoo any good?
This is probably a fake story.
This guy seems to mention the existence of a Gamecube Banjo title that was deconfirmed for ever coming close to existing by an actual member of Rare on Twitter, makes for a good story though
this makes me so fucking mad
It is fake, see and pic related
>It was however canceled after the team decided to make Blast Corps instead.
Good call.
While I agree the post is likely fake I never really bought the "Gamecube Banjo was never a thing" story since one of the earliest tech demo's Rare made for the Gamecube was for Banjo.
Maybe it got canned during the pre-development stage but to not once plan a Banjo game in the Gamecube when they literally already had assets of them for the console is a little fishy.
Bullshit there was a preview trailer of banjo threeie somewhere around.
It was a buncha fucking characters just chasing banjo
>the tomboy princess will never be real
i guess we live in the worst timeline after all, reading all of the makes me more sad than mad, fuck microsoft
>DK64 was almost a 2.5D platformer similar to Klonoa
Fuck, i wish we would had gotten that game instead, DK64 sucks
You imagined it.
I dont trust Grant to much to be honest, he is the main composer but thst doesnt mean he knows everything rare is doing
Imagine this fucker
youtube.com
That was the tech demo I mentioned here It never flat out confirmed Threeie but like I said, it showed they made a whole bunch of assets for Banjo so to say it was never ever planned seems disingenuous.
Like it's one thing if it was like that 100 Mario tech demo that only used one model and became the basis of Pikmin to show off a bunch of AI fucking around. But they remodeled dozens of characters. That can't be for no reason.
You mean this?
>Bullshit there was a preview trailer of banjo threeie somewhere around.
>It was a buncha fucking characters just chasing banjo
It wasn't a trailer. It was part of a gamecube demo, you know for the console not any game in particular. Kinda like Super Mario 128, just a bunch of stuff happen at once to show the power of the console.
It even used the Banjo Tooie models, nothing new.
That was just a CG short made to hype up the gamecube, nothing more
>But they remodeled dozens of characters.
They literally remodeled nothing. See
that five second clipped explained exactly nothing and looked like the N64 games
jesus the amount of cope here
Why nobody stopped Miyamoto from changing dinosaur planet?
What was it like working under Nintendo? Did you feel a sense of competition between yourselves and their teams who made similar games? Did they ever bully you guys?
super mario 128 was actually pikmin though
Does Stop n Swop unlock banjo threeie?
I kinda wished they adapted the original concept of project dream
even after banjo success
is amazing how that goes nowhere or to be a different game
while sea of thieves get approved.
How that happen baffles my mind.
platformers dont make easy money
It was basically just a 2.5D Banjo game, wasn't it?
They used to. Personally I believe they still can. I'm sure there's a huge audience for them as seen with the success of Crash and Mario.
>but those are established franchises
Yeah, I know. It definitely wouldn't be "easy" like you said but I think if developers actually tried making platformers again eventually they'd catch on and we could actually see the return of new IPs. That'll never happen though because they're all corporate cowards afraid of losing money.
why did you faggots leak Twelve Tales?
It was going to be western rpg
similar to dragon quest.
the idea got discarded because it was to complex at the time.
at least for rare.
It mutated to a platform games to make things more easy for devs.
Legit makes me mad especially considering what we got instead of Banjo-Threeie was a stinky turd that killed the franchise and now it’s up to based Nintendo to do what Microsoft couldn’t do for over 10 fucking years
Oh, what the fuck? I had only seen the Banjo part. I can't believe they somehow turned the original concept into Banjo Kazooie over time.
youtube.com
This story is bullshit. Why would Grant Kirkhope (a composer) have much of an input on how the gameplay worked?
seniority. small details like the urchin shit make it believable, though it could have just been written by a dude with a nice imagination
>Legit makes me mad especially considering what we got instead of Banjo-Threeie was a stinky turd that killed the franchise and now it’s up to based Nintendo to do what Microsoft couldn’t do for over 10 fucking years
Nintendo haven't bought Banjo though. He's only getting a place in Smash, really, nowadays it's like a garbage bin for dead characters.
Fuck Microsoft
Geno isn't in though.
Okay, how about the guy who actually designed the Banjo games and still works at Rare to this day?
even if it was, I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't allowed to speak on it
Jesus Christ
>Rareware Employee
>tidbits
Don't think so m8.
fake and gay
Is banjo getting a new game?
So Mr.Rare employee. You sound pretty legit, I've been meaning to ask. What was the purpose of this Easter Egg in nuts and bolts? Was it a planned Banjo Kazooie project but sadly never got off the ground?
gave me a flat out depressing reason as to why Nuts and Bolts was made, but what the fuck was the point of this? I can't get an answer from Grant nor the Mayles brothers on Twitter, so what was the point of this???
The Easter egg in question .
My dad works for nintendo
DK64 as a 2.5D game seems like it would've been pretty rad, not gonna lie.
wow. did they actually think that game was going to be good?
i think thats the joke
Is a shame that never became a game on his own.
yet rare had no problem in making kinect garbage and that shitty pirate game.
It actually kind of seems like the opposite. Nuts and Bolts had plenty jokes about how their old style was "outdated" and how they needed to appeal to the masses by getting with the times. This Easter egg is set on top of a classic Banjo backdrop. Pretty depressing.
no.
the self deprecating humour
only make it worse.
Just tell us about via pinata.
Was the heavy copy protection in your N64 games mandated by Nintendo or was that something you did as your own decision?
i have always wondered this.
the beginning of the game, explaining how "collectathons" are bad by giving a shitty example was too much even for Rare. so i always thought that the developers where actually mocking their own game (nuts and bolts), by giving the totally opposite example...
I always felt like they wrote shit like this out of spite. I just can't believe they'd shit on their own fanbase so hard, unironically.
give me details on perfect dark please. n64 was epic, multiplayer ai bots were great. why was the Xbox version so bad? any cool insider info into the series?
>L.O.G flat out stating they weren't going to get another game
How big of a slut is kazooie?
Does banjo have an hairy asshole like i do?
If mumbo is so jumbo then why doesnt wumbu humbu his junga?
shit, i've been clowned
just trying to cover it up
you think people would have liked nuts and bolts if it wasnt a banjo game?
Any interesting shit about Diddy king racing? i loved this game back then.
Are you fucking retarded? It's not some hint for a new game. It's literally just saying;
>Banjo Kazooie is 10 years old and people still think about it. Will people care about Nuts and Bolts in 10 years?
Stfu bong. you mad because you lost the revolutionary war? go drink your tiny cups of tea like girl
It's still more of a product than a smash inclusion.
I miss that time, user. Now Rare is shit
where's your proof of employment?
Yes. The vehicle gameplay is fun and the creation is a unique mechanic I don't think I've seen done anywhere else.
I like that while they make vehicle parts hard to get to without trolley upgrades, you can still get the crates and get good items early if you do so. It's a very nonrestrictive game.
Even in challenges where you're forced to use a L.O.G vehicle, you can get out of it and edit it. Makes that motorcycle mission in Banjoland a breeze.
Classic Rareware was a brilliant company. Thanks for the information.
What he means is are they asking that because they think Nuts and Bolts is good enough to be remembered in a decade or the opposite. I think the only reason we're even talking about Nuts and Bolts right now is because Banjo made it into Smash.
Possibly. Last time I played Nuts and Bolts was March.
Will rare ever be as good as it used to be?
Will banjo ever get a new game?
they were genuinely pissed
can you blame them?
they got forced into making that dogshit
How is Twycross? Have you met Martin Hollis?
I hope that those 3 ms suits that rejected Banjo Threeie have died already. Preferably in violent car accidents or something...
ya and there was a canceled ocarina of time remake for gamecube and canned TP remake for Wiiu too
I'm hoping that Microsoft and Rare allowing Banjo and Kazooie appearing in Smash was a way to gauge interest in a reboot/revival of the series. Hopefully with the amount of acclaim they've seen with them being added they might consider it.
Didn’t both of those happen
Because that worked so well for F-Zero
Anything you have on other canceled games for these guys besides Astro Mouse (Pipsy) and beta-DKR (Timber)?
ports arent remakes
>they got forced into making that dogshit
Is what you WANT to think.
Yet all Rare employees, former or current, have only ever said positive things about their experience making it.
The dude in 's screencap is lying. Anyone can order a custom shirt with whatever image you want in it (in this case being a Rare logo), and anyone can print out a signed image to put in a frame. The employee card was probably printed as well.
Besides, former Rare employees don't seem to have any restrictions on talking about cancelled projects. You'd think they would have at least mentioned Banjo-Threeie on this interview: invidio.us
Also, consider what said.
Nintendo is retarded. No comparison.
Prove it
So I think this was meant to show off how many unique characters could show up in one place at once without causing lag or anything?
how accurate are these videos:
how did you FEEL when Microsoft completely fucked Rare
Also the N&B interview reveals lots of details that don't show up in the lying faggot's posts.
First off, the Banjo remake only got as far as Mumbo's Mountain. No mention of Treasure Trove Cove.
Secondly, Nuts & Bolts is explicitly stated to have started development as a Banjo title.
And finally, NO BANJO-THREEIE WITH RULE 34 BAIT TOMBOY
from what I've heard from interviews most of them wanted the buyout
The Crash and Spyro remakes sold very well, and Hat in Time and Mario Odyssey were positively received. If there were ever a time to make a new Banjo game, even a remake, it's now.
That's a pretty poor comparison.
That would be fine too. I loved the original idea of remaking Banjo-Kazooie but having some differences in the story and the characters aware they're in a remake.
I don't understand why their games became so much worse after the jump. Is it a matter of quality control?
nice bait lol
hows the lucky fox platformer game doing?
>Grunty takes over LOG's factory and tries to turn the original game into Banjo-Kinectie
would it be kino
Rare were the ones who left Nintendo. Game development was becoming too expensive and Nintendo either couldn't or weren't willing to put-out. So Rare left.
And honestly. Could you imagine Rare ending up under Activision rather than Microsoft? I much rather prefer Microsoft owning them than Activision.
>Kazooie: Sheesh, it's been how long since our last game and the best we can get is a remake? Guess I expected a bit more.
>Banjo: It ain't so bad, Kazooie. Look on the bright side. Now our games will be introduced to a brand new generation.
>Kazooie: Yeah yeah. Just hope that the developers don't botch it, or else it's back to fixin' up cars for us.
>Banjo: Gulp...
>Mumbo has a rare chance of accidentally turning you into your N&B design
>he's like "oh god I'm so sorry" and changes you back
no one really cared at that point anymore, the entire Perfect Dark/Goldeneye team had just left at that point and Gamecube games as we come to find were getting way too expensive and time consuming to make at the rate that we were pumping out SNES/64 games. Miyamoto and Nintendo have had a lot of influence in past games too, not just Dinosaur Planet
Nintendo were the ones who wanted DK64 out in the states for the holiday and really advocated for 'the crunch,' even allowing for the development of the expansion pak to help the memory leaks that tend to come from an inexperienced team working under a high pressure deadline
DKR uses a lot of assets from Dream
No
All except Krunch and T.T. had concept art for games, but it was just ambitions
What made you leave with an almost 20 year history? Just couldn't stand what Rare was becoming?
>gamecube was too expensive to make
>if they only survived one more generation they could have made some fun wiiware games and helped push nintendo's online
I can barely read that
My wet dreams is a Banjo-Kazooie game in which Grunty is also a playable character and joins forces with his old enemies because they all end up sharing the same mortal enemy, the L.O.G.
who do we bug to get the 'velvet dark' design document? or can you give us a summary of the story and gameplay upgrades?
Is there even the slightest possibility of all the 3D models used to make DKC's rasterized graphics still sitting around on a hard drive somewhere, or are they long gone and lost to history?
MBA graduation ceremonies should be held in fucking gas chambers
Why would Microsoft cancel Banjo 3 but greenlight Viva Pinata?
VP is WAY farther out of left field than an already established 3D puzzle platforming collectathon IP, 64 and Sunshine were a thing.
rerendering DKC or rare's other games in HD would be magnificent, we should bug every ex-rare employee until they give an answer
I remember reading on some interview that they stored them on floppies.
If that's the case, any hopes of an actual soulful remaster are dead. Enjoy your soulless toothy grin.
I dont think they'd just throw out the 3d models for their most successful game
Rare was always hopeless.
fixed
Whats up with Banjo's design for N&B anyways? It seriously looks creepy.
>All except Krunch and T.T. had concept art for games, but it was just ambitions
I need to know more user.
If they exist they certainly wouldn't be at Microsoft. I don't know if 90s stuff gets archived at Nintendo.
>twitter.com
>twitter.com
You could try asking these Rare blokes but they don't work there anymore. They sometimes tweet about the old Silicon Graphics stuff.
You never know what could happen. RE0 HD made higher resolution sprites directly from the original models and looks amazing, but they somehow lost all the originals for REmake so it's just muddy upscaling with tilers.
They were trying to update their design but still try and keep it 'faithful' to their original design.
They wanted to ""update"" Banjo, and thought that high resolution models of the N64 designs lacked their polygonal charm.
Here's one of their attempts.
Are you sure that isnt some random deviantart image?
Nope, it's official Rare shit.
And here's the last one I've got.
its shit alright.
WHY DOES IT KEEP HAPPENING BROS
Even in artwork those eyes are somewhat unsettling.
Reminder that B-K almost got a cartoon like Viva Pinata and pic related was apparently the finalized design for Banjo.
nerdspan.com
Holy yikes
Was the viva pinata cartoon even any good? I keep forgetting about it.
Yeah. Thank god Smash made them big, nice, bright and googly.
Oh jesus that garbage is giving me serious Johnny Test vibes.
Grant Kirkhope seemed to like it at least.
>Technology has improved so much, what should we do with all this newfound freedom?
>Lets make everything butt ugly!
WE LIVE IN A SOCIETY
Why did Seavor and his minions decide to do Live & Reloaded instead of the sequel
Tell me everything about Conker
Is it true you made it adult to get back at journalists?
Was there ever a sequel planned?
Did nintendo try to stop the game from being made?
actually soulless
Ty is that you?
>Was there ever a sequel planned?
Not faggot liar OP, but Chris Seavor recently posted part of the design document for Other Bad Day on his Twatter.
twitter.com
I went to art school for 4 years.
I had to know how to draw fine art, still life, anatomy, etc just to get in.
after finishing school, I interviewd for jobs at lucasfilm, pixar, disney, etc
never got call back
BUT THIS SHIT ......this shit here is what the studio accepts for concept art. this guy gets hired to draw this. why bother learning how to draw when obviously the shittiest art "styles" are what companies use?
Oh man Id kill to be in the timeline where it was released
>Banjo almost got the nu-Battletoads treatment
shiet
>DK64 was almost a 2.5D platformer similar to Klonoa. Boss fights as well as minecart riding, etc would have taken place in a traditional 3D platformer perspective. DK and Diddy would have also been the only playable characters and depending on who you chose would determine then level layout.
Fuck, this would be good. I like DK64, but 2.5 DK with 3D cart levels would be tight.
>Chris Seavor: I started designing it [Conker 2] and we were going to do it. They just wanted it quickly. It was coming to the end of the life cycle of the Xbox, and there was talk of them going, look, can we just shift this over to the 360, which was a year away? I was really against that because I just couldn’t face spending another two years on a game we’d already spent a year and a half on. So I guess it was probably my fault.
REEEEEEE
Should've picked something that was in demand...
Based suit dabbing on a played out boring genre
Grant also said he was in no way informed of banjo's appearance in smash
you KNOW thats fucking bullshit. grant is a professional and good at playing ball like one
oh this must be a fantastic pic then. I'll use it in my portfolio for all these shitty flash cartoons on cartoon network.
the entire game was made out of spite
Whats this, the new "I work in Bethesda guys, ask me what kind of porn mods Todd likes?"
I understand that you are a former Rare employee but I'm curious on whether or not you'd have insight on if they'd consider making another Conker title.
We all know he is into cucking
>new
People have been LARPing as former Rarefags since the Microsoft buyout, user.
Eh, at least we got a somewhat salvageable thread out of this.
Much better than other shitty fake leaks.
>the beginning of the game, explaining how "collectathons" are bad by giving a shitty example was too much even for Rare.
You do understand that Gregg Mayles was tired of boring collectathons, right? There's a reason we got something like Nuts & Bolts. There's a reason Mayles went on to make Sea of Thieves. The creator of Banjo would rather eat broken glass than make another game that plays like Banjo Kazooie/Tooie. It is baffling that gamers can't comprehend that the reason we haven't gotten another Banjo is because the creator won't let Microsoft make another Banjo.
Why no one wants to fake being a Bioware employee I wonder?
I meant you should've picked something other than becoming an artist. Like what the fuck were you thinking?
Todd is pure.
True enough, he doesnt want your body, only your wallet
I wonder how many messages he gets in a single day about Threeie.
>should've picked something other than becoming an artist.
I don't know. never had any guidance growing up and I always wanted to be a filmmaker. but film school was too expensive (and I didn't have the tools for the demo flm for audition) art was the easiest way I thought I could create my stories.
boy was I wrong. I should have went to film school stead. maybe rent a camera back then they were super expensive back then)
You'd be surprised. Marty O'Donnell was Halo's composer, yet he was involved in pretty much every step of the series production. Grant having the same level of involvement isn't that unlikely.
>thinking he could actually make money doing something he liked
That's not how it works anymore.
Wait, he went on to make Seas of Thieves? I really need to try that, I'm fascinated how old guard like him just dont seem interested in revisiting the past.
I know...now.
I just don't know what else to do that I won't be fucking depressed yet I can make some fucking money.
OP, tell me about Donkey Kong Racing.
>Wait, he went on to make Seas of Thieves?
Remember that Banjo was originally Project Dream, a pirate-themed game.
Battletoads actually got the shitty cartoon treatment back in the day
Retsupurae's video on it is legendary, watch it
still looks better than the new game.
Gregg definitely comes off to me as sort of a forward thinking guy that doesn't want to stay in place for too long.
The same thing happened with Donkey Kong Country. Gregg and his team made the first two games and were tired of it after that and thus wanted to move on to greener pastures, so they handed the series off to a new B-team at Rare who went on to make DKC3 and DK64 while the original team went on to work on Project Dream, which morphed into Banjo-Kazooie.
As pointed out, they were planning on doing the same thing after Tooie. Rather than beginning to work on Banjo 3, they opted to work on an all new IP for GCN, that being Ghoulies.
fatal assrape
Well I got into Healthcare. My recent job offer is $130k managing a 120+ bed hospital if I get accepted.
>david wise wrote the pilot
Why did you decide to go with Nut'n'bolts instead of Banjo 3?
I have a feeling that you were going with BK3, and then changed your mind in the middle of the project.
Why was that?
Also, why did you change the artstyle to that blocky one?
cool. I wish I could get excited for those kind of jobs. good money though.
how long did it take you to get in the field?
Someone who wrote the Ninja Turtles cartoon had the same name. Poetic huh?

they could be reconstructed from the rasters, it would need a bit of hand cleanup but that kind of thing is definitely possible
About Banjo-Tooie...
We know that the game was supposed to have 6 eggs.
I suppose that the Dragon Kazooie was supposed to be one of the eggs.
The crystal key was actually supposed to be used on the fridge inside DK64 house...
So that leave us with two eggs without a "purpose", what were that eggs? What abilities it was supposed to give us?
Also, what's the deal with the "bad" egg from Banjo-Kazooie that you can access through cheats?
What a sour cunt
not them but the blocky asthetic makes sense with nuts and bolts block building design
He just wants to move on.
Getting asked every single day about a cartoon bear you couldn't give two fucks about must be painful.
whats the companies excuses for not hiring good artists (or hiring good artists ) and making their artwork look like a 4 year olds finger painting?
Just draw furry porn and open a subscribestar
>He just wants to move on
>Picture from Banjo-Tooie is literally his profile picture
What a great way of going about it. Not distancing yourself from what you want to get away from at all and just bitching at everyone.
He's just a sour cunt.
I think that comment's meant to be more tongue in cheek than it appears.
He made a similarly self-deprecating comment about K. Rool when he was revealed last year
I think it's the opposite, England people are known for their sarcastic humor. They knew it was bad.
Even worse, he's always praising fanart and stuff, yet he and Craig Duncan won't do anything with the series. Even though the old execs didn't want to go forward, Phil would probably bankroll it these days.
> Hopefully with the amount of acclaim they've seen with them being added they might consider it.
No.
does it say "disguh-huhsting"? it has potential but damn that text is pixelated
Dong Cunt 2 is one of my absolute favorite games. Real top tier shit. Perfect even, maybe.
Why did this game turn out so good and why are some Rare games so bad? Like well DK64 as a good comparison.
Yeah I read it B-team but Dong 3 was perfectly fine but 64 big yik.
Salty Steve, watch his seethe. Watch him cope! Laugh with Grant Kirkhope!
Jollyjack's art is fairly inoffensive and the in-game models are less weird and harsh-looking than the high quality renders used in the promotional art
this and this
>porn
I've seriously thought about doing this. not sure tho.
Jesus, it just keeps getting worse.
I wouldn't do it if I could do almost anything else. Being constantly immersed in that "culture" seems like one of the fastest routes to legitimate soul death.
lol right? plus I'd probably get tired of porn after drawing it so much. not sure if thats good or bad tho ha.
I doubt I'm good enough to make a living drawing dicks and shit.
