In light of recent events with the smash reveal, I started playing Dragon Quest XI. I'm currently on Act 2 and I think this gameplay is extremely good.
I want to get more into the series, what are the best ways to start?
I see that 4, 5, and 6 are on the DS. If possible, I want to own physical copies of the games because I am a collector.
5 is definitely a fine place to go when you're done with 11. I'd reserve 4 and 6 until you're a bit more into the series though. 8 is another one people usually go to after their first DQ assuming it wasn't their first DQ. I'd also recommend 3 as another way to go from any of these. You can go from there.
Asher Martin
5 is considered one of the best ever. 7 is available to emulate but it should get a remake soon, if it's not already out, and that game is amazing... for fans. It's extremely self-indulgent but it's a very solid attempt to make one of the best RPGs ever.
8 is super god, on 3DS. I'd recommend 8>5>7 if you like 11 a lot. 4 and 6 are super solid but 8 is just the easiest to get into and will have a lot of familiar features. 1,2, and 3 are fun but are for series enthusiasts only, they haven't been updated in a long time.
Chase Gray
If you're gonna go full in. Start with I before III and IV before V. Trust me on this. Don't look up any spoilers. You can skip II but playing I before III if you're blind will be amazing. IV before V has it's moments too. It's not required but you'll feel glad that you did.
Alexander Scott
Dragon quest XI is basically DQ VIII-2 gameplay wise, so try that.
Michael Lewis
>7 is available to emulate but it should get a remake soon, if it's not already out The 7 remake has been out for 3DS for a few years now.
There is no defense. It's just the way it always has been in DQ. The one game that's more or less unchanging. Let us have this one bro. You can take Etrian Odyssey.
Andrew Miller
It's not really a matter of defense. It's just how it always was for the longest time.
John Morgan
>The one game that's more or less unchanging you make it sound like thats a good thing
Fans of the style don't mind it. I'll sweeten the bargain. Take Etrian and SMT.
Carter Wood
He worded it wrong. Beyond that it hasn't been true since 9 on the ds. Even the 7 and 8 remakes on 3ds have on screen, avoidable encounters.
Joshua Lee
But DQ doesn't have random encounters since DQ 9 though.
Jackson Gomez
Of course it's a good thing. Sticking to its roots for the past 33 years has given it its own identity compared to other JRPG series' which can't seem to sit still for 5 fucking seconds before changing something up.
Thomas Perez
Alright I'll try >Ensures you need to be prepared for variety of enemies in an area, not just able to keep a distance from ones you're not ready for >Makes it harder to grind rare enemies like metal slimes Uhhh... I dunno man. Anyone got anything else?
Robert Stewart
XI has it on the 2d version. As do the mobile ports.
Brandon Nguyen
you're no better than CoD fags
Jackson Lewis
People like what they like man. Idk what to tell you. There are hundreds of other jrpgs that change the formula. What's wrong with one staying the same?
Justin Johnson
Play 3 4 5 6 and forget the rest cause they are shit
Lucas Gomez
After the introduction of tactics I certainly don't see the point any more.
Ayden Hughes
And you're a sticker star sucker.
Samuel Wood
Yes, enjoying the fact that a series has not had an identity crisis in the tens of years it's existed is a bad thing. CoD is also nowhere near the same. They always try to change shit in CoD, and it's always for the worse.
