Now that Windows 7 thread is dead, it is time to discuss how to make Linux even more awesome for gaming than it already is.

Hello. This is my desktop.
Most games I have on Steam run perfectly (or almost) through Proton.
I currently run Xubuntu. Things have mostly been alright. I only play 2/3 games though, but I never get crashes or bugs (even for things other than games)t, it's great.
And the absence of bloat there was in win10 is good too.
>tomboys and short hair
man of taste
looks good, I like it
>Xubuntu
good choice
Don't forget to check out Lutris, as it offers Steam integration and installers for many games that are not on Steam
Will check it out!
I'm also looking for game recommendations. I am looking for lightweight games that still have some depth and mostly reward persistence. The kind of game you can play for a thousand hours and still improve at.
Preferably not something exclusively online. Can be terminal based too.
Not I'm, but I run lutris under my xubuntu, and fucker won't let me play nfs payback, bought it on sale last week on origin. Played few hours, now can't launch it no matter which runner I chose. Proton won't even let me launch origin... Fucking EA and their bs.
Gonna try Arch soon, wish me luck.
Did nvidia improve their drivers for Linux? If no, how good are AyyMD graphics cards?
good luch user
Remember to add "btw I use Arch" to your signature
AMD has problems with opengl performance but vulkan is fine and you also get access to gallium nine which gives you pretty much native performance in directx 9 games through wine/proton.
Linux gaming thread? More like gay people thread!
I feel like a nigger asking, but what's good about using Linux over Winblows?
only 2 things that hold me back from using linux at this point is driver support and support for games
What games fren?
It's hard to explain, honestly. If I said "more control over your system", would you be convinced? Probably not.
At first glance using Linux seems impractical (not hard), but after ~1 week of experience you'll begin to wonder why the fuck you've been using a retarded OS like Windows.
Try installing Xubuntu or something in a virtual machine and take your own conclusions.
Linux has good driver support and gaming is getting better by the day.
Honestly if all the software I used on windows had a free linux version that worked just as well, and since I'm on linux it's just like when I was on windows except now I don't get bugs all the time.
Note this is only my experience.
according to protondb a lot of games from my steam backlog is between silver to "borked"
specifically batman arkham knight, hell yeah! and resident are ones that i'm looking forward to and they seem to have problems
i also can't tell how well games even run on linux systems since some sources i found show better performance in some games while others show worse performance and i'm very confused
>Linux has good driver support
well i'm glad if that's the case since last i heard nvidia drivers weren't all that great on linux
>last i heard nvidia drivers weren't all that great on linux
They're not great, but they get the job done. If gayming is the main reason you won't switch to Linux, maybe it isn't for you after all.
The performance of the drivers themselves is fine, though not as good as Windows. The problem with NVIDIA drivers is their support for the whole Linux ecosystem. Their open source drivers are pretty much reverse engineered with no help from NVIDIA. So this means the drivers you can build in with the kernel suck ass. Also, when people were developing the Wayland API NVIDIA decided they could do it better and created their own special snowflake interface and then promptly gave up. So if you want to use Wayland with NVIDIA then enjoy setting up a retarded compatibility layer.
You have to spend so much time setting up shit and looking things up that Linux gives you the illusion of being productive.
That's only Gentoo and Arch.
that's exactly what makes me worry about switching to linux, despite windows 10's problems i at least can expect programs and stuff to work fine and i know it's fully supported on my platform unless the devs specifically state otherwise
They are definitely functional under Linux. If you're installing a simple distribution like Ubuntu it will most likely set you up with the open source drivers and Wayland configured. If you want the proprietary drivers you'll just need to tell the system to install them and it should handle it.
>according to protondb a lot of games from my steam backlog is between silver to "borked"
I'm actually surprised how many games I've recently bought are either Gold/Platinum or are just natively supported on that list. Maybe within the next year or so, things will get even better and I can make that full time switch.
The biggest barrier to more games working through Proton is mostly DRM and anti-cheat engines.
Does KDE still shit itself on Nvidia graphics cards? I'm not buying AMD for Linux. I wanted to use KDE neon, but it would crash fresh installed before even getting to the desktop.
Gaming-wise it's obviously worse than Windows, but as of now it's good enough for my needs.
Non-gaming daily use is straight up better than what MS offers.
Now watch as people pretend they totally need Autodesk and Adobe Premiere on their home PC.
I just pirated windows 10. It works fine and Yea Forums lied to me like always.
Linux users often display cult-like behavior
Linux is awesome the way it is.
The less they try to cater to normalfags, the better.
Mac users often display cult-like behavior
>get most up to date wine staging
>get lutris
>tick dxvk checkbox
>all of your vidya works flawlessly
Playing a proudly pirated FFXII Zodiac Age right now. Can't even tell it's not running natively.
>Gaming-wise it's obviously worse than Windows
It's not really obvious unless you're talking about number of native games. Some games run better on Windows, others better on Linux. Bizarrely, the native Linux version of Ark runs like shit, but the the Windows executable running in WINE gives better performance than running in Windows itself.
I was generalizing a bit, but in virtually all cases the game will just work on Windows or can be made to work very easily, while on linux I still have to ask myself "will it work at all?"
There are exceptions though, especially with 32 bit Win games that don't happen to have gog's blessing. I'm playing Gruntz in Lutris with zero issues right now, and on modern Windows I pretty much gave up on running that game properly.
well yeah but if you installed anything else that would make a filthy casual
What are the best resources to learn bash synthax and generally how to properly use the terminal?
Windows spies on you and they're trying to sell the OS as a service rather than standalone software.
Use the terminal whenever you think it would benefit you, and when you don't know things, google them
That's what I did and I am very confident with the terminal now
Otherwise this is the site I met the most when searching for bash things, it's very useful

Everytime some linuxfag posts their desktop they always show that useless stat information bar. do you fags just like to whip your tiny dicks at each other or what?
You can't go around posting linux desktops without neofetch.
you have complete control over your PC - no obligatory updates, no bloat, minimal housekeeping running on the background
while windows games compatibility is not quite there linux is a better gaming choice than for example mac where you have literally nothing to play unless you opt for retroarch or something
