I'm fine with the revenants and the dual cannon guys, but the pain elementals are just the worst fucking enemy I've ever seen in a game. I roll my eyes whenever they show up.

You're probably a 98-01 born superzoomer and haven't even gotten to the levels with Arch-viles yet. Frankly the level design isn't as good as Doom 1, but still the top of the industry in 1994 and an honest joy to play through. The new enemies, while hard push you to innovate and the super shotgun is the best weapon in the series period.

I never liked the supershotgun. Too much spread and the reload was too slow, I much preferred the original.

Nothing in that episode is nearly as bad as something like The Pit or Refueling Base. Its also not really even a part of Doom 1. Its essentially a bonus episode for the re-release.

It's alright and the levels are just levels even the gimmicky ones kind of set the stage for modders/mappers going forward and I wouldn't say any of them are bad
new enemies and weapon are all good additions

Barrels of Fun is one of the more easier levels though.
