If I have my OS on my /c/ drive, and all my pictures, videos and other files on my /f/ drive, will upgrading to 10 not impact stuff on /f/ at all? I'll have Win7 installed for gayman with all except gayman shit quarantined and firewalled, and I will slowly switch to Linux since pretty much every single game that's not a console port these days is released compatible with Linux and MacOS, enough that that the backlog is so large i can't even get to make the time to play most of the shit.

I've already switched to linux though. Playing Yakuza Kiwami right now with no problems. And with wine I've replayed some older games that were completely hopeless on both 7 and 10.

I installed W10 3 nights ago but since it was 32x I uninstalled that shit, besides had a lot of resources-consuming useless features so it lagged a bit on my laptop.
I literally just finished installed W8.1 and looks quite alright, hope it runs alright And doesn't turn out to be my laptop the one who is fucked up.

My macbook is 4 years old and still runs like new. Basically perfect OS. I honestly cant name any flaws with it. Non-forced updates full of new features and free of spyware and botnet. I have experienced literally no downsides compared to daily headaches with wangblows

I use several operating systems at home, win10 LTSB is one of them. I also have win7 and various linux builds. I don't understand limiting yourself to one OS, unless if you're stuck in mac hell. Even then, my iPhone is jailbroken so I just transfer whatever I want on it via SSH/FTP.

There are some ways to prevent W10 from updating. Either by disabling it with group policy or registry editing. Though those options might be limited to Pro and Enterprise versions. Not sure if you can do it in Home versions. Might be more complex.
If you want the updates without things getting completely fucked up then I suppose all you can really do is delay them and hope Microsoft catches any bugs in the interim.

If you've already done away with the Store through other means, you might have avoided it during the rollout, but otherwise any win10 user will have it regardless of permissions.

Security updates are a joke. They don't protect you from the most common means of virus/malware attacks or their damages. Not downloading and not running a "picture" or "movie" called EpicMeme.exe will protect you 100% of the time. The best security is a basic understanding of what not to do.

Besides that, malicious scripts can be bundled into webpages, either intentionally or accidentally, such as within an ad. These scripts will automatically download and run malware without your control. Security updates don't help against that either. UAC (that popup that shows whenever you run a strange program, warning you that it's a strange program) and your browser's own security are your first line of defence against that kind of attack, but neither are infallible.

The aforementioned uMatrix automatically blocks all potentially risky 3rd party web elements from loading (particularly scripts and frames). In 2019, basically every webpage is running dozens to literal thousands of elements from 3rd party sources. Most of them are harmless. The ones that can be harmful are already flagged in dark red by uMatrix. Once everything is safely blocked, you the user can manually choose which 3rd party elements you want to allow, and then refresh the page to load them (since many of them will be essential for the functioning of the website).

See pic related. Most Yea Forums elements are harmless and I choose to allow them through. A year or 2 ago a malicious 3rd party element known for crypto-mining or something else I'm forgetting was added to Yea Forums for around a week and only people with stuff like this even noticed.

Honestly, m8, I just gave Administrators the TrustedInstaller privileges and permissions (since TI is the highest level of permission in win10 and can deny Admins access to craploads of shit) and used that to disable Windows Update, Windows Modules Installer, and (most importantly) Update Orchestrator Service.

Updates are delayed indefinitely with those 3 disabled. I only allowed the most recent to install because I heard update delays are now built-in after the recent crises from Microsoft's lack of testing and because I heard there's a new snipping tool that I am curious to try.

Windows 7 still works for me. I'm not going to bother updating.
There's no W10 exclusive games that I feel I have a interest playing, so there's no push there, either.

you forgot updates, although the latest feature release gives finer grain controls over those, and win10 pro lets you set deferral times (i use business channel and 90 day deferral for feature updates).

The reason startup is so quick is because Win10 fucking ignores checks and disregards its own safety. I've had to reinstall win10 LTSB several times because adding new hardware, or even something as silly as a new monitor or USB hub, breaks it into a million pieces. Safe mode in win10 isn't a thing so there's fuck all you can do.

Of all the things I complain about Win10 for, this will never be one. For me, it's 3 seconds. When I'm asked to reboot my computer, it takes 3 seconds to go from "Confirm" to "Enter login information". I'm on an SSD, but still. I don't think I could go back to Windows as updating everything through pacman is just way too convenient.

The UI doesn't take long to get used to, nor do basic terminal commands, but ignore what others say, you WILL have problems trying to run anything that isn't linux native. WINE and Proton have made some excellent progress but they're far from perfect and require tinkering. Hell, the ideal way to use WINE is by having several different versions installed at the same time because newer versions will have regressions that break some games while fixing others.
As to whether it's worth the trouble, is completely up to you. But it's an uphill struggle. At the very least, I recommend dual booting at first so you have one just werks OS you're familiar with, and then gradually learn linux day by day.

Try Ubuntu. It's by far the most noob friendly linux distro and it's pretty good for the most part.
Expect to spend countless hours googling how to do some things or alternatives to other things are you get used to it though. Unavoidable if you're used to things working a certain way.

Depends on what you are used to.
If you never even touched Linux before, set up a virtual machine and play with few Linux distros in there, so that you get a feeling about how things work.
You can check ProtonDB to see which games work well and you can use Lutris to set up and manage games very easily.

There are numerous other ways to reach it. F8 is just the easiest. Hold the power button until off, turn off, hold the button until off again, etc. until Automatic Repair pops up. You can also enter the Recovery Environment through a variety of means, like an install disk/usb (and RE can boot in safe mode).

Disabled F8 isn't a "problem," it's an "inconvenience."

My Win7 died when I tried to do a clean install because it was originally a prebuilt installed oddly & poorly and because I'm still a brainlet when it comes to computer parts I had a friend help me put together a computer on short notice so he got me Windows 10. Aside from the quick boot time, everything the computer does I find myself just saying "Windows 7 did this better/easier/simpler/looked nicer". It's hard to believe the same company that put out Windows 7 a decade ago could also be responsible for such a stepdown that is Windows 10.

Upgraded when I switched to a M2 SSD for my OS.
No issues so far. The only annoying parts are that Control Panel is split in two in windows 10 and the features which I don't use, but aren't able to be turned off like Onedrive. I'm not autistic enough to switch to something else just because of "spying"

It's disabled because it saves a few seconds on boot time and there are alternate methods of entering boot mode, even during a crisis. It takes about 15 seconds to enter safe mode in an alternate method, while cutting down the boot time by 3 seconds for every boot you'll ever do. Like I said somewhere further up that reply chain, my boot time is only 3 seconds total now, so that cut down the time by 50% in my case.

Whether or not its "worth it" is a different matter of debate.

As someone who works in small business IT and has done work fixing random people's comps, windows 10 as a fresh install is fine especially if you have pro or above. You can turn off most of the spammy stuff pretty easily and use LGPOs for update control.
