From what was shown, only Cavalier and Paladin. I'm pretty sure that it's possible to use any weapon in any class, so long as you train them for it beforehand.

Any class can use almost any weapon, restrictions being spells for magic classes and gauntlet weapons being infantry-only.

Maybe it’s not the best reasoning, but I can’t help but feel Sakurai/Nintendo would place preference over one of the Lords over the other in order to rep and advertise the game, when Byleth very easily strikes the middle ground. FE Shadow Dragon (1)/ Mystery of the Emblem (3), as well as Path of Radiance (9) / Radiant Dawn (10) have true sequels.

Blazing Blade (7) is the prequel to Binding Blade (6).

Genealogy of the Holy War (4) and Thracia 776 (5) are connected to one another. Thracia takes place in the middle of Genealogy.

Fates (14) is more of a "Choose your Path!" with three "different" games. They are: Birthright, Conquest, and Revelations.

Awakening (13) has a lot of references to the original game Shadow Dragon, but not really a sequel.

Gaiden (2)/Echoes (15) take place in the same "world" as FE 1, but the only real connection they have are a trio of sisters showing up as recruitable units.

Play Shadow Dragon or FE3 Book 1 ironman style is my suggestion.
That particular game is designed around the idea of replacing lost units with similar but worse ones, but the game is not that hard(except the higher difficulties on SD), and the characters aren't exactly likely to make you feel guilty for not restarting.
You still have a good reason to not let units get killed(most of the early units are among the best you get) but you can still make it to the end with their weaker counterparts.

You missed the connection between Jugdral and Archanea, but that's about it.

Galle, the founder of the Lopt Empire, met Lopt in Archanea, and brought back magic(only known by dragons at this point) to Jugdral.

Casper seems like shounen protagonist guy, he'll probably be very likeable.

Caspar has high affinity with gauntlets so you could make him a high crit gauntletmaster that attacks 4 times every turn

I'm real glad gauntlets always deal at least 2 hits because treehouse showed a dedue level up and at lv15 he had 5 speed so an armor knight with high gauntlet levels could be pretty broken

I didnt get a good look at which gauntlet dedue used but he killed the enemy at least.
he had 19 strength at lv15 and 23 defense and 46 hp.

They all have different growth rates and preferences so they can be pushed towards a certain class but you can still customize them to an extent. There is also some kind of system in place to make characters specialize in skills they have initially low growths in and turn them into high growths based on their personality and is unique to each unit. Echoes has interchangable "friends" because they are just there for the ride and Alm doesn't really care about them that much. And because Echoes is a fairly faithful adaptation and the support system didn't need them to be fleshed out more than they were. But even then, you can look around Alm's village and see who practiced what weapons to get a feel for what their preferred class was.

In short, you're a brainlet.

In previous games, only the very most important main characters resulted in a Game Over. A handful of characters who are important to the storytelling but not on the level as the protagonists might retreat, becoming forever unusable in gameplay but surviving to participate in dialogue. Common units just die.

Sacred stones. Awakening will at least give you a rough time when you put the difficulty up to lunatic.

If we are talking pre no-permadeath, then 8 is the easiest. Post no-permadeath probably Fates if you use phoenix mode.

Sacred Stones has a lot of fallbacks that mean the player is never really in serious trouble. For a casual player I think 8 has a 100% viable cast, unlike other games where there are definitive bad characters.

has a slow as hell start as a mage or Archer and gets a much bigger return on the Archer line(he's the one villager who can naturally start doubling naturally eventually, and Hunter's Volley is player phase destruction). Cav or Merc Kliff both fix his bad start quite nicely.

Struggles to impress long-term in most classes that is not Merc(Archer is probably his second best combat class if you want to go for it long-term), but has a fantastic start as mage and then transitions into a long-range healer with Physic.

His lack of speed pretty much puts him in the same seat as Tobin, where merc is his best option, but he's bad as a mage. Merc patches up all his statistical weaknesses nicely.
However, he actually makes a surprisingly good Archer. He won't double naturally, but he has the highest damage output of all the villagers with Hunter's Volley, and his supports give him extra hit that actually makes his accuracy better than Tobin's would be at that point in the game.

Cleric with Rescue and all the other utility just shits on anything else, but she does really well in pretty much any class.

Merc or Archer. No other options need apply. Sorta like gray in that Merc solves his statistical weaknesses, but his Hunter's Volley's are even more brutal.
Celica's route is already full of Mercs that can probably fulfill whatever role you'd use Merc Atlas for anyway, so Archer might just be the ticket. Cav is absolutely terrible for him.

If a character is important to the story, they just suffer a wound and become permanently unusable, but otherwise they're technically not dead in the context of the story. If not, they will usually straight up die and are never heard about or mentioned again

The most important offensive spell is Excalibur, which Tobin gets earlier than Kliff, and Tobin also has much better starting speed. Kliff also has no utility magic on par with Physic.

It's called Rokkr Sieges.

Basically it's a raid against one large enemy and you need to do as much damage as possible to it in 7 turns except it takes literally no effort because even on advanced the unit has the strength of a wet noodle and you can amplify your damage by killing the mobs that spawn every turn. Oh and at the end your "group" of other players you are in the sever with arrive and do so much damage you question what the pojnt of your effort was.

For reference here is my Laevaetein using Astra on the Rokkr. They have 200,000 health so it's really not all that difficult to kill them.

As for story updates don't hold your breath. The main banners for summoning only come once a month a now so they can be tied to Forging Bonds and then you get some stupid seasonal banner no one asked for or wanted which Tempest Trials are stuck to now. We haven't had any plot in TT since the one with the Sharena, Fjorm and Eir. Also expect it to slow down now because we're in summer so seasonal banners only for the next 3 months.
