Showing Seph like that in Midgar totally ruins the exposition flow. Originally, we see Sep model for the first time in the Kalm flashback.
Other than that, he is mentioned a few times, and Cloud seems to know him, but that's it.
This already tells you that it's not just a gameplay change, it won't be the same story at all.

It’s basically immediately after. It was jarring in the origin so I’d love to see how much more jarring it is in high definition with modern graphics. All that goofy stuff played well because of the LEGO-Esau’s character models in the original. Square Enix has been much more reluctant to put weird/goofy shit in later FF games after improving the graphics, and I’d argue that the later games all have much less personality as a result.

There's also that part where Cait Sith "sacrifices" himself to get the black materia, and he monologues for the party to not forget that version of him. So either the cat has its own conscience and thoughts, or Reeve was getting into it a bit too much.

It would definitely work. It just depends if square are willing to go for it, and based on the last two decades of FF games I’d say they’re not (although FF14 has some hilariously ridiculous cutscenes in it).

It really felt to me like some other worldly horror that the characters in the story were not capable of understanding. Pardon the cliche but it really creates a “lovecraftian” atmosphere around the whole thing for me.

I’m quite worried the remake will ruin that aspect by (poorly) expanding upon sephiroth’s backstory to make it more understandable.

I have a big problem with character ages in video games. For some reason devs seem to think that all characters need to be overly young in order for kids to relate with the. This is especially noticeable in older games (like FF4-7) where the presentation is abstract enough that players have to make their own assumptions about a character. For example, when I played FF7 back in the day I assumed that Cid was a middle aged cockney guy with a beer-gut based on his in-game portrayal, but then Advent Children came out and portrayed him as a lanky teenager. Same feeling when I looked up the characters from FF6 online and found out that Terra and Celes are supposed to be like 18 years old, whereas I had assumed they were mid twenties and around thirty respectively.

For me, I find it so much less interesting to repeatedly watch a bunch of teenagers or early twenty somethings go about saving the world than it otherwise would be to watch a group of people from varying age groups work together. This is a particularly big problem in Japanese games but it also happens in Western games like Des Ex. JC Denton being 22 years old just makes so little sense to me from a narrative perspective.

I'm only 24 years old but I'd much rather play as a forty-something year old man with some actual life experience than a 20 year old who has barely become an adult yet.

As a literal professional JA-EN translator I just want to point out that you have no idea what you’re fucking talking about. Of course “let’s mosey” wasn’t in the original Japanese script because it was in fucking Japanese. He probably said something absolutely generic like 「行くぞ」because Japanese is the most bland and soulless language ever when it comes to character voice and simply uses yakuwarigo (role language) to characterise absolute everyone. That doesn’t mean it would be a mistranslation for the translator to choose “let’s mosey” over “let’s go” if that was a better representation of their interpretation of Clouds character.

If anything older game translations like FF7 were much better because they actually wrote scripts with some personality to the characters rather than just doing hyper literal direct translations despite the fact that characterisation strategies are completely different between Japanese and English.

You can post disapproving reaction images all you want but I was actually very pleasantly surprised by how great the game was after everyone hyped it up to be so shit. I personally found the gameplay to be much more enjoyable than modern TPS games like Uncharted, and the story did a really good job of fleshing out Vincent’s character and backstory. I also really liked all of the new characters they introduced like Shalua and Shelke and the deepground bosses, and I hope that Shelke will show up if they make any more FF7 sequels in the future. The story also answered some questions I had about what happened to Shinra after the events of FF7.

Honestly the only thing I didn’t really like was the twist about Hojo uploading his consciousness into some kind of cyber-brain, and only because it was never foreshadowed in FF7 at all. If they added an optional document in the remake that implied that he was working on the technology to upload his consciousness to a computer network then I’d honestly be fine with that whole plot point.

Overall I think the game is a much more worthwhile addition to the series than advent children, although advent children does add a tiny bit of interesting new lore. The only EU thing I don’t really like is that OVA depicting Zack and Sephiroths origin given that it was completely inconsistent with both FF7 and Crisis Core.

Most of the compilation is actually shit and detracts from the original. I will agree that Crisis Core is real good though. It has fucking problems, like limit breaks occurring at literal random times, Gackt, characters actually flying around on one wing instead of letting it be some weird allusion, and heavily recycled maps. I'd be legitimately happy to play it again though. I'd cough up the $20 or whatever to play an HD remaster. It emulates fairly well but a lot of the "in engine" scenes were actually prerendered so they're stuck at that resolution.

Yeah master’s at a Japanese uni. Course was mostly taught in Japanese but one of the teachers was a white guy and his classes were in English. It’s a translation and interpreting course anyway so for most classes they let you write essays in English or Japanese depending on your preference. I just did a side by side comparison of the e3 trailers and everyone's lines are basically the same except for Barret who gets almost completely different lines every time. I actually like what they did with the English version of him though because it does a good job of characterizing him and it doesn't bring any significant change to the implications of his dialogue despite the fact that the actual lines hes saying are different.

I remember that the Ultimania had various early concepts shown, one of which was that Reeve was an "inspire" or something like that, a unique type of human who could breathe life into man-made things.

This was never mentioned in-game, and may indeed have been left on the scrap pile along with a lot of other pre-development concepts but it's the only way I can make sense of that temple scene (the cat legitimately fully came to life just before sacrificing itself) and how Reeve was still controlling Cait Sith when he was detained.

The rest of game is laughibly easy if you get to the temple of the ancients with aeris with all her limits, 1500hp and trine and beta and the healing e skills, takes a lot of grinding though.

It was a fucking sequel after a 2-years timeskip. To be fair cramming everything into a movie and having game devs who are used to long-lasting stories direct and create and write a 2 or so hours long movie was certainly a mistake. But Cloud "being an emo" by itself was not it. It did felt annoying because it made it feel like the character development of Cloud from the game was overwritten by feelings of guilt, but him being emo in of itself wasn't the problem. The problem was that you could clearly see that Nojima was struggling at compressing the script without having it feel rushed. Unfortunately habbits die hard. Fortunately ACC fixed several of AC's flaws to some extent.

XV was multiplat with xbone in the first place, wouldn't be surprised if Sony shelled out a lot of money for VIIR

Seriously, people need to be more skeptical about translations. They lead to non-sensical contradictions like "game development speed will not change for upcoming remake parts" vs "from part 2 onwards we'll be able to work more efficiently".
Also nuance issues like in Crisis Core "you are my living legacy" vs "you are the proof that I existed", the former implying that the focus is stuff like "SOLDIER honor" and such, while the latter indicates that Cloud's memories of Zack are most important, which ironically get lost (or at least temporarily "buried") after Cloud arrives in Midgar.

As a huge FFVII fan I agree the crossdressing sequence should remain and be faithfull to the original, but it's not like this was some huge a defining factor of the game that if removed would ruin it.

but that was a big charm of old jrpg. the world crafting based on anime/manga imagination with gags and humors that can be allowed to be only in the world like that. plus, it feels more like an adventure game, you have to read enormous texts composed in text windows from the looking down view in order to slowly digest the story. the games feels more not interactive movies but novels or comics. the only one JRPG series that keep doing this tradition is Persona.

Actually now that I think about it the translation NEVER actually refers to beginning of movie Cloud, but might actually refer to Cloud late into the movie. Remember Cloud was never an "upbeat" person in the first place. That'd be Zack. Cloud had been either an asshole, a somewhat serious but also dorky hero, a mental patient, or a guy who just successfully went through rehibilitation in the original game. And none of these were him being "upbeat". In this case the "solemn Cloud" would be the Cloud from Disc 1, i.e. "somewhat serious but also dorky hero". He wasn't refering to depressed Cloud since that's something entirely new.
