Obviously Banjo is one of the best additions ever, and the trailer being derivative of K. Rool's is funny, but IS derivative so I can't love the trailer as much as I love the addition. The Inkling trailer ranks highly just for the pure shock value of a Smash trailer being dropped in a March direct.

You could literally just remove DeDeDe laughing and leave the trailer as is and it would feel like it's marketing a new Donkey Kong game.

KRool's and Banjo's are godly if just because they both came in after everybody assumed Smash already blew their load(with Simon/Richter+Chrom/Dark Samus, and then leading E3 with the DQ dudes) and then boom. It helps that they're both functional revivals for characters long dormant, KRool last seen in a sports spinoff and Banjo now a third party character MIA since the N64(and with only Nuts and Bolts to their name after the fact).

But in terms of actual quality, I got to hand it to the Belmonts.

Everybody honestly had really good trailers, outside of Inkling who tragically got shafted to be the "Smash 5 announcement" and Ridley who got stapled to the tail end of the Ultimate reveal and just got that short cinematic before gameplay footage.
I genuinely feel like Inkling should've gotten a big cinematic trailer.

As far as cinematography goes it is great. Dynamic angles, action is focused without being hard to read, perfect use of slowdown, etc.

Nobody will ever top Sonic or Snake's reveal.

Cinematography is sadly underrated and underappreciated in places like this especially towards trailers. This is the same era that never experienced great music videos.

Have to admit, Banjo was one of the reasons I immediately thought the leak was fake.

I think the Belmonts and Hero had the best trailers.
They were long, cinematic, and had actual surprises when they revealed the other out of nowhere. They follow roughly the same format.

Ken and Incineroar were cool too, as was Rool, though not as good as Belmot and Hero. Short but humorous, and there was a lot of perosnailty and energy.

Ridley is after that, honestly wasnt too amazing but it had the novelty of having Mario get killed. Banjo was just a straight retread of Rools trailer.

Joker sucked, Piranha Plant didnt even have cinematics, Isabelle while it may be accurate, was way too long and boring, Inklings was cool for a announcement of the game but not really a good trailer.

Grinch bullshit aside, neither of those characters were particularly interesting and for them to be the last characters announced until the DLC, it just felt extremely underwhelming compared to a lot of the other reveals. Hero's has this fucking awesome fight from Link vs Marth and Meta Knight, the format is derivative from the belmonts though, and it doesnt represent the series as well.

Banjo's is also derivative, but the duckhunt comparison plus the little reference were cute.

Ken and Cat is ok, its well shot but not really interesting in any way (the last shot of the others wanting to next was nice)

Plant is only good because all the stunned characters represent well what everyone felt about it, wether positively or negatively.

Inkling was just a short teaser, the clever way they tried to make it look like it was a splatoon trailer was lost due to bad formating on the direct though.

Personally i just didnt find the fight engaging, its not bad, Incineroar in the dark with his eyes glowing looks cool and the little mac vs ken was ok but i just didnt feel it.

Hell after cutting to black they could have showed all the company credits/logos like they always do at the end of each trailer to really fuck with the viewers and then proceed with the reveal

All things considered I genuinely think Inciniroar and Corrin are both very, very bad picks for Smash.

They were put in on the strict basis of advertising their games and nothing more. Corrin has become a completely irrelevant character outside of Smash because there is a new FE coming and there is far more older and popular Pokemon to choose from other than fucking Inciniroar because just like Corrin he has become irrelevant with the new gen coming in.

Someone might say that Joker, Banjo, The Hero and a few other characters like Young Link are irrelevant too but in those cases they are more of representing their current or previous iterations of their franchises, The Hero even has other DQ Heroes as skins.

In Banjo's case, I can't really justify the character in and of itself without going into Rare and Microsoft as a whole so I'll basically say that Banjo is a representation of Nintendo and Microsoft working together.

Young Link is the first character we play as in Ocarina of Time, which happens to be THE definitive 3D LoZ game to date.

Every other character is unique and has a very good justifiable reason to be in the cast.

Cloud? Literally the most popular Final Fantasy protag and recognized world-wide even after almost a decade long shill campaign from Square to get Lightning as the face of the franchise.
Snake? While his franchise is frankly dead at this point it's impression on story-telling in video games and the fact that MGS is literally the reason why the Stealth genre became a thing is warrant enough for him to be there.

I could go on but the exception is Inciniroar and Corrin. Both of these characters are completely irrelevant in almost every way. They are not as popular as Marth or Ike and they're only showcased in a singular iteration of a long franchise. Pair Robin with them too because I legit forgot he even existed.

And it's because of that, that I'll never find them fun or intriguing. It's a shameless advert in an otherwise great game.

This may shock you but I have a life outside of Yea Forums, both of those characters are hated by the fanbase at large, not just here.

It's not like they can do market research or whatever since they pick Pokemon from new gens before the gen even releases. And there's nothing wrong with it. I'd rather new gens get represented in Smash games so there can be a nice balance of old and new Pokemon in the roster. Otherwise we'd just get Gen 1 Pokemon + Lucario.

Ridleyfag here but the trailer was not great. I knew it was Ridley from the moment that Samus stepped on the scene. Also I am so triggered they used the Brawl remix instead of the new Ridley remix which is way better. Almost like when Robin was revealed in 4 and they used the Melee melody instead of that new remix then :/.

Except for when the "new gen" suddenly becomes the "old gen" when the next one comes out and then suddenly your one and only reason for having him on there is gone and now he just looks awkward and feels weird having him there because it's past it's prime.

Again, you could have literally used any of the more popular starter Pokemons from previous gens, Legendaries even or just very frequently used and popular Pokemon like Zoroark. There are literally hundreds of Pokemon and instead of using one that has shown to be relevant across time and different generations they instead picked the most popular starter from the most recent game and just hoped that it would stick to being popular, which it fucking didn't.

At least Greninja was picked up after a solid year of XY being released and the fanbase had shown very positive reinforcements on it. They literally pulled Inciniroar into the roster out of sheer force of shilling for Sun and Moon instead of using more popular Pokemon from even that same gen like one of the Lycan forms or UB's which would have definitely been more unique.

I wanted Chrom and I don’t even like Fire Emblem. I wanted him since I thought it would be funny after his 4 trailer cameo and to trigger rosterfags.

IV is my favorite game but dude, Nocturne is the one with the mass appeal. Not only does it have staying power as one of the most respected RPGs ever, DemiFiend himself is a really iconic and recognizable design; moreso than of the other protags except space marine. IV sold as much as it did in large part due to the influence of Nocturne. And besides, console borders clearly don't matter now that Joker is in.

It's simple, Gamefreak have more money than they normally know what to do with, and can throw their weight around much more than Monolith Soft. It's not like they're going to put that money towards their actual games, after all. Might as well use it to force some advertising.

Because Smash Bros can help bring obscure characters into people's attention. Characters like Ness or Captain Falcon have become iconic solely based on their Smash representation. Doesn't matter if those people haven't played XC1, it doesn't stop Shulk from being much more iconic than Rex will ever be.

Simon Belmont had the best trailer for certain. It was long, it was interesting, it had a really nice crossover gag with Luigi.

I want to say Belmonts because, despite being spoiled that we were getting a Castlevania character, the whole trailer hyped them up really well. The fact it managed to pull that is a testament to it's quality.
Joker blew me away, but his trailer is actually kind of underwhelming when you think of what it actually was.
Banjo's like Joker in that the trailer is mostly propped up by the character choice.

Isabelle's was nice and stylized but the character itself is definitely a big part of the trailer. I don't care for the pooch all that much due to her playstyle so I dock it.
Roughly the same reason why I wasn't crazy about The Hero, but that's just because his trailer felt like a generic "THE HERO ENTERS" bit pulled by MegaMan already with Sm4sh. If you swapped out The Hero with Doomguy nothing would change with the plot or context of the trailer.

Everything else is pretty even for me.

Mega Man's trailer was him beating up Smash veterans, though. Hero's trailer is directly tied to the story in Smash.
