First, Silver 3 was never "the majority." Pic related, old distribution on the left. In the old system, 0.1% of players were Silver 3.

Secondly, phrasing the change as an "artificial rebalancing" is retarded because the initial balance was also arbitrary. It wasn't any more natural than the current iteration of the ranking system because Valve was always setting the rules from which your rank was derived.

That's objectively true. If you can't tell from comparing the graphs, Silver comprised only 3% of the playerbase. If you're better than the worst 3%, then you would be at least Gold.

Now, about 30% of the playerbase is Silver, so you have to now be better than the bottom 30%.

They bothered because they were eventually forced to. Some dumbass blogger who owned one of the gambling sites let his greed get the best of him and rigged the site so that he would win every coinflip no matter what the coded outcome would be. Then he tried to do some damage control on YouTube and only made things worse once he was caught lying about the whole thing, which only brought more attention to the legitimacy of the sites in general, until eventually the government was being urged to step in. Valve wasn't about to let their reputation go to shit over a literal investigation from the feds so they pulled the plug on the entire operation and threatened every site owner to shut down or they be sued.

I'm pretty sure if things had been different, Valve wouldn't have gave as much of a shot back then, but of course, one idiot moron had to ruin it for the rest of the community
