If you had played any game before 2018 newfaggot you would know. Just compare it to a screenshot from the GC era.

/fa/ calls it pale wave.
Pic related, washed out done right.

Can't you just change the saturation on your TV?

that's Soul

Can we cut the BS and be real? Like we all played the game. We all know it looks great in lighting moments where shit's dark or the sun is cresting or the area is lit by local lighting, and we all know the game looks like foggy pea soup in daylight.

that pic is embarassing

it doesnt feel like they are deliberately going for this style though. it feels more like just bad taste, poor direction or limitations

trannypallete, because i don't like it

The entire image is washed out

i like botw's art style
the rest are just garbage tho

is this a joke post? that looks like dogshit

>user doesn't know fog
Leave the house

ONE OF THESE THINGS IS NOT LIKE THE OTHERS, ONE OF THESE THINGS IS SHIT

Maybe AC can pass for a pastel look, but no, this doesnt apply to the others. BotW certainly does not look "pastel". You are giving way too much credit. It simply looks washed out

Other companies do this too though. Why is it only a problem when Nintendo does it?

Attached: 27AB3AB3-CA56-49BB-A7C4-F49009E47C4F.jpg (1024x576, 108K)

Nintendo honestly just sucks when it comes to daytime lighting. They haven’t figured out how to make it look good.

Haze? Developers do it to cut down the amount of detail that needs to be processed, it's been around since the PS2 era.

It may feel that way to you, but that doesn't make it correct. There is NO way that they didn't deliberately go for a pastel style. Pastel is in. It's what's big right now and Nintendo knows it.

Fixed it for you bro, this is what it should look like

Attached: botw.png (960x540, 542K)

That's a problem with the Switch though a lot of people pretend otherewise. The proof is that the Zelda BOTW has higher contrast on the WiiU.

because it's not okay when Nintendo does it

It doesn’t even look like a pastel style. The black mirror episode Nosedive is pastel style. These games just look shorty and washed out

REEEEEEEEalism.

When will the pastel meme die? I miss when games and anime had bright, neon colors like back in the 90's.

Here you go bro, I made it washed out.

It's called "we need to build every game around the handheld mode".

>watching black mirror

>RDR2
>"washed out"
It's fucking beautiful you stupid dunce. Post a screenshot that doesn't contain fog next time.

Having to make games for a weak happy meal tablet.

The switch's settings menu has an option for color output. It's set to automatic by default, which is supposed to limit the color range for older screens and use the full range for newer screens. What ends up happening is everything gets set to limited so you have to manually change it to full. Everyone who doesn't change the settings themselves end up complaining about how the colors look muted or washed out. Even the people in charge of recording nintendo's promotional footage fuck this step up all the time.

Attached: color.png (932x513, 753K)

The switch is great why are you such a butt hurt nigger?

>play on cemu
>disable fog
>game suddenly looks way better

The fuck nintendo?

Here you go bro, I made it washed out.

Yeah, no

Attached: F195DDF7-AD32-486F-B9B3-DACA5F2F7B41.jpg (1920x1080, 193K)

They could have made the game look this beautiful just by increasing saturation. Nintendo should be embarassed and beg Sony and Microsoft to buy it out and teach them how to make games.

Wow its so grey and brown really looks next gen game now, every normie will love it.

that’s not it, but full color does make it a bit better

Agreed, GC AC has soul up the ass.

I obviously wouldn't make the whole game look like this but it honestly would have been neat to make one region like it.
BotW was in serious need of a spookier area, outside of the tropical region the biomes were pretty boring.

It's called "not maxing out the saturation"

Attached: 1536438766919.jpg (2091x2145, 1.19M)

that's just how things in the distance look. for the same reason that white light entering the atmosphere shifts blue, light coming from far-off mountains scatters to blue.

Attached: Sierra_Nevada_aerial.jpg (2808x1627, 3.06M)

Hey bros, here you go. I got you!

Attached: Untitled-1.jpg (960x540, 421K)

BOTW looks washed out on the Wii U too though.

Do you actually expect zoomer newfag fucks that were born 12 years ago to know what pastels are? They're too busy eating them rather than learning what they are.

Looks good to me.

Attached: botw.jpg (2560x1440, 900K)

The difference is that your photo covers a range of many kilometres whereas in BOTW it happens after ten metres.

Thought I was the only one who felt this way. If i wanted shitty realism, I'd go outside.

They both look pretty weak honestly.
Pokemon has never excelled in aesthetic, even compared to its peers on the same hardware.

I use a properly calibrated monitor and even with this option, the colors still look a lot more washed than my PC games. It's probably just a bad artistic choice from Nintendo.

>Being so retarded you can't figure out that BOTW can't be the same size as real life

both are bad examples of color usage

yeah, and in BOTW the map is too small to see any real scattering. by exaggering the distance, it makes it look to our puny monkey brains like the space is bigger than it is. Maybe the effect should be turned down a little, but Nintendo did it for all the right reasons. See , it looks like shit.

But that's not what I said. I said the effect happens in BOTW over a much shorter distance, which is the problem.

Attached: Untitled-1.jpg (960x540, 215K)

I see what you're referring to for the other 3 but Spiral Mountain...no.

>he compares photography inaccuracies to how real life looks

Nintendo astigmatism

crushed blacks, yikes

yeah, let’s use the terrible colors in that pic to justify the grass looking like washed out fluorescent green in BotW and the lack of any non-artificially dark areas or dark shadows

The only reason that image looks bad is because the trees are overly bright and there's a lack of grass due to poor draw distance. It's otherwise a complete and total upgrade to the default look.

nu-tendo

Attached: Super-Mario-64-Screenshots.jpg (1520x764, 355K)

You put "pastel" in quotation marks, but I don't think you really understand what it means

Pastel just means is any colour scheme that emulates low saturation, dry-pigment look of pastels.

In this pic it ain't bad but in some areas you could be on top of grass and it looks like a grayish green

fixed

Attached: Untitled-1.jpg (2560x1440, 1.4M)

looks super washed out

Attached: 5AF7A672-999D-46EB-B404-97398AB5F53A.jpg (1596x506, 291K)

that's not an artifact of photography, it's how it looks to your eyeballs. try going outside sometime.

just put your saturation up

Every console game looks washed out to me. I think it's the texture filtering. I'm used to having 16x on my PC while consoles barely get 4x, Switch oftentimes only bilinear filtering.

Serfrost's Clarity preset in Cemu actually fixes the washed out look that Nintendo has been going for lately.

Nintendo probably tested, inside use and outside portability use for switch, with the white taint acting like a higher gamma setting helping against sunlight. It was the Switch starting title after all.

Here's a site where you can slide it back and forth between the two.

this is what Nintendo games look like to me these days, they’re doing some weird shit with colors

looks bad, we need more colors, but no crushed blacks and white distance fog in very distant objects

at least N&B shit isn't in Banjo's moveset

because it isn't neon green?

Your taste sucks and I bet your room is a fucking mess

Nintendoodoo

>that clearly hazy, pixely look of everything in the distance is how it looks to your eyeballs
>"try going outside"
oh the fucking irony, get your eyes checked while you are at it

You’re 100% right but brainlets will never understand

original looks better

NINTENDO

there’s a max value

but it also looked washed out back in 2014 when it was shown on the Wii U as a Wii U only game. The corrections shown in those boxes are perfect though, wish it looked like that by default

Yes, it's going to happen over a shorter distance because the game world is naturally shorter due to gameplay constraints.

looks comfy desu

The other games are definitely washed out but this is just them making it marginally more realistic.
I would have preferred an upgraded version of the left though, right feels like something out of Brawl.

XD BASED!

But I thought it was the same size as real life.

Your opinion

It's used to hide bad graphics in the distance.

Not sure how I feel about how it affects Link but the environment is way better.

Now it just looks like skyward sword threw up on it.

I mean 1.0 BOTW Handheld mode ran much better than docked until that 50 mb update to fix that issue.
Hell the lastest update overclocks the Switch to cut load times to 6 seconds instead of 10-15

that’s because Brawl looked super washed out, U looked perfect, then they fucked up with Ultimate again

Wrong.

3D World and by consequence Treasure Tracker was the last Nintendo first party game to not have the washed out look, it looked incredible

Attached: BE1961F6-9571-4441-9875-D724C40909E8.jpg (739x415, 48K)

No it doesnt dumbass. Pastel is a deliberate style, not just low saturation

looks a million times better, now it just needs smoother textures to replace the Unity engine placeholder textures they seem to be using

Nigger you wouldn't know washed out if it bit you in the pecker you haven't washed out in months.

Modern Nintendo games dont look like pastel you fucking dipshit. Stop defending Nintendo's shitty color choices by pretending they are pastel

Here it is on PS3

Attached: Untitled-1.jpg (1200x480, 285K)

God i fucking hate this meme phong shading.
it looks like fucking dogshit.

Ok now what

Stop eating the pastels you retard.

Skyward sword did this aesthetic better on the Fucking wii

>it's too cartoony!
>it's too realistic!
>it's too !
>i can't believe nintendo switched their entire art style to a boring non offensive clean look why would they do something so uninspired?!?!
probably cause you're a bunch of stupid faggots who shouldn't be allowed to have money and make purchases you industry ruining fucks.

Attached: 1525173953547.jpg (640x650, 347K)

It's called having a shit system so you have to reduce the color depth to achieve an acceptable framerate on your underpowered system.

Jeez this looks horrendous.
Nintendofags really praise this garbage?

Have you guys never been outside? This is what color grass actually is

Attached: 927189640679ffd0a4637c4beadbb538.jpg (1280x720, 204K)

Epic new meme spotted! Surely this will catch on, calling everything washed out!

crushed black and washed out green still, it only lost the fog

Attached: Untitled-1.jpg (739x409, 323K)

I dont understand what color has to do with framerate. Couldnt they just adjust the color values if they wanted to?

if color depth had anything to do with framerate, HDR on and off would affect fps in games (hint: it doesn’t)

The DP screenshots had extra saturation added on. The Pokemon Centers never looked this bright.

Attached: pc.jpg (113x121, 4K)

Attached: botw.jpg (2560x1440, 1.37M)

will Ubisoft copy the washed out look as well?

Attached: qfhehvfno59vndazljhq.jpg (1600x900, 357K)

its a hardware problem

Attached: maxresdefault.jpg (1280x720, 142K)

better colors, though a bit overblown

it has nothing to do with framerate

colors look a lot better here, the green is much smoother and the white fog only starts way in the distance, unlike BotW.

>not posting PC

Yeah it looks way better, left is a disgusting eyesore.
Just because you're an old stinky boomer and see things clearly unless they're ultra saturated and bright doesn't mean that that's a nice aesthetic.

that’s just a low shadow level problem not related to colors

their best coloration was in n64 days

Attached: 1546832729202.jpg (1024x800, 330K)

You're crushing your blacks fool

This looks washed out and a lot of the people replying to you are dumb. Healthy grass is not supposed to look that light or sallow

so crushing blacks is the new phrase retards on this board are going to repeat ad nauseam?

that was back when Nintendoo wasn't afraid of making dark and threatening environments

I've noticed it, too.

Attached: Untitled.png (1291x480, 669K)

Crushed blacks looks better and make things look like pop art. It's way better than low contrast blacks. That said, crushed blacks aren't inherently a bad thing.

Attached: latest[1].jpg (1920x1200, 850K)

this thread is making my eyes hurt

>BOTW looks washed out on the Wii U too though

The Wii U can ONLY do limited range. It looks more vibrant on Switch on full range. And honestly, this 'complaint' is desperate as fuck anyway.

Attached: 1537176985016m.jpg (1024x576, 70K)

Is there a way to do this on a modded Wii U?

Attached: Water.jpg (800x600, 76K)

Fuck off. Modern Nintendo games look bland as hell. Im so tired of the whitish tint on all their games

yes, though your pic doesn’t show it

this 2bh

you sound like an absolute idiot

nah cuz, modern nintendo games are like 50% white pixels

You must prefer the way modern Pokémon anime looks, with all its radioactive flora

Attached: a9JOXQNO_o.jpg (1280x720, 145K)

That image isn't supposed to be showing it looking good, right? That image is everything wrong with BOTW's visuals.

Attached: Untitled-1.jpg (1024x800, 516K)

exactly, healthy grass looks darker than that, no matter if it’s early morning or afternoon

Attached: AB2B1730-616F-40B0-A7F2-D291F3AC360B.jpg (600x400, 52K)

Attached: 1559175571802.jpg (680x408, 46K)

Zelda: Superman 64 edition

>the whitish tint
That's Nintendo being incapable of making good use of dynamic lighting. Maybe they'll get there next gen.

What is top left?

it’s a real problem that happens when you go the opposite direction of washed out colors.

Are retards really saying RDR2 is “washed out”?

I genuinely don't understand what makes a human being defend corporations for free online. Just fucking scroll past if you're not gonna discuss something.
Can someone explain the reasoning? How did brand loyalty become a thing?

i know what you're doing but it's not funny. you're just stupid.

It depends on your intention. If the intention is to show the iridescence of the pigeon feathers, the right one is the best.

No shit. But the only one that's OBJECTIVELY bad is the far left one. Using crushed blacks is an art style choice. In some things it looks good and some things it looks bad.

Where did you get that definition from?

how did you come to this conclusion? BotW had way bigger flaws in my opinion.

All you have to do to get rid of the white shine in ultimate is turn the brightness down to 25

The KINO art style.

>muh generalizations
>everyone is a monolith!
Wow you're retarded.

they’re the worst thing because it’s the only problem that’s common to all Nintendo games, cause everything else is different otherwise, like difficulty, dlc strategy, content etc.

Want to hear something that Nintendo is doing wrong? Sell the Mario Maker 2 by fucking $60 and then put the entire game behind a paywall...

right is objectively bad too, it may look nice at first glance, but you lose too much detail in order to highlight some parts of the image

Attached: csm_Lempertz-1008-69-Paintings-15th--19th-Century-Heinrich-Deiters-VAST-LANDSCAPE-WITH-LAKE-_ea538e7 (2560x941, 274K)

Sorry mate I live in Aus the grass is always brown here.

I agree with the other 3 but Animal crossing is not true. You just picked a moment during the exact time of the day where colors would look like that.

I prefer pink with CRUSHED BLACKSSS

Attached: Untitled-1.jpg (2048x1152, 1.2M)

i feel like nintendo puts less effort into their textures now. like here they dot the ground with patches of dirt and yellowish grass to give an experience of kind of a dried out field. in their modern games it seems like most surfaces are just one color

Attached: 1292744-link_riding_epona_zelda_ocarina_of_time_screenshot.jpg (397x309, 73K)

that looks like souless bland trash but look at the saturation and use of crushed blacks in my imaged that is true soul

>people complain about one thing therefore nobody ever complains about other things
What's it like being this stupid?

No it's not. I was at the park all day and the grass was emerald green

Jesus christ, you absolute knuckle-dragging ape; sometimes photos looks best when you highlight parts of an image. It entirely depends on your intention. See

>sweetfx.jpg

THe guys in this thread are the same people who had a meltdown over the Spyro Trilogy???

user that's a painting, if you weren't aware.
Maybe he's right about your eyes.

Nintendo could learn a thing or two about color from the guys that did the Spyro Trilogy.

Centipede common here

why the fuck does the image on the left have superior blending of textures?

tell me your specs if you can play the game well

otherwise fuck you shitter

this is more like what grass is supposed to look like

The only reason it looks more vibrant on full range is because your TV is limited range

CRUSHEEDDDD BLACKS ARE BQADDDDDDD

REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

ALL HAIL LOW CONTRAST

LOOK HOW GOOD THIS LOOKS
THISIS OBVIOUSOLY PROOF THAT ALL THINGS SHOULD HAVE LOW CONTRAST AND CONT RAST IS BAD

Attached: Untitled-1.jpg (1920x1227, 879K)

What do you do to achieve it? I'd like my BOTW emulation to look decent as well

Because those flaws are pretty subjective, BotW was kind of divisive.

I agree with that, and I still think it's not a bad thing because their games are generally pretty good. Individually, all games have problems in some form, quite dependent on taste

I agree with you there, NoA seems to not sell the games for different prices dependent on the type of game it is. Here in the UK we have the big budget titles around £50 and mario maker 2 is £40

even with the shader the environment still looks kind of washed out. the color direction of BotW is just total shit

Because it has less polygons and therefor less textures. More focus probably went into blending the textures since there were less of them.

2002+17 the effects of wind waker are still being felt.

It hurts bros when will get old nintendo back back.

looks fine to me

Attached: LoZBotw14.jpg (1280x720, 205K)

Darker tones are all "crushed" to a smaller range of tones, e.g. tones that are off-black will become full black.
It emphasizes shadows and other dark things, but quashes detail. It's good for making things look dramatic or spooky.

Never seen grass like this in real life.

grass over here is brighter and prettier, not ugly

that grass looks American, not Japanese.

Attached: Varieties-of-grass-a-Cocksfoot-b-Italian-ryegrass-c-Meadow-foxtail-d.png (850x309, 603K)

Why are you fags like this? There's no "best" choice. Imagine if every artist chose to go with the same value range, mood and atmosphere at all times, same color gamut, forever.

Attached: D369hAIU0AEAoo0.jpg large.jpg (2048x2048, 397K)

wind waker actually looks quite rich in comparison

This must be some japanese ruse to add this fucking fog to every single switch game.

And here's what BotW looks like with my custom Cemu reshader

looks like a similar color to me

ok but wheres the soul?

Good thing we can make the washed out shit and fog fuck off on cemu

this, Crash and Spyro nailed colors

TVs shouldnt have full color set or you get black crush.

3D world was the most fun game I ever played. What a fucking masterpiece.

SPECS

HOW CAN I MAKE ZELDA LOOK LIKE THIS

How the fuck do you think this look better than vanilla colors, this looks like some awful homemade instagram filter

Its called japanese tvs get calibrated to 2.4 gamma unlike tvs sold on western marked with 2.2 gamma

Why are there no true blacks in Nintendo games now?
Maybe its to make handheld play in sunlight easier to see???

Literally anyone with a 4790k or above can run cemu at 60/1080p.
In my case 1440p/60

Based crossposter, good example
Fit is nothing like the illustration though that's bordering on neofolk and the palette is earth tones.

You dont know what black crush is.

its just modern games in general

Attached: green1.jpg (2553x2857, 2.22M)

you can with modern TVs, it only used to be bad before wide color gamut days

There is no fucking fog in that picture. The white shit near the castle are just puffs. The actual fog in botw is distance fog. Distance can be adjusted or deleted (in this photo its deleted) in cemu

TVs are designed around 16-235 and not 0-255 its why you get black crush, dark shades mush into pitch black and lighter shades mush into bright white when you for instance use a tv with 0-255 on a PC.

It's called not setting up your display's contrast high enough.

Really though a fuckton of PC games do it too and it boggles my mind, I almost always run ReShade with vibrance and contrast boosts.

Attached: 78e2e8b52ebdfe8f885d1a1265570bca.jpg (1015x1159, 364K)

My ks8000 couldnt use 0-255 with my PC I had to use 16-235 (236?) otherwise dark scenes became unwatchable.

Dirk souls 1 is also much darker than the rest of the fromshit. I never touched gamma in ds1 but had to set it to 2 in bloodborne and ds3.

foliage looks pretty, but what's up with link?

>Pastel is a deliberate style
Do you just say things with zero understanding? Where does this inflated sense of confidence come from?

Skyrim started this trend

fucking your mom

Contrast on a monitor shouldnt be touched you fuckwad. On a TV rarely ever either. Go learn some calibration and do some research.

I plunked down my Marth amiibo.

>screenshots look washed out no matter where you look at them
>”it’s your monitor!”

I should give it a try

you have to set both your tv and pc to full rgb range, I dont think it doesnt support full rgb. My mid range sony from 2012 has full rgb and it was cheaper than ks8000

The early Xbox 360 era?

This right image has a problem that I see in many games these days, which is to fill the surroundings with a stacking of generic objects, making the landscape look like a large garbage dump.
See, that shit don't look like rocks, don't look like mountains, they are clearly several 3D objects that the creator spread, rotated and resized because he did not know how to fill the scene.
It's as if a horse was dumping shit on a small model or something...

What appears to be missing not only in Nintendo games but others is the lack of shadows. And the fact that their aesthetics have switched compared to how they designed their games back in the 64 era which had more realism to it.

TV had to be set to limited and the PC 0-255.
Or the TV had to be set to Full and the PC to 16-236

Otherwise dark scenes in films becamse so dark you couldnt see any detail at all, I know interstellar looked horrible.

god I cant wait to purchase this off the epic store and then crack it to let other pc chads play for free
isnt it weird that basednybros only talk about graphics
I thought the point of a console was sacrificing processing power for fun points at a lower cost

you dont touch black levels and contrast (white levels) on tvs at all. They should be set correctly in movie and game mode.
You disable all gimmicks, then set backlight brightness, then sharpness, then gamma and then white balance.

I disagree

eh?

the right image literally only added 1 single tree, everything else appears in the left image

how does a game from 2000 have such richer colors in comparison

Attached: mm12.png (1023x768, 1.09M)

Actually looks awful without the atmospheric haze in the distance.

Zoom and Bloom

Handheld bright. All of Nintendo's handhelds since the GBA had it.

Are you a retard? Pastel absolutely is a deliberate style you dumbass. Its when the colors are balanced to create a pastel look, not just when everyone is desaturated

bpitt

They have in the mystery Dungeon series

>richer colors
>is only dark green and brown mix

HIRE THIS MAN!

What do you think "richer" means in this context?

Because the image you posted actually has a pretty limited range of hues.

As mentioned, it's just there to compensate for the fact that the Switch is a MOTHERFUCKING HANDHELD HALF OF THE TIME.

what is the "pastel look" in your mind?

describe it to us

This looks like total shit. Just because you can play with the game's color settings doesn't mean you should.

Zelda BotW looked washed out on Wii U before Switch was even a prototype though, and all Nintendo handhelds now have backlight which removes the necessity of software color compensation for outdoor environments

the actual problem is that modern nintendo games don't have enough interiors or more enclosed areas.

>4 bright colors and shadows
>richer

mmm

You dont touch sharpness on a TV or a monitor either unless you enjoy fucked up edges and halos around things. Look up how sharpening actually works.

Or get some glasses.

Beautiful, but some parts are "washed out".

The thing that makes people stupid is that it's not bad thing. People still think games should try to be real life and it such a bummer because there are some fun games that end up being such a visual drag becuz >realism

A lot of underage kids here, so it's no surprise people don't simple shit like this

It's the most effective way of hiding inferior hardware and graphical capability

Some tvs come with shrpness set too high actually.

That looks like putrid garbage. Why did you make everything so intense? That isn't how light works. Get some fucking taste you subhuman retard.

>their best coloration was in the vaseline smeared on your tv days
ok retard

Garbage

>it’s supposed to look bad!

wind waker didn’t look washed out before the Wii U remake, BotW looks more like that bloomfest released on Wii U

modern nintendo games dont have that palette though

With just a bit of modding, this is how Breath of the Wild runs on Yuzu. Not Cemu, but Yuzu.

High contrast doesn't mean it looks good.

Have you ever been to the American southwest? Its dry and brown as fuck. If there's one thing RDR2 got right was how bland the southwest is.

the colors on the right just look like the life has been drained out of the environment. its kind of hard for me to explain, but thats what it feels like to me.

pastel

and in the case of AC, it's following "flat" design principles.

>Yeah, no
>posts a picture only further proving the previous poster's point

I don't know what to say m8

HIRE

You realize lighting conditions are a thing, right?
This is like the fucking blue-black dress all over again.

that’s what washed out colors do, you wouldn’t want to explore the are on the right side of the pic cause it has no life.

It doesn't look bad.

Are you aware of impressionism?

I think windwaker and botw look better than most every other zelda game. Because the art style let's them cut corners.

Literally artist direction. What else would it be?

Now I want a Banjo&Kazooie HD remake

teal and orange meme

Wind Waker looks amazing, Wind Waker HD looks bad, BotW looks terrible

In creating a champion they explain how they played with different designs until one sticked to what they were looking for.

There's also the explanation in how they ported twilight princess and wind waker and liked how the cell shaded remake one looked way better in HD with minimal effort, how it holded out better in their opinion than twilight princess

Is Switch the Kyoani of video games?

user, please google "atmospheric perspective"

here come the animeme shitposters

just what this thread lacked

what the fuck is up with the washed out look on the left?

This, holy shit.

Director of Photography for the series is a hack who upped the brightness for the entire series and completely crushed the blacks as a result instead of adjusting filters by scene as it's normally done.

>B&W
>Modern
