It looks like the designers completely missed the point of battletoads. They think it's wacky 80s retro nostalgia meme like toejam and earl when really it's all about being somewhat realistic and disgusting

At least you can still recognise the characters in that one.
Even the more realistic skin for Rash looked cool. The tough, muscly texture of his skin is great.

Making a game that looks like this is completely not possible. You think they would get the budget for these graphics for a fucking side scrolling beat em up? Nobody buys those any more. The best you can hope for in that genre is drawings.

i just generally hate the HD ""sprites"" or celshaded 2D styles they use instead of sprites altogether, it's like the new windjammers, all of the rad 90s aesthetic is totally gone without pixelated sprites. the HD "clean" sprites with rounded outlines just look like flash games i played on newgrounds, it doesn't look better than making new sprites
