So I just beat this, and apparently the post games really long and I'll be honest, I don't know if I have it in me to go through the post game if I don't need to.
Is the post game story necessary? Or is it just filler story that I'd be fine not going through? I'm just getting burnt out at this point but don't want to risk missing big story.

The post game of VIII is one of the best stories in video games. It explains the heroes role in the story, where so far he just seems to be some random guy. It will also give you the equipment the hero has in Smash Bros.

But if you have a 3DS you can play 4-9, 9 is great, 8 is pretty good, i can't say for 4-7 because I haven't played those yet.
You can get pretty good ports of 1-3 on your phone on your app store (or just download an apk file for each) 1 is good, 2 is rough but enjoyable, 3 is the best of the erdrick trilogy

5 for plot with 2d sprites but the game is enhanced if you played 4 before it.

I would suggest not starting with DQIV. Not because it's a bad game (it's one of the best). But because the west got an absolutely horrid translation and content removed. They really need to re-release a fixed version of the game. And no, a bad smartphone port with the same shit dialects is not a fix.
