Yakuza 1 is about Kiryu taking the fall for his sworn brother killing a patriarch. He gets out of jail a decade later and his sworn brother is a different man and the love of his life is missing. In the end you find out that she started a family with a politician out of wedlock and he planned to have her killed once his political career takes off. The Yakuza hide her and her daughter who you meet early in Yakuza 1. After her mother dies at the end she has no one left to take care of her so Kiryu adopts her since she is not only the daughter of the woman he loved but he was also an orphan with an adoptive father. He knows what an impact that having a real parent present can have on someone discarded by society like that.

Yes. I don't care if I spoil an over decade old game series, but Kiryu goes to jail to cover for Nishiki, while his crush has an amnesia and marries a chad who then has a child with her. At the end of the game the chad and Kiryu's crush both die, so Kiryu adopts the now orphan kid

The creators take on the series' tone. I can understand why it doesn't work for some people but I totally agree with him that you can have things like Hot Fuzz or Yakuza that have this weird tonal mix that works.

I have been mocked in the past for not getting emotional during some of "the great" films and tv shows out there. (I'm a little autistic) But Yakuza and anime can make me emotional because the writing is melodramatic and it's always very clear what I should be feeling. The music helps, but mostly I like that the characters all say clearly how they are feeling and what they are thinking. This helps me understand them and I can feel myself getting emotional from the sad parts.

He didn't really get cucked - his romance with the girl was always a non starter because even though he loved her so did his best friend. It was star crossed from the beginning. That's why he took the fall, he was hoping to protect his friend and that he could make her happy. Unfortunately it all fell apart while he was in Gook Prison.

I've only played 0, is it worth playing the others? I enjoyed the humor of the game, the hostess minigame was fun for a bit and the kart racing consumed a bit of my time, but other than that i didn't really enjoy much else. The combat was horrible and in the end i just rushed to finish the game. What yakuza games have actual decent combat?

if you didn't like the combat in 0 you aren't going to like the combat in the rest of the series

Sadly 0 probably has the best combat and many of the mini games are reused in other titles. Only play more if you want to watch another story like 0's (somewhat over the top Japanese crime drama) and play some of the mini games more. Like Kiwami brings back the kart racing though it's largely the same content and Kiwami 2 has a new hostess subplot/mini-game. Kiwami has almost identical combat to 0s, though it's slightly better with style switching being more fluid (you can now unlock certain special ways to switch styles quickly mid fight like during a combo ender) the trade off is there is only one character and every hard fight boils down to abusing Tiger Drop if you don't want to torture yourself. Kiwami 2 hass pretty different combat. No styles and physics play a bigger role. You can send guys flying into each other or store windows and fights can spill into businesses and restaurants. Most of the improvements are technological like that though, the combat itself is still fairly shallow and some people dislike certain aspect of Kiwami 2 like how often enemies insta block or how few heat actions there are.

I guess make your decision about what to play based on all that.
