You can play the game without ever watching Kingsglaive. The movie is more of a prologue to the world and the greater conflict that spurs your characters into action, but the game is primarily about your journey with your friends and how you overcome obstacles and grow with them by your side. The game and its main theme are conveyed perfectly well enough without any of the side material (Brotherhood simply expands upon this, but again isn't necessary).
I'm not arguing that the game is finished, because clearly things were cut, but it accomplishes what it set out to do and has clear bookend moments between the beginning and end that, all in all, make it a satisfying experience.

I suppose that's subjective, but I was intrigued by the way they did character development (through dialogue pertaining to whatever task you were doing instead of cutscene after cutscene).

You literally can you brainlet. In fact the newspaper scene is better -without- the (lazily) spliced-in Kingsglaive scenes that they added post-launch. The characters are in shock and don't know what's happening, even with the existence of the film the player doens't have to be clued in entirely from the get-go. Again, one of the main themes of FFXV is about the journey and development of bonds through hardship. The vanilla game conveys this just well enough for the ending to work.

The problem is the screenspace reflections that are used. Turn those off in the PC version and the water effects themselves are actually nice to look at, it's the low resolution and narrow screenspace reflections that make it looks a million times worse.

It has a lot of soul but is held back by boring sidequests, lacklustre combat, and a story that falls apart near the end.
Make sure to watch the anime before starting and the Kingsglaive movie after the end of the prologue.

I liked walking around the world, hunting monsters, and leveling up my gang until Noctis himself was a perpetually airborne super saiyan zipping across the battlefield poking enemies to death and crashing down with his giant ghost axe. The four protagonists carry the game via their interactions while actually in game. The butchered story ruins it, the poor scene direction is surprisingly bad when FF has a history of being at least decent in this apartment, and the main quest outside of just fucking around and hunting is poorly designed. Final Fantasy needs focus and direction and XV was just a giant sprawl. But I still really enjoyed it.
