I'm playing Secret of Mana for the first time with this new collection on switch. Are there any tips for not getting absolutely butt fucked by stunlock? In some situations it feels like if it get hit once it's essentially an auto death because I can't move afterwards.

I couldn't get passed the localization of this game. Namely the guy with beanie and how they decided to give him ghetto accent/slang but it was obviously translated by people who have no idea how people from actual urban shitholes speak.

What is with Square Enix and accents? I dropped DQIV for the same reason because they localized some of the language with thick Irish, or Scottish accents.

Im giving JRPGs a break now, the last ones I tried left me disapointed. It is related to how I lost interest in anime, japanese media was new and exciting at first but after some years it feels like its always repeating the same tropes.
Cold Steel 2, Tales of Berseria and Persona 5 were the last ones I droped, even though I enjoyed the earlier installments and even consider some of them the best games I ever played.

I heard really good things about the game, saw waifus, and a beautiful looking world, bought it and tried it myself but found the battle system unengaging and slightly overwhelming, dropped it a few hours in, heard it gets better after the beginning...it wasnt.

I guess, it's just backlog mentality and trying to force myself to complete a long ass game that I don't enjoy, turning into a job. If the game is still worth anything, I'll try trading it in.

The game's combat system does start really tedious at start. Not telling you to start for the fourth time but atleast that aspect does get better.

I've never understood this sentiment that the combat is hard to get into. Maybe it's because I played a lot of 1 and X before this game came out, but is it really that hard to charge your arts, use them for healing or a cc chain and then use specials to apply effects in the order that the elemental chart depicts? The game even shows you onscreen what elemental chains you can get off of your first special.

Xbc2 was my first xb, I feel like a brainlet for having trouble with it at first because I wasn't used to auto attack and I found the battle tutorials short and it doesn't give you the option to refer back to them like every other jrpg, just once then you're on your own, fuck you if you screwed up the tutorial during a boss fight.

I only figured it all out once I found a brief guide online explaining the hud and mechanics again and I still didn't like it.

I'm guessing if you already played the first 2 before it, the battle system must've felt like riding a bike.

Legend of Dragoon, it's whole mechanic is a mini QTE while landing your attack but it isn't bad. The story is about getting your friend back from a prison and there's insect dragons. At least that's how far I have made it to.

Blood Omen is kind of a hack and slash. You can turn into a wolf and massacre people and townsfolk, I think. I haven't went back to it but that's on me, not the game.

Xeno Gears. Classic Jrpg. I haven't gotten far in it but it's fun from what I've played.

Also, RE2 Remake is really good. It doesn't fit your qualifications but besides the damn dogs, it's fun.

I guess I can see how that happens when you got a cast as good as the one from the Sky trilogy. To be fair though if I compare it to most other JRPGs it'll still win over them in that regard.

And since user mentioned YS8 which I recently finished, I could also argue that some characters in that one were pretty bland as well. Hummel and Sahad in particular come to mind, then some side characters as well who had almost no development. All in all I enjoyed it a lot though so thats why I was asking how Cold Steel compared to it.

Yeah, the trails can be pretty...archaic when it comes to things like side quest since it either expects you to backtrack and talk to EVERY SINGLE NPC like an autist or use a guide to find certain quest and other unlockables, it gets worse when they lick one to NG+ just so you can find out some new shit lore.

By the end game I always get burnt out and dont feel like touching a jrpg for months and move on to other genres.

You shouldn't worry about most of the mechanics in the game as long as you pay attention to it, a lot of those mechanics aren't even intended to be known and only lead to needless worry about things that are barely important to anyone but galaxy brain tier minmaxers who want to do insane challenge runs.
If it's your first SaGa game it's going to be rough, but you'll get used to it eventually, or stop trying, just remember that grinding mindlessly won't solve any of your problems, if anything it will give you more headaches, focus on getting better equipment, understanding how the battles work and exploring, talk to everyone and do guild quests, eventually you'll get the hang of it all.

The first one is indeed slow paced, but I personally found it very charming. I got hooked on it when I heard the Capua family theme in the prologue when you are searching for clues, I don't know why, but it made the scene really fun. Plus, things do escalate after a while, and Estelle grows as a character through it. Never really found the combat bad, but it does have it's flaws, like with enemies having a pretty big DEF scaling.

Absolutely not, but SaGa games are hardly similar to each other, outside of maybe the GB trilogy, you have a small set of rules common to the series, but even there, a lot of those rules are constantly polished or reworked depending on the game, no two games are similar outside of superficial elements and the general philosophy of the series.
RS3 uses the old videogame standard design while Scarlet uses the tabletop design that the series adopted starting with Unlimited, they're very, very different.

Unlimited works more like a classic dungeon crawler mixed up with a board game and a more hardcore set of mechanics, it's mechanically very dense and made for long gameplay sessions but at the same time it relaxes the amount of event variations in the game compared to previous games, since you have to worry more about what you're doing with your characters and even basic navigation.
Scarlet works and looks more similar to classic wargames, though in terms of mechanics it's a lot more relaxed, mostly because it's a handheld game so they decided to make it less complex to make it easy to pick up and play, it's similar, but at the same time the opposite of Unlimited.

If you like to play tabletop they're both fantastic games either way, Scarlet might not be as gorgeous as Unlimited and it's a lot more streamlined, but it still looks very cute at times and it easily beats Unlimited in variations when it comes to events, it has 15+ endings and a dynamic route system that gives you a lot of event variations depending on your quest or story choices, very rich lore too.

Give Unlimited another try though, it's not an easy game but once you get your engine ready for it it's incredibly addicting.

Really, just treat it as a dungeon crawler but with a tabletop aesthetic and UI.
The game is essentially a virtual tabletop in terms of ruleset and design, everything you do needs turns, what you do during a quest is recorded as part of your character history and all quests are self contained adventures, often with turn limits.
Don't be scared by the battle reel either, it's literally a timing minigame, the field reel actually works more like a dice throw since it can slip at times, but it works like that due to the fact that reel patterns change dynamically based on your proficiency levels with something in relation to your target level.

Just don't be afraid of it, it's a huge casual filter by design, if you need any help you can just ask here or in the /vr/ threads and people will help you out.

Individual fanbases will always attract more autism and be worse than genre fanbases. Hell, Kisekifags are just chill degenerates compared to shit like FFFags.

Visually, it's literally a diorama, you move your character around the diorama and see a lot of things popping up with their own tabletop models, it's really cute to look at, moreover, the game uses a FoW mechanic that obscures part of the maps you've not explored, even many icons do not appear until you get near them while on a certain region of the map, which is fun and always give you a reason to run around to see whether something new popped up while you were doing something elsewhere.
Mechanically, it's a game based entirely on setpieces, many of which are dynamic setpieces that change depending on how you progress through the game, a lot of changes also happen due to a soft turn system.
All battle events take a "turn" so to speak, you fight a group of enemies or do something that ends in a fight, a turn passes, said turn ends up being part of a hidden calculation that either refreshes an event or advances a timer for another event somewhere, some events that also seem irrelevant are actually hints about turn counts for certain dynamic events.
Progression wise, you might end up triggering events that change the maps a bit, like creating a new icon in the map that was previously hidden, change it into something else or work as a puzzle minigame of sorts.
Battle wise, it uses the usual formation mechanics coupled with a big overhaul of the system, but outside of some customary elements common to most of the games, there is little that is wargamey specifically, in that terms TLR has more core functions in its battle system.
It's more that the game is structurally and visually based on wargames but keeps its main identity as a classic turn based RPG, it's a nice hybrid really and a good idea for a handheld game.

Not really. CS at least has some depth by association with the earlier Trails games. CS is literally ARPG Persona with bare minimum development effort put into it.

I'm not sure that Cold Steel's association with earlier Trails titles is actually a good thing, considering that it retroactively degrades and ruins the writing and worldbuilding that previous games had so painstakingly set up.

Oh sure, everyone says that the premise is good, but they neglect to mention that the execution and pacing is absolutely fucked. TX at least doesn't waste your time with its cliche bullshit for four games and now maybe five straight.

It's been than the usual iseaki jrpg, the game is actually fun.

It’s basically persona but it prioritizes world building and fleshed out NPCs rather than individual character arcs.
And the gameplay is just ys lite with some kiseki customization elements which isn’t that bad, just needed less repetitive dungeons.

The gameplay is speedrunning through a bunch of boring blocky hallways and breaking boxes to continue a combo streak. It's boring as shit and fails to capture most of the fun of games like Ys or any other Falcom ARPGs. The boss fights aren't good either.

What's the best PS1 emulator?
Was using PSX 1.13 but I'm running into problems.
Can never run cues, says something's missing or it can't be read. I do not know if it's because I have the emulator on a External Harddrive or it's just something up with the emulator.
Is there a way to fix this or should I get a better emulator? If so, what?
