Dragon quest has sold tens of millions of copies on nintendo consoles and was a pioneer of its genre with some of the most iconic characters and moments. Sure it hasn't been represented well in smash with a wii fit trainer/animal crossing village tier nameless character but the series itself definitely holds up beside shit like final fantasy or castlevania

You should also be aware that western JRPG fans typically find the default difficulty too easy. Start the game with the stronger monsters setting in the Draconian Quest options. You can disable it mid-game if it's too hard but you can't enable it mid-game if the default is too easy.

For as much fanfare as Smash gets it's kind of a literal waste that MONEY is exchanged to even use all these third party characters and nothing is done with them besides fighting. No story to speak of to give more weight like remember how Dante from Devil May Cry had a small subplot in Shin Megami? That sort of stuff. Too bad Sakurai HATES stories. DQ games in general live and breathe because of Dragon Ball's art style. I want a main entry DQ game to instead have something more generic looking for an art style. Think Xeno series or better yet Tales. Do a Dragon Quest game with a different art style. And you know how DQ sells in Japan like 4 million units on average? I'm playing through it right now and I pretty much agree. Absolutely love the game otherwise, but the soundtrack is just okay-ish and a bit too limited. Like the same field and town music everywhere and it just kinda gets old after after a while. Ah well, really great otherwise, though. Huge world, really fun to explore, very pretty, and very satisfying so far on Draconian Quest combat difficulty.

However, if you look at the list, DQ5 occupies two spots for its SFC and DS versions separately. If you combine them I'm sure it's at the top or in second place after III, putting the recency bias for IX aside. If that poll happened today IX would not be high but III, V and arguably VIII still would be.

There's no connection between any games, and basically they're all great starting points. Play whatever you can.
1-3 and 4-6 are vaguely connected to eachother but they aren't necessary to enjoy them.

A lot of the mobile ports are some of the best ways to play the retro versions, as the games have had a lot of content added in over the years, especially 4-6 adding a hell of a lot more party chatter, which livens up the plot greatly.

It's a shame to have another anime swordsman with the state of Smash as it is, but that problem is really because of Fire Emblem being so over-represented. Still, it's nice to have DQ and FF in the same game.

I really don't think it's a taunt. Compare the actual Slime taunt and the solo Slime part in the video. Slime is just standing completely still before jumping off into another direction. That's not very taunt-like, especially since taunts are supposed to be pretty fast now.

The solo Slime is a stage decoration on the Dragon Quest stage, same as Dialga and Palkia are stage decorations on Spear Pillar.

It wasn't just her combo ability that made her top tier, she had those AND MORE. THOSE are options. The DLC newcomers in general had more utility in some special moves alone than most characters had in all their moves combined. Consider how Cloud forces you to go in after him with his Limit Break charge or how Ryu has superarmor on demand with his input shoryu.

That doesn't make for a fun game when some characters can barely do anything and other characters do what they can, better, and even more on top of that. Why play Ike in Smash 4 when Cloud has his kit but better? Why play Robin when Hero has his gimmick but more useful?
