Some times people just want something basic

Being basic is the appeal.
It's well crafted.

There is a certain purity to its design. Its classic and stays there but modernizes graphics. It gets a bit of a pass by its name but it always gives exactly what it advertises. Simple fantasy fan fare, simple to understand mechanics and a memorable artstyle that is held consistently. So I'd say that its basicness is what works

well yeah that used to be the appeal
now its basic and streamlined like final fantasy

Sometimes, people don't need a ton of bells and whistles on a roleplaying "experience". Sometimes, they just want a fun little game.

For me, being basic is it. I played like 5 hours of Tales of Berseria and my brain slid out of my ears, the genre and games I loved as a kid are unrecognizable now

the story gets batshit Xenoblade Chronicles-tier crazy

>now its basic
Correct.
>and streamlined
Correct
>like final fantasy
Wrong. FF convolute the gameplay everytime. Different beasts.
Not saying that FF is CHALLENGING or anything, just that FF never wanted to be simple, while DQ made this point B&B to the series.

I dont care much for the gameplay but the story is mindblowing

Oh man, I fuckinkg loved the insanity of XC. The whole God enemy is now a sci-fi enemy and universe is amazing.
I want 200 hours to ply this again.

Its kino

The fact that it's basic and the fact that it's a series with a lot of tradition and legacy to it.
If you're in the west you get well made accents as well.

>It's the most pure RPG ever.
Fixed.

S O U L

Stfu casual bitch OP

Basic systems is what I want from JRPGs
Aiming for complex just seems to make a mess. Give me DQ over something like End of Eternity any day.

You answered your own question tardo

Do the DQ games all take place in the same universe? I've never played one.

dragon quest makes major changes every game too, but its more along the lines of trying something new/improving rather than purposefully changing aspects of the battle system to be different

Something about books and immortality. And be careful around the sequel.

Attached: download.png (700x722, 114K)

it's not confirmed but probably not

Because many people just want the fucking fundamentals without any of the bullshit. I can tell you right now that 100% of DQ fans that actively play multiple DQ games enjoy the fact that the characters are just enough, the fights are just enough, the story is just enough, and the remaining features are either easy to get a handle on, or are fun minigames with item rewards. I can also guarantee you right now that some high grade remake of DQIII would sell like crack in Japan if you retained the spirit of the original with updated aesthetic properties simply because it doesn't pretend it's trying to revolutionize JRPGs as a whole.

Attached: 1558036034252.gif (500x324, 2.49M)

Dragon Quest III and IV were good back in the late 80s and early 90s. Then FFVI, Chrono Trigger, and FFVII came out and made those games obsolete. Then Ocarina of Time showed that games could be both long and fun, and since then JRPGs have served no purpose in this world.

Most if not all are at least on different continents if not different universes entirely.

DQ is pure.

Being a fan of Final Fantasy has been suffering for over a decade. It was defiled, while DQ never had a moment like that.

The very moment that any of these smash dipshits demand that the DQ series do something different they'll be missing the point so hard. It's unfortunate because it will definitely happen.

Oh yeah, with this I can agree 100%.

No worries there bro. As a smashfag I couldn't give less of a fuck about DQ and will continue to not give a fuck. Carry on doing whatever it is that you do, because I don't fucking care.

There is or was at least some layered multiverse fuckery going on
But the last hint of it was like 30 years ago so I'm not holding my breath on getting any elaboration now.

3 (4?) games take place in one world
Another 3 take place in another world
The rest are compelety seperate.

fucking exactly, it does the most basic things perfectly

Filled with monsters you wanna puff puff

Attached: Dragon Quest XI.jpg (3840x2160, 3.67M)

>Simple enough for anyone to jump into any game and go
>Doesn't try to reinvent the wheel so longtime fans can play through the games without some strange new bullshit messing with everything

DQbros, the 3DS version of VIII add much stuff?
I want to replay but I don't know if I play the original or the 3DS, I am not a fan of the system.

Why is “basic” considered a bad thing?

Some hard facts here: Final Fantasy lead me to believe that RPGs lived or died on their story. Dragon Quest taught me that you could have an actually good game as an RPG, and that the handful of good games I had played weren't just one-off quirky side games.

turn based bad

Attached: 1507737660816.png (629x504, 36K)

>DQbros, the 3DS version of VIII add much stuff?
Lots. Two new characters, a lot more content, and you can marry the big-tittied sorcerer girl as an alternate ending.

8 feels like a nice old storybook with thick pages

It added a couple of new playable characters, and you can marry Jessica if you're into that. Also buffed Yangus a bit.

One word; soul

That is the appeal.

Fuck, playabble characters. That alone seal the deal. Two of them.
I loved Jessica.
I am into that. Hell, Jessica and Yangus are my favorites, I loved him too.

Thank you anons!

What? I played XI and the story never gets too far from your cliche JRPG. Even the part where you "lose" half way through the game has been done multiple times.

There you go

yeah idk what the hell theyre talking about, i just disregard any post containing a xenoblade opinion at this point

It's the best there is at what it does: the classic, pure JRPG. It's remained a solid and popular series for so long because it sticks to the core of what makes it good.

As a result, however, the games don't really excell in the genre. They'll always be good but never really great. But, that's okay. All things considered, it's better that they've stayed this way, otherwise they might be in Final Fantasy's situation.

Attached: file.png (171x295, 80K)

Personally I never got it either.
Until I saw Martina, now I see the appeal.

Its basic, but that doesnt mean it doesnt innovate within itself.

Dragon quest is known for several things:
-Engaging stories
-Great Writing
-Refined battle system
-Appealing artstyle and graphics
-and constant dynamic changes between every entry.

They may all build off of the same framework, more or less, but each game stands out in their own way.

Attached: IMG_20190615_193355.jpg (735x725, 47K)

>tfw love the DQ world but the gameplay will always be turn based

i just want one main game to be action RPG

Hi guys, Im the completionist, and today I'll be covering the top 10 dragon quest ga- HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT OUR SPONSOR DRAGON QUEST HEROES 2

they perhaps don't stick in your mind as well as some other games, probably because they're so complete and satisfying by the end, but i would call them great, i always enjoy my time with any dq

It's like the original Dragon Ball / Z, it's just fun and you can play it an hour or two at a time

Squenix will burn to the ground the day they change the DQ formula.

Attached: At the Inn.jpg (1280x904, 279K)

i said main game, not spin off musou shit

redpill me on dragon quest, where do I start?

I kind of dig the gameplay of Dragon Quest and would be down for a solid series of JRPGs but I really hate Toriyama's art and I never liked DQ's music from the little bits that i've experienced.
What game is the least likely to have my gripes with the series? I still kinda want to give it a go

DQXI.

Attached: 1536124615696.jpg (1600x900, 369K)

1, user.

Attached: gbc_dragonwarrior1and2.jpg (574x514, 105K)

Because its the best basic RPG around. I don't get the complaints about it being "Generic". It started the entire phenomena, and all of the games are excellently crafted and different from each other. I mean, for gods sake, there were two back to back games focused on multiplayer, and they *worked*.
They had a monster taming spinoff series, and that had its own spinoff series, and it worked.

Attached: d215aa3cee30d26e923d2fbb15356888.jpg (1378x2039, 1.66M)

that's dragon warrior you fucking retard

I can't see them without a dick and dancing.

Fuck that FF is shit now with it's action rpg shit have you looked at the FFVII remake?
>Press 1 button through out the fight
>Slow down time and use your super move
>Go back to spamming 1 button

>tfw watching Trials of mana remake artstyle being the same as dragon quest but after watching gameplay i realized it's not as polished and the world doesn't feel as good as in DQ.

trials combat looks good, i too wish DQ would try that at least for one entry.

It's the same game, just American.

This.
One is a good game even today.
You will finish in a few hours and there you go, just go for what you want.

>It's the most basic RPG ever.
And?

I think 10 or 11 was almost arpg but fan rioted

sounds better than the original combat too me

If you want to experience the basic DQ combat at its most refined before any major changes came along, Id say Dragon quest IV is your best bet.

One, Two, and Three, while good games, are a bit outdated by todays standards. Only go to them if you really enjoyed IV.

Dragon Quest V changes up the formula in a good way, you'll enjoy it more after playing IV.
Do not play Dragon Quest Six. Its really awful and the black sheep of the series.

Dragon quest 7 is a billion hours long and is standard fair.

Dragon Quest 8 revolutionized the series once more, go here after playing V

Dragon Quest 9 was designed with online Multiplayer in Japan in mind, skip it.

You cant play DQ 10.

DQ11 revolutionised the series once more and its the best game in the series, you can start here but I advise you not to because all of the heartfelt references and love towards the series will go completely over your head and you wont appreciate the advancements as much.

I get the appeal, my only real beef is that DQ always seems to get a pass out of nostalgia for things other games would get blasted for.

Attached: mehsuzu.png (177x152, 31K)

Like what?

Attached: Dragon-Quest-Your-Story_04-03-19.jpg (600x337, 60K)

that was IX

youtube.com/watch?v=uw95eMdbgLw

>feeling nostalgia is bad
Screw you.

Attached: 1367012859153.png (500x491, 335K)

III
V
VIII
In that order
Then IX, IV, or XI depending on which game of the first three you liked the most

You get to kill dragon and questing.

it does the fundamentals well, without weird convoluted plots and dumb junction systems that make no sense

>It's the most basic RPG ever.
That's exactly why it's appealing, more nostalgia fuel as we descend into apathy and old age.

Attached: 1496107366518.jpg (482x427, 40K)

Only played 8. Is 11 worth it?
And Dragon Quest Monsters for GBC was my shit. Is there a better one?

Attached: 1559820438737.jpg (1030x1042, 153K)

Jesus I guess you FF fags just eat anything they shit out

It gets a pass because it started the damn thing.
Why dont people get this, Dragon Quest created turn based combat, it doesn't need to innovate at all, and it still does. It preceded the FF Job system with Vocations, it preceded Bravely Defaults entire gimmick with the Tension system, it preceded fucking Pokemon with Monster taming

It literally doesn't matter.
Start with the one that's easy to get and looks interesting to you.

Feeling nostalgia is not bad.
Denying to see the faults of a thing knowing it's nostalgia talking, is.

Oh thanks

>says the guy in a DQ thread, of all things
The irony.

>Press 1 button through out the fight
>Slow down time and use your super move
It's literally the same as the original except now you can do basic attacks at will and you use the ATB for everything else. Also there's having to dodge and different button timings change your combo. You can even do launchers and shit. Only thing I dislike is the FFXIII stagger mechanic.

Nostalgia. DQ is bigger than FF in Japan because all otakus grew up with the series. It is THE definitive jrpg in Japan the same way Final Fantasy is in the West.

Other user was right. There are good ways to do action combat and modern FF is not one of them. Even FF1 was more fun to play than FF15, and DQ is a series that never tried to reinvent itself every time, just improve on itself.

Pure is the perfect word for it, and its a lot of fun.

>tfw you started and fell in love with DQ because of VII, but it's the one that everyone neglects to recommend because it's so long.

Attached: downloadfile.jpg (400x240, 93K)

If your 3ds is hacked, go get the Orchestrated Uncensored CIA. With that alone it makes it a hundred times better.

get 11 S when it comes out for Switch

Just play heroes 2. Its a full fledged jrpg in musou style

DQIX remaster for switch when?
I loved creating my own guys, even though the story suffered for it.

Attached: 1478978903754.jpg (436x396, 36K)

And I bet megaten precedes that since it is the first monster taming game

Attached: 67FAF1DE-6A47-463D-98E6-E66885C92470.gif (328x328, 1.95M)

Oh yeah, I remember seeing this.
Do you know if v4 is the most recent one?
And thank you!

>Denying to see the faults of a thing

Ok, what are the faults of the DQ games?

How long is long? Standard JRPG 80 hours?

youre retarded, ocarina is just 3d link to the past

It let's you put your persona and craft it yourself. Also game play > story

Similar to how a book v movie is.

I'm so upset she wasn't in as an alt.

Extremes.
It's 10/10 (1,5, 7, 8) or 0/10 (2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 11).
It's the definition of hit or miss.
Some people may see this as a positive point, I don't.
This, of course, is for me. I know other people have different tastes.

i wish final fantasy were more like dragon quest. atb was kind of the pinnacle of ff combat.

And CT was the pinnacle of ATB.
It's not just combat.

I'll give you 2 and 6 but all the other ones are great shit fucking III is pure kino if you played 1 and 2 first

Builders. No, I'm not kidding. It's only 25% minecraft. The other 75% is Dragon Quest Action-RPG.

>Dragon Quest created turn based combat

Attached: 1402941757874.jpg (756x972, 233K)

>atb was kind of the pinnacle of ff combat

Attached: 1392688262983.png (570x489, 407K)

Are you me?

And we came to this.
People that don't know what they are saying but are sure that is the truth. Others will parrot and bang. Yea Forums.
Except you.

DQ11 is so fucking easy, barf

>it preceded Bravely Defaults entire gimmick with the Tension system
Tension and Brave are completely different functionally.
Also DQ did not invent turn based combat, no clue how you've come to believe that.

I dislike RPGs in general but I like DQ since its one of the few games that give me a pure hearted adventure feeling. Party members grow on you, recruiting them is fun and its fun watching them interact with each other, the story lines are really simple and not that complicated but they are charming and fun. Its a fun series user, the closest thing I would compare it is early One Piece.

Attached: 1544393029036.jpg (1122x1278, 328K)

What exactly is wrong with DQ6?

>Party members grow on you, recruiting them is fun
youtu.be/TLqsHwAWT0Q

>Dragon Quest created turn based combat
How did the DQ fanbase get THIS cancerous?

I know very little about DQ besides toriyama art and the composer being a prick

Convince me to pick DQXI back up, I just reached a desert race and a homosexual joined my group when I stopped playing. Was I almost done with the game?

It gets a pass because it's unpretentious.
Nobody ever got in front of a crowd at E3 and said "THIS GAME WILL REVOLUTIONIZE HOW YOU PLAY RPGs!"
Doesn't happen.
Most game series have a gimmick, and then iterate on that gimmick.
DQ's gimmick is that it has no gimmick. It's simple. Stalwart. It's a home-made beef stew after a long day at work.

So it's a JRPG for white people

The 3DS version is about that, yeah. And it's had a LOT of the fat trimmed.

The original version was well over a hundred hours, and that's assuming you missed all the side stuff. My first playthrough was 132 hours.

>Tension
>Monster training
>Online
>Crafting
>Multiple Chapters with different protagonists
>Basic

Attached: 1b4e2e9e9ca89cad3fbe701cd5b06f31.jpg (550x733, 314K)

youtube.com/watch?v=PpGPFyDkcgg

The party members are the selling point for me, the combat system is as simple as JRPGs go but everything else is really comfy and touching.

Hmm..

Attached: 78d.jpg (376x376, 12K)

you weren't even close, the game is pretty expansive. sylvando is my least favorite party member but even then i'd consider him tolerable. i'd say the game gets better. if you don't like it at Octagonia you probably won't like it at all though.

Is the music in XI any good?

One of the main reasons I enjoyed VIII enough to actually finish the never ending fucker was because of the unbelievably beautiful OST.

It still does do that stuff, sure, but nothing that ever significantly changes the base experience. The frosting might be different, and there might be those weird plastic balloon things on top, but the cake is still the same.

It's not like Final Fantasy, which goes out of its way to re-invent itself every game.

Or worse, like Pokemon, which is the same every game, while also claiming to be different and new

Attached: Birthday Cake.jpg (800x1200, 311K)

Yes but get the orchestrated music mod.

You're literally not even a quarter of the way done.

Also fuck off, Sylvando is the best party member by a country mile

I bet you wont source me up

Artist is E10
Character Name is Veronica from DQ11

WTF dude, she looks like a 12 years old.

>DQ XI S only on switch
for what purpose square? I have ps4 and a switch but it seems like waste and a dick move to lock the definitive edition in another system after you released the original one on the ps4. Now I have the conflict of deciding whether to play the ps4 one or wait for the definitive on the switch

Attached: 1533977827038.jpg (320x320, 20K)

The new content coming to Switch was part of the 3DS version of the game, that's probably why.

yea, thought so

Attached: 1341688302562.jpg (600x850, 302K)

I ride motorcycles. The ones with the most technology are fun but not always the best choice. They sometimes come with problems, although they are very awesome for having said technology.

A basic motorcycle with no technology is what I like the most. It's basic, headache free, and simply gives you what you want - in it's most basic form.

Hope this makes sense.

Dick moves from Square are more often than not at this point. You arent missing much, its hardly "Definitive" like the marketing would make you believe. Definitely doesnt have enough new content to justify being called definitive anyway..

Yeah it sucks.
I was halfway through the PC version when S was announced. I'm not going to buy the same game twice though. The tradeoff is better visuals I guess.

There's a good chance it could sell really well on switch which makes me happy.

Attached: 1483807734548.jpg (542x675, 44K)

That is the appeal. Too much bullshit in modern jrpgs

the more i think about it the more i feel like FF has never been good, but the games with atb are generally better than the shit like 15

>It's the most basic RPG ever.
That's why

So I guess "more is less" is the lesson of the thread.
Might give DQ another chance some day

I like your analogy a lot and it helps me understand your point. But as someone who doesn't like DQ, I think the comparison is not perfect because it devalues videogames as an artform. To me, DQ is one of the "big greats" (One Piece, Detective Conan, Pokemon) that dominates Japan's media landscape and forces a lot of more creative things to compete with each other. While in the west we tend to fetishize Japanese zaniness, a LOT of Japanese writers and game designers end up just doing the same old schlock over and over. Japan's obsession with nostalgia and satisfying the least offensive tastes is why interestjng games like Xenogears or NieR go ignored by Square.

The only good FF is 1
In my opinion

The only real problems with 1 through 8 is that Balance was never really a factor, and you could break the games in half. Especially 3 and 5

The only thing I knew of Dragon Quest before was that the priest from the 3rd game was hot as fuck. God orange bodysuits are godlike.
That's all I had to say.

>Japan's obsession with nostalgia and satisfying the least offensive tastes

>implying only Japan is obsessed with nostalgia and satisfying pleb tastes

Attached: 1465533445362.jpg (640x640, 22K)

Congrats you can just swap the music of 11 for the one in 8 in S except for battle music

It's for people with literally no life to waste their days away. That's why it's only popular in the bug man capital of the world

Lttp is designed to be beaten over a weekend, if not marathoned un a single day. Oot is a very, very long game.

>tfw when you bought DQ11 on PC and it was glorious but you never finished it, now there's no point until the the Switch release.

Attached: 2121545.png (684x342, 209K)

>OOT
>Long
what the fuck?
it's got an overworld the size of a shoebox

Attached: 1389922229932.jpg (518x479, 387K)

Cant be nostalgia when I played my first DQ game at 27 and its now my favorite series ever

>Buy 2DS thinking I'll play DQXI here
>Turns out it was and never will be localized in English
Fuck, it's not fair :'(

It's not. See Transformers or Marvel movies. But whereas in the US those become popular because they're easy to understand/appreciate, in Japan people are culturally taught that the thing that is most appealing to all is also the best. Routine and identification within a group and pivotal to Japanese society.

There's a reason every anime/game character has to fit into predefined roles that match their hair color, there's a reason that gacha games come from Asia, there's a reason kids in Japan still watch the same anime characters from 50 years ago. People like Kojima, Suda51 or Yoko Taro exist despite this system. Imagine if Japan actually started encouraging kids to be creative and different instead of oppressively beating down the nail that sticks out. It would be an even greater media power.

still upset about this, has anyone started on a fan translation?

hey, I want to know, which is the best way to play DQ IX?
hated the DS version somehow.

You still get to play 7 and 8.

FUCK OFFFFF
I JUIST WANNT MY FUCKING TB GAMESSSS
FFIFUFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUCCCCCK OFFFFFFFF

>There's a reason every anime/game character has to fit into predefined roles that match their hair color
Yeah, because anime threw itself into an ever shrinking market of dedicated hardcore fans, and dedicated hardcore fans hate everything new in every subculture. Comic books have been going through the same thing for thirty years.

if anyone announced such it would get C&D'd pretty fast
just sit tight

No it would dbe a complete piece of trash like america is
Japan creates good art because they are taught that repetition is a virtue so they repeat and repeat an they get really fucking good ans then they add a personal touch and you get the insane variety Japan provides

Your beliefs are completely wrong

No and its very doubtful there will be one since the game isnt locked to that system and all the content in the 3ds one will go on XI S

DQ IX is only on the DS.

True, I was hoping I can replay though the entire series in just one system though.

Are there any DQ games with dating mechanics? I only play jrpgs where I can pretend I have a gf now.

why don't they make smt a looter shooter

This, still upset no-one ever bothered to translate Ni No Kuni on the DS because of this, as well as the GBA Ace Attorney Games.

not really but if you play 5 it's like having a wife (not a waifu)

That was one of my favorite moments in all of JRPGs

Attached: c5d.png (374x490, 49K)

I've gotta ask, what makes six so awful?

i think you can romance people in DQXI switch.

>It's the most basic RPG ever.
You just answered your own question. Nips have supremely shitty taste. About 25% of japanese people are on the spectrum and unironically love to play the same game over and over again.

but maybe there are things that don't need change?
every DQ already has different protags/worlds to make it feel fresh.

Let me list them:

- Highest encounter rate in the series
- Shitty Vocation System
- shitty monster designs
-Reusing basic monsters designs as bosses
-Reusing Boss designs as regular enemies immediately after the boss for hours on end
-Character design is purposefully reminiscent of Chrono trigger
-Plot is purposefully reminiscent of Chrono trigger
-Dream world is an awful mechanic, story wise
-Bosses are never hyped up, they simply appear, you fight them, and then they die.
-you cant switch party members mid dungeon like you could before

I like flawed things a lot- high highs and low lows- because they encourage me to think about things differently. Dragon Quest is the literal opposite- it's mindless drivel that takes up time. That's the essence of popular things in Japan. Taking up time on the train or at home because you work 12 hours a day and hate your wife.

I don't want to shit on DQ, but how the literal fuck can it even be considered a competitor in the JRPG world when other turn based games have evolved and done some really unusual/interesting things? Why would anyone choose to play a DQ game for 60 hours when they could play literally any SMT game (mainline or Persona) and get a much more refined game experience PLUS characters and plot that aren't for an infant or escapist Japanese salaryman? Why aspire for mediocrity when one can aspire for greatness?

Guess I'll skip that one then. Thanks user.

>DQ IV on mobile has party chat unlike the DS one
I fucking hate you Square, why are you making me play mobile shit, I fucking hate myself for being a sucker for the party chat.

Attached: 1544766273049.jpg (1024x1024, 155K)

Beside what stated it's also worth noting that DQVII took the vocation system from DQVI and improved it greatly, meaning that VI isn't even unique mechanically.

By no means is DQVI an awful or bad game, but it feels very bland in just about every area. It feels like Chunsoft just wanted something to release asap, leaving most of the game feeling uninspired.

Why bother? You sound like an idiot.

maybe so but it's still DQ
the soundtrack's quite the banger desu.

yeah i prefer the the featureless post 2000's anime artstyle myself, the lack of detail and soul are really great

The controls are surprisingly well optimized for what essentially the easiest version to pirate

Because every other game went and did something different, that means DQ is the only game series doing what it does. It is unique in its traditional conventions, and even then, it does do interesting twists, it just does so without compromising any of its basic premise. There's nothing stating a story or game has to be wholly unconventional and unique to be well told and well constructed, and thus worth enjoying.

I may be wrong but with an emulator I believe you can add back party chat via cheats on the ds version.

Fair enough. Enjoy your series, happy you got into Smash.

This is easily the most incorrect opinion I've ever seen in my life.

>Hey, remember that thing in DQII where as soon as you get the boat, we plop you into a fuck-huge map with key points you have to hit that have little-to-no queues or signposting at all? And then we also sprinkled in random encounters everywhere that are barely effected by Holy Water or Holy Protection?
>Oh yeah, that was awful and turned a 10 hour section into a 40 hour one. Why do you ask?
>How about for our new RPG, we do that same thing.
>...
>Not just once, not just twice, but THREE and a half times!
>...GENIUS!

Also the fact that it started to dip a little too far into Final Fantasy game philosophy and basically made every mini and major boss past the 1/3rd mark completely immune to ANY type of altering spells that you would like to cast on them while also giving them all disrupting waves to break your buffs, and then even giving them a free turn to cast it.

6 is a fucking mess, which is a shame, because the plot is way more interesting to me than 4 and 5.

The E3 Treehouse direct confirmed that it has both Symphonic and Synthesized soundtrack as well as another toggle to turn on Japanese voices or English voices.

There's literally no reason not to now. Especially because XI's lack-luster music was the #1 complaint most people, even fans, level at it.

>he's never played VII
Lmao get a load of this dude

>DQ VII in 10/10
>DQ III, IV and even VI in 0/10

I'm thinking of getting into the series. I wanna play some of the best games. If I start with XI S, then play VIII on 3DS, then play some of the spinoffs like Joker (to fill my monster catching RPG itch after Pokemon has disappointed me for the last time) and Rocket Slime, would that be a good entry point and order?

It's not like DQ is a basic RPG, it's that DQ invented what you call basic.

I haven't played XI, but sure why not?
It seems to be a good entry point.
VIII is a well liked title, so it's a good follow-up
I super liked the original DQ monsters, so if Joker is like that you won't be disappointed
Don't know anything about rocket slime tho

Never played Dragon Quest. How is the combat? is it the kind of game where you can hold 99 potions and heal nonstop? Because I hate that.

Literally what are you talking about. The exploration element is what makes 6 one of the best in series. Easily the most replayable by far. 4 and 5 have bad early pacing for me (chapters ruin a real sense of progression, the kid stuff in 5 drags). Both are still in top 5 DQs however. I like that 6 starts right away with intrigue and never stops with revelations. Maybe its the SaGa fan in me. Also if you ever get lost you can just back to the cabin with the witch and she points you in the right direction.

character inventory space is usually meaningfully limited

You select attack, spell, defend until the monsters are dead
Personal inventory space is limited

That is the appeal. It’s not some pretentious deconstruction or some big ass bombastic game that’s trying to hard. It’s just a series of competent JRPGs. It’s vanilla ice cream

Someone convince to keep going with DQV. I got to the faerie world and I'm bored out of mind. Does the story ever pick up or does it get good party members eventually? I'm thinking of trying 4 instead because I've heard it's party members are good and it's more fast paced. The only other JRPGs I've played are FF4 and 7 which are a lot more fast paced and have strong characters and stories. I want strong stories and characters and if DQ in general doesn't really offer that instead of something like the exploration and gameplay focus of something like FF3 and 5. Look I'm a pleb when it comes to JRPGs and probably should play the normie option of Chrono Trigger instead.

I remember really liking DQIX because of having the ability to customize your party heavily. Shame that most of the content is now locked behind a dead system though

There's a fan server type thing up actually to redownload the DLC

For some reason I always loved Gypsy's Dance from IV youtu.be/uL_bzdGbknU

Jeez you have not even started yet
IV isnt really more fast paced either.

It's a comfy series and I haven't played a bad one. Despite the length of Dragon Warrior VII on PS1, none of the titles have let me down like Final Fantasy (VIII, XII, Lightning Returns) or Tales(Zestiria) But that's just my reason.

it's literally classic CRPGs with a modernized touch without forgetting the roots and still being approachable enough for any casual crowd to get into if they want an RPG to sink their teeth into. the big thing is the adventure and cast per-game, and that really only started becoming a real notable thing in the later half of the series.

Yeah I get that. From what I saw of a review of 4 is that the initial chapters for the characters are quite short and concise. When does 5 pick up? Like I said I'm use to the more fast pace of the FF games. Is 5's characters and story good? If not I'm not going to bother.

Different user here, DQV is usually the most celebrated DQ game in terms of story and characters. The game follows the protagonist throughout his life, seeing the people and world around him change.

What I like about Dragon Quest, and what has always stuck with me, is how great and fun the writing is and how your party has something to say about LITERALLY EVERYTHING. At least that's the way it is in 6. See a guy digging a hole? After you talk to him your whole party has something to say about it. Observe a mirror? Same thing. You really feel like you're traveling with companions.

Also Toriyama art is just wonderful

IX Quester’s rest theme
8’s final boss theme
The opening of Demon combat
The Dragon Quest monsters battle theme

No. It's the realized ideal of the generic JRPG, so imagine the most generic JRPG combat you can except that it's good. Your items are limited both by only being able to carry so much into combat and by resources being available just enough that you can always get what you want as long as you're choosy. All your spells have a use and you never fall into the cycle of popping your damage options then restoring your resources forever since buffs and debuffs matter. Random encounters come at just the right pace in most games and you have to give serious consideration into how you manage your resources going through a dungeon, then every boss has you working out your best options and trying to manage risks.

Don't skip it, give it a try. The characters are wonderful, dream world is cool

What's the appeal of a grilled cheese sandwich? It's the most basic sandwich ever.

Attached: grilled-cheeses.jpg (610x458, 93K)

Maybe another hour or two? Once you're done with the fairy world it shifts into high gear. If you just started the fairy world, I don't really remember exactly how long it takes, but it shouldn't be more than an hour or so.
Honestly a lot of the game is going to be short epsiodic stories like the ghost busting and fairy world anyway, and that goes for all the games in the series so you really might as well get used to it.
They usually tie into the larger story, actually extremely heavily in the case of the ghost busting adventure and fairy world actually, so it's not like it's not like you're just doing stuff for stuff's sake.

You asked for this.

what a dumb comment

Go back to retardera

while that poster is a retard, neither of these games have proper job systems, just standard classes like in Wizardry.

DQ games usually have some great characters.

This is perfectly accurate.

I loved in CT how every fight took place on the overworld.

God, fuck Chrono Cross.

Are motorcycles really as dangerous as people say?

You're right on the cusp of understanding my point but couldn't quite get there, could you champ?

If I recall correctly Sugiyama doesn't want to just port games to newer consoles he prefer the Dragon Quest team to remake the games instead, so that would be a lot of work.
They technically have every game playable on the 3DS though in Japan which is neat

Who else can be married? Jessica's mom?

considering his assholery with the franchise for wanting to profit off of orchestra showings and holding soundtracks hostage practically, that sounds like a scheme to force more licensing money out of Square-Enix

Jrpgs in general are basic and linear I don't get why weebs like them. Might as well read a book or watch a movie.

People who focus on the battle system are missing the point. DQ isn't a game about battles like most JRPGs are, it's a game about resource management. The battles are just there to deplete your resources.

In DQ, your character can only hold a limited amount of items. It depends on the game, but usually it's around 10 per characters, and sometimes that includes their equipment. Other items go in the bag (and the older games didn't even have a bag), and you can't access the bag in battle. That means you're limited by what item you bring in battle AND each individual character's item; if you only have on Yggdrasil Leaf and the character holding it is the one who dies, you're screwed.
Exploration is really important in DQ. The games tend to be non-linear, dungeons tend to be labyrinths, the world maps tend to be huge. Most JRPGs don't require so much exploration, especially in the modern age where they can't even do a world map. DQ8 and DQ11 still have world maps and they're full-scale. But exploration means more battle, which means more depleting of your resources; your HP, MP, items for healing, and so on. It is pretty likely in DQ that you won't be able to reach your destination the first time, or complete a dungeon the first time doing it, and go back to town to heal.
In DQ, when you reach a new town, it is extremely unlikely that you'll be able to buy all the newly available equipment. You'll often reach a new town with 2000 Gold on you and have the new weapons and armors cost 1000 Gold each, and you have 4 characters to gear up. In a lot of other JRPG series, you'll never run out of money and you'll be able to fully equip all your characters every time you reach a new town.

Oh fuck I meant Yuji Horii not Sugiyama

>but its more along the lines of trying something new/improving rather than purposefully changing aspects of the battle system to be different
Uh no. Yeah, they "improve" marginally. It's like wearing white socks instead of the usual black socks. Sure, it's different but no random onlooker will notice.

Meanwhile FF actually tries to re-invent itself each entry, which is more riskier of course, but I like that. Matter of preference.

Nah I'm just kidding. It's the purist who are low IQ, and it's hilarious seeing them defend the purity of the game and yet they don't realize the essence of the game. All they see is skin deep.

That's the point

It was the first JRPG that kickstarted the whole genre on consoles in the format you see today. Being basic is the best it can be because it was the ORIGINAL.

He is easily the most jacked of all DQ heroes though.

I can't speak for the later ones because I haven't played them, but I like the earlier ones because there's very little story and the battles are fast-paced and there's not too much cutsenes and other non-gameplay shit making me want to sleep.

Hell if I know. I dropped Dq11 for the third time last month. It's the most boring jrpg I played this goddam year. It's just BLAND in every single way imaginable

I'm rewatching and reading OP right now and you're wrong.
I've been enjoying all of it, even the early arcs except Little Garden, fuck that piece of shit part. In short, you've got no taste so suck some more dicks.

Finding a version didn't take me long, but playing it is a chore with 15-20 fps. I can run the PS2 version just fine at full framerate, why the fuck is Citra so unoptimized?

>It worked then so it's still great
That's a thing FF has over DQ, even if some episodes for final fantasy aren't as good as some others, they are all worth playing because they are different games, using different systems. The plot is only the cherry on the cake.
I've played DQ8 for 40 hours and I wanted to kill myself considering how mind numbing the gameplay is. It was okay for 30 hours, but 50+ is really pushing it. At that point I wanted to watch the end of the game of youtube.

Less grindy, more monsters, fast battles and better environments to explore.

Why dont' jrpgs give you authentic choices to make, that impact the story in a meaningful way? I've never been put in a moral dilemma.

How come jrpgs have such bad acting, the npcs are all lifeless, even if their towns are raped and burned, they barely show emotions or add any sense of urgency to the story.

How come your party is so complacent? They just do whatever they are told, storywise.

How come battles are so easy? basically hold X to win, then when there's a boss, hold X to win + heal + cast his weakness a few times.

How come optimal itemization is so obvious and easy? what's the point of items if Great Sword + 5 is the best in slot? Items should alter play style, not just give you bigger damage numbers

Why are do jrpgs all follow the same scheme, visit town, gear up, head to dungeon, fight trash, fight the boss. Visit new town, gear up, head to dungeon, fight trash, fight the boss...rinse repeat until the last boss.

Why are they so afraid of taking RISKS? Doing something really unique and surprising? Fucken hell.

Legend of Mana was quite unique, Persona 4 is quite unique I guess. But still too easy to challenge pro gamers like us.

Attached: Legend of Mana Underworld.jpg (800x600, 113K)

Because everything you proposed would make the games sell less

And that is bad?

>It's the most basic RPG ever.
Well yeah, it's basically the Ur-JRPG. It's basic because it invented the genre. It's not LITERALLY the very first JRPG but it was one of the very first with huge (HUGE in Japan) mainstream success and it was what solidified a ton of the JRPG tropes into the genre as we know it today. That's like complaing Mario Bros is "too basic" as a Platform Game. It's supposed to be.

This reads like someone who hasn't played a JRPG since the SNES

3, 5 and 9 are the only ones worth playing. 3's a bit better if you've played 1 too which is very short itself. Couldn't comment on the spinoffs, the trailer for Builders 2 looks charming at least.

Modern jrpgs haven't changed much from their 16 and 32bit incarnations. Most people in this thread praise DQ for remaining basic and not taking risks. That's a shame.

I guess they changed in graphics and presentation, more cutscenes, more bloat, more waifus and anime tropes.

Only jrpgs that really improved in a noticeable way are action jrpgs, simply having better combat systems.

Mario Bros has still its own flavor that others couldn't replicate while DQ is quite barebones, it's not exactly the same.

maario naharis

DQfags don't care about all that. It's the good ol' comfe "adventure" that plays exactly like the last one and it's a sacred cow.

I've reached Zoma's castle in DQ3. What level should I be to take it all on? My characters are around 40, only done class change to make a fighter and a sage. Felt I should do the same for my Cleric but I've been too lazy.

Class changing in 3 isn't necessary. You can beat the game without ever doing it. Early to mid 40s is a good level for Zoma. Make sure you dispell his barrier or you will wipe at your current level.

>Modern jrpgs haven't changed much from their 16 and 32bit incarnations.
Mate, Dragon Quest is pretty much the only traditional JRPG left. How the fuck is FF15 anything like FF6?

yikes

It’s comfy, light-hearted and fun

you sound like someone that gets all their JRPG opinions from Dunkey and boils down everything to strawman hyperbole.

Wish Legend of Mana was on that collection they released the other day.

Why do so many people want DQ to change so much? Just play something else. This ONLY happens to DQ; the VAST MAJORITY of video game series don't change much from one game to another. That's the fucking point of a series. Every time other series change too much, fans complain and the devs change it back in a later game. Nobody wants Mario to "reinvent itself", they just want Mario. Sunshine wasn't popular for a reason.

>But FF reinvented itself!
Pretty much every FF until 12 is either a traditional turn-based RPG, or a traditional RPG with an ATB itself. The myth that it "reinvented itself every game" is retarded. And the more drastically different games in the series like 2 and 13 are the most hated.

If you don't like DQ, it's not because it needs to "evolve". It's because you don't like DQ. Just go play something else.

Attached: 1543642832423.png (400x400, 168K)

What exactly are you suggesting with party members being "complacent"? Do you really want "MORRIGAN DISAPPROVES -1" in every game?

you sound like someone with no arguments

ever play a western rpg where your choices actually piss off a party member and they'll bicker with you or eventually leave? Or I dunno, do SOMETHING besides just agree with the protagonist and follow him mindlessly around everywhere

no it isn't dude, I cleared it in a day.

maybe point to a game instead of creating a list of stereotypes you expect people to refute

>You will finish in a few hours
That’s just not true

They literally announced the Switch version way before the game was released in the west. It's your own fault if you didn't know.

Imagine a 100 hour quest with petty, bickering characters. Imagine DQ11 but Sylvando was written by an American. It would be insufferable.

Dragon Quest 11
The Alliance Alive, Dragon Quest VII, Dragon Quest VIII, Bravely Default, Tales of series...Pokemon series, Radiant Historia, etc

>Imagine a 100 hour quest with lifeless cardboard cutouts, that sometimes have a bit of pointless dialogue
Yikes

>lifeless cardboard cutouts, that sometimes have a bit of pointless dialogue
Guessing you are American, seeing as to you being confrontational is the only form of personality.

that's not confrontational, but this is since it assumes all meaningful and dynamic character interaction would be extreme and negative? clearly a low IQ african stumbled here

Not that the switch version would contain exclusive content and the other versions would be left to dry.

>why make a 2D horizontal shoot em up when danmaku, FPS and TPS exist?
You sound like this.

I bet you don't see many 12 year olds then

The art is by the DBZ dude.

>exclusive content
they just mashed the 3DS game into the PS4 game
there's barely anything that's actually new or exclusive

>WTF dude, she looks like a 12 years old.
in jrpgs she's ready to be a "waifu" and a "slut"
JRPGs and anime have created a generation of pedo zoomers and pedo journalists, like that ars technica ginger

I bet everyone that shits on DQ for being "le formulaic" are the same people that think Ocarina of Time is an irrelevant game.

does that make you feel better somehow?

You never played XI then? Because [spoilers]it's a direct prequel to 3. The Luminary is given the title of 'Erdrick' by the Yggdragon[/spoilers]

Cars are big exploding boxes that trap you inside with straps, locks and airbags. I'd rather be able to jump from my bike than be trapped in a car in the event of a crash. If I crash my car and I'm knocked unconscious and a fire starts, I'm pretty much fucked, but on a bike you're more likely going to be flung away (or can consciously fling yourself away) from your bike in a crash and you have your gear to mitigate the damage and protect your head. You're also far less likely to kill someone else if you crash a motorcycle rather than a car.

Motorcycles are no more dangerous than cars, the only problem is if you're in the US where no one can drive properly and you have obese middle aged moms driving 3 ton shitboxes not checking their mirrors or turning their heads before changing lanes.

No? People see that it literally invented the jrpg and think it's supposed to raise the stakes every entry when that's not the point of the series, same with Zelda.

No, retard. It's for Japanese businessmen and their children.

>hating adventure
why do you even play RPGs

How the hell did sunshine reinvent itself?
And how the hell isn't it popular? It's still 3D Mario.

I think he's referencing how 2D Mario still sells a fuck ton more than 3D, and Sunshine is probably the one that sold the least of all the 3D games.

It seems basic because it literally defined the JRPG, it's the base formula for literally every other game.

It just has a charm of it's own that I can't really describe that makes it fantastic. I don't even like the character or monster designs and I want to jab a hot poker through my skull every time that faggot sylvando speaks, but i still played through it twice.

Same reason people like vanilla. Sure it isn't anything special but you always know you're getting vanilla which isn't bad.

Turn based combat is the only way you can design combat featuring party members.

If you try to make real time party based combat it always comes out like a huge mess and your partner AI is fucking retarded, see Ni no Kuni or every Kingdom sharts game.

>but muh soul
But like unironically and for real this time, you are literally complaining about soon to be 35 years old franchise not catering to you lmao, please never be in charge of a franchise.

So what IS puff-puff really?

If you don't get any joy from a game feeling comfy and genuine Dragon Quest isn't for you.

old men's joke

3DS has two additional party members, an ending where you marry Jessica, and other shit.

>Standard
Fuck this, the optimal is between 40 and 50 for the main quest. If you want to go further, you need to put some love to the storytelling. I left Persona 5 after beating Akechi because at that point I couldnt care less, the over exposition was too much. But DQ was more manageable (although it felt too long as well).

>switch version wont look anywhere near this good
I swear they better patch this shit for pc and ps4.

I actually went through the PS2 version and I wish I had played the 3DS one instead, I don't know how well it was balanced towards the lack of random encounters but I'd say being portable + the extra content makes up for the worse graphics (which still look fine).

Sugiyama can't die fast enough
