It was pretty much the turning point that decided TF2's new direction should be "let's try to catch up with the standard format for other online games". Casual and comp matchmaking has become the standard so people thought TF2 would be more accessible and more popular if it had those. Also yeah, compfags thought it might help the comp scene.
Problem is it was implemented so fucking badly, and by the time they kind of cleaned it up, it was too late. That's what happens when your dev team is literally two people.

One thing I want for the Gas Passer is to make it less shit. So make it last 10 seconds on the ground and recharge after 30 seconds. Wet players are wet for 10 seconds, allies who walk through are doused if they're on fire, and the Neon Annihilator will crit enemies who are gassed.
If a player is gassed and takes damage, they essentially get hit with a flare gun. They take 30 damage, burst into flames for 7.5 or 10 seconds, and have a blast radius around them about half of what the Scorch Shot has.
Now it's a real fucking room-clearer. You throw it at a group and the second a stray shotgun pellet hits one of them, they all explode.
I think it should either deal damage the longer you spend inside the gas or burning targets can ignite adjacent teammates.
