All I'm saying is that whether someone got eliminated in first round in both tournaments, or otherwise won two tournaments in a row, it's great fun for everyone, but in no way or form is it an indication of anyone's skill. People shouldn't expect amazing results from players based on their rank or their results in past tournaments, and vice versa. There are no 'favorites' or 'dark horses', there's just a wild ride of luck. Skill in Mahjong is mostly about minimizing your 4th places, and that particular skill has no value even in double elimination format.

I started 6-7 years ago I believe but had 3 years break from "serious" play. Played a few game in tokujou back then. Few is a keyword.
Dunno, from what I see most of the top players in rankings have even higher tsumo rate. I think my discard efficiency is on rather high level, so ryanmen+ is my usual way on winning tsumo. Riichi rate also seems rather high in comparison to other high rank players. I kind of thrown away my old high dama style of play and usually call riichi when I can.

At one point he was at 1500 points and about to get shadow realmed at east 2, then he fights his way back up into second, coming back from 1500 all the way to second with a solid 25700 and I blast him with another ippatsu riichi haneman.

Kudos to him for fighting until bitter end, but it just wasn't his day.

Look at the 立直率 column, 24.7% is hugely above average. It's usually only possible to achieve a rate that high when playing against much weaker opponents.

Unless you're desperate, you don't "go for" hands. You build your hand to be fast, while leaving options open for increasing your value. Knowing how to balance speed and value is tricky even for intermediate players so as a beginner you should prioritise speed and just riichi as soon as possible.

Don't bother trying to use Majsoul AIs for practice, just play this instead and take all the time you need.

Just play defensively. Toward the end of the round or when someone calls riichi you start playing tiles the've already discarded because you know they don't need them. You should also sit on a few "safe" discards such as winds or honors that you see two (preferable three) of in the discard pile which nobody will call on to drop when any other discard would risk getting ron'd on.

There are like 10 yaku that you could use to get your hand into open tenpai with terminals. Sanshoku doujun comes to mind as a way to win from ponned terminals

Actually you only need to remember few key values for 20,25,30 and 40 fu for 1-4 han hands and learn to both divide by 4 and multiply by 1.5.

And fu calculation is done by a single glance - check the ankous and pair, and take base from win method and you are set. Learning all of this takes less than 15 minutes. Same with uma and oka calculation.

It's really not hard at all once you've done it a few times. There are a lot of shortcuts for common hands too, like pinfu always being 20 for tsumo and 30 for ron.

By rarity, I meant that you need to have on your hand 9 our of 12 specific tiles. Due to the fact that over the course of full round 30 tiles pass through your hand, while there is slightly bigger chance to come upon SSD potential hand than Daisangen, the chance is not by any means 9 times bigger.

From my own experience - I got both SSD and Daisangen only once, and this spanned over 1,5k hanchan games.

another way I see it is:
1han is 300 intervals per 10 fu(exception 110fu)
2han is 600 per 10 fu(exception under 20 fu)
3han is 1200 per 10 fu to mangan 70fu
and 4han 1200 per 10 fu to mangan 40fu

it gets a little wierd with the rounding on the dealer side though so probably would still need to double check on that end, but it's a good enough guess

Multiple waits AND tiles,
If you are ryanmen waiting for 5 and 8 pin but there's only 1 not yet visible 5 pin tile left, it's a really bad wait compared to a kanchan single wait on say 2 pin with 4 tiles left even though kanchans are usually worse. On the other hand if that 2 pin is a dora, and none are visible midround, its likely most if not all of them are used up by other players, especially if someone has open pons of pins, and more so if you are reading them as honitsu, chinitsu. Even more likely if its 2 players for some reason. And then since it's a dora, theres even more incentive to not discard it. Then that kanchan wait of 2 pin is nearly just as bad as that 1 tile ryanmen. This is just one situation. It doesn't mean ryanmen 8 tile wait is always the best simple wait either, if opponents rely on suji quite a lot, a kanchan pref with suji traps or shanpon wait can get more of them to deal in.
Also for 3444, the wait is not 3,4,5 man but 2,3,5 man.

Here's a short rules.
There's 2 type of combinations,
3 same or 3 in sequence (123, 345, 678, 789,etc)
You need 4 combinations and one pair to form a hand.
You need Yaku (the special combinations you can see from help page) to declare win, easiest to remember yaku is declare riichi, which means you didn't CHI or PON, and requires one more tile to win.
Learn the rest along the way.

the dora indicator is the top left, the tile that comes after it is the dora that is worth 1 han if you complete a hand with it
dora indicators of pin/sou/man are just done consequently, 8 indicator means 9 is dora, 9 indicator means 1 is dora
indicators of dragons go Green -> Red -> White
indicators of winds go North -> East -> South -> West

if anybody ever calls a kan, a new dora indicator is flipped
if there are two of the same dora indicator, then the dora indicated is worth 2 dora

there is a reveleaed tile on the wall. if you have a tile that is one higher than the tile shown, you get an extra han when winning that round. you however cannot use that 1 han as a winning condition so you still need to make a proper winning hand.

if it shows a 9, it goes back to 1
dragon order: white > green > red
wind order: east > south > west > north

every game has a dead wall of 14 tiles that are never drawn normally - the dora indicator is taken from that wall

That line of tiles in the top-left refers to the dead wall, which is the last 14 tiles of the wall which are effectively out of the game. It has four replacement tiles (which are taken when you declare a kan) and 5 stacks for dora indicators, one of which is flipped up by default. There can only be 4 kans in a game, so there's 4 replacement tiles and 4 additional dora stacks and that makes up 14 tiles.

The rest is explained in , but what's going on when you see the ura dora when someone wins on a riichi is you flip up the tiles underneath all the current dora indicators and those become dora indicators too. So if there have been two kans and you win with riichi, there are three dora indicators each with an ura dora indicator so that has a lot of score potential.

This is why you don't just call kans willy nilly, especially if someone has already called riichi
