That's a bit of a difficult question since headphones will dramatically increase the atmosphere and sound, but you could say that about most horror games. SH1 and 4 don't need it, SH2 and 3 are on PC so you might as well.
Just get comfy and turn the volume way up.

Don't get me wrong, it's an all-time great series, but it's not perfect. Some parts remind me of those artsy horror movies like The Witch, which I just don't find scary. Horror is campy by nature.
