Well for starters you have to acknowledge that Nips aren't religious at all. They see Shinto as folklore and only celebrate it for cultural reasons but not religious reasons.

In this game pair-up is delegated in menus, and you can only assign a limited amount of characters to be pair-up enabled. So you start with 1 slot, you choose who the primary partner is, and you assign him his assistant. This means the primary and assistant can't be swapped. I don't remember if they said the amount of pair-ups you can assign is raised over time or by professor level specifically.
Then in combat, boosts from pair-up seems limited to regular support-based boosts (meaning just might/hit/avoid/crit) and I don't think raw stat backpacks are returning with this method. Could be wrong on that though.
The assist partner is said to be capable of reducing damage taken, though not all damage is blocked apparently, or attack at the end of combat, or heal at the start of the turn if equipped with white magic. We don't know how much of that is based off a RNG like awakening or a gauge llike fates or if it's a mix or whatever else.
All in all it's very limited compared to past games but there must be some upside to it.

The crests are bloodlines, but it seems like they can physically manifest in some ways. Whenever someone uses a crest-based skill, the crest appeals behind them, and the church/ villains seem to have stones with crests carved into them that they use to create those dragons/ beasts. The holy weapons also have crests carved into the hilt, but need to be wielded by crest wielders to work.
