Chrono Trigger's combat was fast as fuck for its genre. There was no transition between the map and battle screens, and field enemies are simply killed by in one hit as long as you are hitting their weakness. Spells and techs had quick animations. Compare it to Chrono Cross where you do have separate battle transitions to and from combat, and then you have to build up your element levels with attacking in order to use your elements. Plus some spells in Chrono Cross have long cinematic, which was endemic of 3d era Square games.

Their games are fine gameplay-wise. They just need better writers for their stories. Looks like Oninaki will be a nice step up from I Am Setsuna and Lost Sphear.

The only games I see get overrated more than Chrono Trigger are Golden Sun and Xenogears. It's really gotten pretty annoying.

SD3 is flawed. The game had multiple bugs that made certain stats and moves unusable, plus combat flow was often stilted due to screen freezes on every cast. The remake is fixing these things and adding a little more depth to the combat due to being in 3D.

Yeah it's super shitty, them re-doing the lvl curve so I get to enjoy the third tier classes is my biggest want for this game (followed closely by the routes being equalized in difficulty because Kevin/Carly might as well be babby mode).

If they made a 3D Chrono Trigger remake, I wouldn't be super excited. Just a bit. I'm so tired of CT in general. Thoroughly played it as a kid, and then seen it around and heard about it everywhere after that.
SD3 is not like that. I love the game, but on top of that you barely ever hear or see things related to it normally. It feels more exciting. I like the aesthetic and music of it more than CT, and have much more nostalgia for it because of that. But it's rough around the edges, unlike CT. A quality remake would be a good thing for it, but we'll see if this one ends up being that or not

A remake likely would lack in the artistic perfection of the original but even as someone who absolutely adores LoM I'm willing to admit that there are plenty of actual gameplay aspects that could be fixed.

>actually explain some amount of what the fuck happens when you're forging/upgrading equipment

Yeah, I think it's pretty good. Yea Forums doesn't like it because they changed the plot and added some optional grindy elements, but it's got some kino scenes and is def among the top 5 best looking games on the GBA. I'd say play the original game first, though.

Old games are too hard, remakes usually add QoL changes and make them easier which is cool if you like old style gameplay focused games without modern cinematic bullshit but doesn't have the autism required to put up with old school difficulty. This is a personal reason I like remakes and I love Atlus for adding easy modes to their remakes. I played the updated releases of Devil Survivor 1&2 and Etrian Odyssey Untold 1&2 on the 3DS only because they had easy modes that the originals didn't, and I'm glad they added in or else I would never had the chance to experience those series. Oh, and also some people think old graphics look like shit and don't want to play it, but I personally don't mind. Ultimately though, remakes are usually made to use brand recognition in an attempt to grab new fans, seeing this from the lens of how would the remake grab oldfags is useless, since nobody gives a fuck about the old fanbase due to how small they usually are.

I love Chrono Trigger but it doesn't need a remake. The original game has aged extremely well and it's plenty accessible even today.
SD3 didn't have an official release westways until the collection dropped with the remake despite being one of the legendary SNES JRPGs. It doesn't really look that good now and it's wracked with bugs. A CT remake likely would've been the end of story too, but this release means we might see the franchise resurrected.

I too loved Live A Live user but its even more niche than SD3. The music in that game was amazing what I would do for a completely remastered soundtrack.

Is it just me or is the combat in Secret of Mana worse than the one in FFA? I've finished FFA a couple of days ago and I really liked how quick and responsive the combat felt but then I started SoA and it just feels sluggish and boring in comparison. I'm legitimately disappointed because I thought that they were going to improve on the base that they established with Adventure, but it feels like they actually took a step back. Does SD3 at least play better?

SD3 is weird. You attack, some characters have multi-hits, but after each attack there's a brief period where their attack posture is lax and they're unable to attack, then they settle back into being able to attack again. It's like Secret's stamina system but you can't attack for the admittedly-shorter duration at all. As you damage enemies, you build up your tech meter, and once it's full you can unleash a much more powerful tech attack with a separate button, instead of having to hold-and-charge.

If you want Secret to play more like FFA, I recommend looking up the Turbo hack. Sure it fucks with the balance, but it basically turns Secret into that same kind of thing, and with the right settings even has the identical "swing while still, stab while moving" setup when using the sword at least.

SoM is easily the slowest of the games, I wouldn't recommend it over either FFA or ToM honestly.

I played the first one, everyone fucking dies, the tree gets destroyed and the MC waifu has to sacrifice herself to become the new three while the MC protects her for the rest of his life alone. And everything is fucked anyway afterwards because she's the last person ever who can turn into the tree.
In the second game it's the same whole deal with the tree getting destroyed, no more people who can become tree and ultimately by getting the world rid of mana by killing the mana beast. So the world is once again fucked because no more mana.

All the endings are happy endings. Hawkeye, Riesz, Angela have the "things will be hard but we'll get through this stuff" good with the latter hitting on a party member if its her route. Kevin and Charlotte get happy if kind of cheesy endings, Duran gets a basic good ending, probably the most boring of the lot.

They get much happier endings, every playable character has a personal quest that you actually resolve and the main plot is a lot more straightforward than the other games.

It's story resolutions are for the most part more happy for the characters, if not outright convenient at points, but In the ending, no matter which final villain path you take, they will destroy the mana tree, and achieve full power, killing the fairy who was with you for most of your journey, and giving a feeling that its all over, then you fight, you gain the upper hand and kill them. The fairy who was serving the mana goddess and the tree then uses her spirit to fulfill the duty of being the next mana tree, so it's not really that bad, as she gets to revive the thing she wanted protect.

I'm not much of a fan of RPGs but the remake caught my attention in the Direct and hearing that they're improving the combat and adding verticality to it while learning about the replay value made me completely interested. The collection was cool but I'm not really hyped for this remake at all, the first one sucked nuts.

Masato Kato alone is not the Dream Team. That group included people like Sakaguchi, Uematsu, Horii, and other more high profile developers. Besides, given how Cross turned out, I think Kato needs to be held by leash to have his games not turn out shitty.

Gacha is shit and you missed one of the better rerolling periods, where they were handing out a 5* at the start. Doesn't help that to even get to rolling, it takes like an hour, and that's for like 1-2 rolls. The good news is that the free 5*s are as good as the gacha ones. The bad news is that it's a grind, since some of them require you to beat challenge bosses, while others haven't come in yet. And you have to get the items to make some characters into 5*s. Of course, that does include 4* that can be upgraded to 5*.

That'd be sad, but from the few bits they've shown so far, it fairly faithful to the original, while improving the sound.

While i would say that secret of Mana has the better enviroment music that excels when its calm, Seiken Densetsu has like 3 times as many songs and is way better when it comes to music that enhances the action.
The boss theme in SoM alone is the defenition of repetitive, no only by itself, but also how often you get to hear it. SD3 has like 5 or so normal boss themes, all of them better than the one i SoM. Both have a great final Boss track though

SoM's soundtrack suffers terribly from using too many sound channels though. It's constantly having instrument samples cut-out from combat sounds taking priority.

If I knew how to get MSU-1 pcms to loop properly and was actually competent at it, i'd totally release a pack to fix that. I already have nearly all of the soundtrack set up besides certain bits, the ending themes and Oracle, and with Turbo's faster MSU loading it basically removes all the stalling for nearly all music changes, but the loops get me.

Most us are going apeshit happy at how good Angela and Riesz look, and lots of people want to fuck Duran now.
