Get boosting just before you reach the half-pipe bit and then gather some distance from the far side of the half-pipe to the shortcut side, hopping at the top of the ramp near the shortcut entrance.

It's funny this guy doesn't even scratch the surface. When you boost makes a huge difference as well as the bonus you get from drifting over boost pads and the numerous other mechanics and quirks in the game to give you an edge over other players if you master them. The reserve system by itself is genius.

I'm more worried about no-fun shortcuts becoming mandatory.
The one in polar pass & oxide station are good examples. They're not particularly fun to take but they cut off so much that you'll be fucking if you don't take them as well.

They're not bad at all, most of the stuff that fucks you over for being in first place will also fuck over anyone between you and the guy who shot it. Meaning that the guy in second & third will also get fucked by the equivalent of a blue shell in mario kart making it so only the guy at the back can close distance rather than the last guy helping everyone to fuck you over cause you're in first place.

I actually think this game's items are more fucked than mario kart.
The shrink equivalent appears way too often and has no cooldown so someone can pick one up right after the last one ended.
You have a chance of getting the star equivalent in any place, even first.
Offensive items can come in triple variants, but defensive only come in singles. You also can't drag items so blocking is harder to do.

Play the game to the point where you feel like you're ready to take on the N. Tropy ghosts in the time trials. Then look up the autistic, advanced game mechanics and practice those. Once you've beaten all of those ghosts, you're pretty good. But then it's time to move on to the Oxide ghosts.

i've been playing the original a lot and i can do it all the time, the missile has to be pretty close but it's completely possible

Yes. It's much easier to drift in straight lines with tiny or dingo. Also there is the super turn mechanic if you need to pull a really sharp turn so there's really no reason to use them.

CTR autist here. For most tracks, the ability to power slide in a straight line is more valuable than the ability to drift tighter.

That being said there still are a few tracks where the turn character is the best choice.

Its sort of the best of both worlds. A lot of people wanted them included, but they might catch fire because trophy girls aren't a thing in racing anymore and journalists would get mad. So they still included them, and made them playable instead.

The TNT and Shield items don't really have a Mario equivalent, and the item upgrading was a neat mechanic. The items in Crash were nowhere near as intrusive as they were in Mario kart as the NPC racers couldn't use some of the more powerful ones. Also the fact there was minimal rubber banding in CTR meaning if you were good, once you got a certain distance ahead of the competition you couldn't be hit by most items.
